Amyloid beta（Aβ）-induced oxidative stress is a major pathologic hallmark of Alzheimer＇s disease. Cyanidin, a natural flavonoid compound, is neuroprotective against oxidative damage-mediated degeneration. However, its molecular mechanism remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of cyanidin pretreatment against Aβ-induced neurotoxicity in PC12 cells, and explored the underlying mechanisms. Cyanidin pretreatment significantly attenuated Aβ-induced cell mortality and morphological changes in PC12 cells. Mechanistically, cyanidin effectively blocked apoptosis induced by Aβ, by restoring the mitochondrial membrane potential via upregulation of Bcl-2 protein expression. Moreover, cyanidin markedly protected PC12 cells from Aβ-induced DNA damage by blocking reactive oxide species and superoxide accumulation. These results provide evidence that cyanidin suppresses Aβ-induced cytotoxicity, by preventing oxidative damage mediated by reactive oxide species, which in turn inhibits mitochondrial apoptosis. Our study demonstrates the therapeutic potential of cyanidin in the prevention of oxidative stress-mediated Aβ neurotoxicity.

The relationships between two-photon absorption (TPA) effect and excited state intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) of p-substituted stilbene-type pyridinium salts have been investigated. Two-photon absorption cross section (δTPA) for all the compounds has been determined by open aperture Z-scanning technique, while two-photon pumped (TPP) up-converted lasing efficiencies (η) and optical limiting behavior have been measured by two-channel energy-meter, pumped by a mode locked Nd: YAG ps laser. Streak camera was used to record two-photon induced fluorescence and the fluorescence lifetimes. The experimental and calculated results have shown that the excited state larger in-tra-molecular charge transfer, in the excited state characterized by the charge density difference between the ground state ( S0) and the first excited state ( S1), has contributed to enhancing TPA cross section and may result in better optical limiting effect. And high TPP up-converted lasing efficiency is related to not only the δTP

The Indian Peninsula is one of the most well-studied regions for Holocene sea-level fluctuations in the world, however, standardized relative sea-level datasets are missing. This study provides an archive of sealevel indicators(n = 162, 20 locations) along the western and the eastern sides of the peninsula, that have been used to develop Relative Sea Level(RSL) plots. Each dated sea-level indicator is recalibrated for its elevation based on tidal and tectonic correction, as well as age with reservoir correction, and have been separated into six zones based on coastal geomorphology and number of datasets. The database spans throughout the Holocene and covers sea-level depth/elevations from-45 m to +5 m from mean sea-level(MSL). Approximately 90 % of the dataset range from 8 ka to the present day. The first transgression is highly variable and identified between 8.5-8 ka BP in Gujarat(Zone 1), ~ 5.5 ka BP in Maharashtra(Zone 2), between 8 and 7 ka BP in Tamil Nadu(Zone 4) and between 8 and 7.5 ka BP in the Bengal coasts(Zone 6). No transgression above present sea-level is observed along Andhra Pradesh(Zone 5)(no data for Kerala-Zone 3).Further, Zones 1, 2, 4 and 6 show a strong uplift component(tectonic), whereas Zone 5 exhibits subsidence during the Holocene(Zone 3-insufficient data). Based on these findings, and given the region's coastal topography and tidal components, Zones 6 and 1 will likely undergo the largest coastal inundation, followed by Zones 5, 4, 2, and 3. These insights are critical in planning future coastal inundation measures across the Indian Peninsula.

Effect of phosphorus on arsenic accumulation in As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata L. and its implication

Pot experiment was conducted to understand the effect of phosphorus on arsenic accumulation in As-hyperaccumulator Chinese brake (Pteris vittata L.). It is shown that arsenic concentrations in the fronds and rhizoids, the arsenic bioaccumulation factor, and the total arsenic in the fronds were not influenced significantly under low levels of phosphorus (≤400 mg/kg) and increased sharply under high levels of phosphorus (>400 mg/ kg). The discovery implies that the efficiency of arsenic removal in phytoremedia-tion using the hyperaccumulating plant can be greatly elevated by the phosphorus addition at high rates. The interaction between the accumulation of phosphorus and that of arsenic in plant was stimulated mutually. The result represents that Chinese brake is a good material for plant physiologist to conduct comparative and mechanism studies on the uptake behaviors of phosphorus and arsenic, and phosphorus is also a potential accelerator for phytoremediation of arsenic-contaminated soils.

Lithium/sulfur （Li/S） cells have great potential to become mainstream secondary batteries due to their ultra-high theoretical specific energy. The major challenge for Li/S cells is the unstable cycling performance caused by the sulfur＇s insulating nature and the high-solubility of the intermediate polysulfide products. Several years of efforts to develop various fancy carbon nanostructures, trying to physically encapsulate the polysulfides, did not yet push the cell＇s cycle life long enough to compete with current Li ion cells. The focus of this review is on the recent progress in chemical bonding strategy for trapping polysulfides through employing functional groups and additives in carbon matrix. Research results on understanding the working mechanism of chemical interaction between polysulfides and functional groups （e.g. 0-, B-, N- and S-） in carbon matrix, metal-based additives, or polymer additives during charge/discharge are discussed.

The quality of sleep may be a reflection of an el- derly individual＇s health state, and sleep pattern is an im- portant measurement. Recognition of sleep pattern by itself is a challenge issue, especially for elderly-care community, due to both privacy concerns and technical limitations. We propose a novel multi-parametric sensing system called sleep pattern recognition system （SPRS）. This system, equipped with a combination of various non-invasive sensors, can mon- itor an elderly user＇s sleep behavior. It accumulates the de- tecting data from a pressure sensor matrix and ultra wide band （UWB） tags. Based on these two types of complemen- tary sensing data, SPRS can assess the user＇s sleep pattern automatically via machine learning algorithms. Compared to existing systems, SPRS operates without disrupting the users＇ sleep. It can be used in normal households with minimal deployment. Results of tests in our real assistive apartment at the Smart Elder-care lab are also presented in this paper.
