Early osmotic adjustment responses in drought-resistant and drought-sensitive oilseed rape

The impact of osmotic stress on growth, physiolo- gy, and metabolism of winter oilseed rape （Brassica napus L.） was investigated by detailed analysis of biomass traits, hormone metabolites and osmolytes in two genetically unrelated drought-tolerant genotypes and two unrelated drought-sensitive genotypes. Seedlings were grown in vitro under controlled conditions and osmotic stress was simulated by applying a gradual treatment with polyethylene glycol （PEG 6ooo）, followed by hypo-osmotic treatment of variants used for metabolite determination. The results provide a basis for the identification of reliable selection criteria for drought resistance in oilseed rape. The in vitro cultivation system established during this study enabled effective discrimination of early osmotic stress responses between drought-resistant and -susceptible oilseed rape genotypes that also show large differences in relative seed yield under drought conditions in the field. Clear physiological and metabolic differences wereobserved between the drought-resistant and drought-sensitive genotypes, suggesting that osmotic adjustment is a key component of drought response in oilseed rape. Unexpected- ly, however, the drought-resistant genotypes did not show typical hormonal adjustment and osmolyte accumulation, suggesting that they possess alternative physiological mech- anisms enabling avoidance of stress symptoms.

Dynamic relaxation processes are fundamental to understand the mechanical and physical properties of metallic glasses. In the current work, mechanical relaxations in a La30Ce30Al15Co25 bulk metallic glass were probed by dynamic mechanical analysis. In contrast to many metallic glasses, La30Ce30Al15Co25 metallic glass shows a pronounced slow β relaxation peak. Physical aging below the glass transition temperature Tgleads to an increase of the apparent activation energy and a decrease of the slow β relaxation magnitude. The correlation between the slow β relaxation and the main α relaxation is discussed.

Genomic selection （GS） and high-throughput phenotyping have recently been captivating the interest of the crop breeding com- munity from both the public and private sectors world-wide. Both approaches promise to revolutionize the prediction of complex traits, including growth, yield and adaptation to stress. Whereas high-throughput phenotyping may help to improve understanding of crop physiology, most powerful techniques for high-throughput field phenotyping are empirical rather than analytical and compa- rable to genomic selection. Despite the fact that the two method- ological approaches represent the extremes of what is understood as the breeding process （phenotype versus genome）, they both consider the targeted traits （e.g. grain yield, growth, phenology, plant adaptation to stress） as a black box instead of dissectingthem as a set of secondary traits （i.e. physiological） putatively related to the target trait. Both GS and high-throughput phenotyping have in common their empirical approach enabling breeders to use genome profile or phenotype without understanding the underlying biology. This short review discusses the main aspects of both approaches and focuses on the case of genomic selection of maize flowering traits and near-infrared spectroscopy （NIRS） and plant spectral reflectance as high-throughput field phenotyping methods for complex traits such as crop growth and yield.

Observations of black hole and neutron star X-ray binaries show that the luminosity of the hard-to-soft state transition is usually higher than that of the soft-to-hard state transition,indicating additional parameters other than mass accretion rate are required to interpret spectral state *** has been found in some individual black hole or neutron star soft X-ray transients that the luminosity corresponding to the hard-to-soft state transition is positively correlated with the peak luminosity of the following soft state. In this work,we report the discovery of the same correlation in the single persistent neutron star low mass X-ray binary（LMXB） 4 U 1636–536 based on data from the All Sky Monitor（ASM） on board RXTE,the Gas Slit Camera（GSC） on board MAXI and the Burst Alert Telescope（bat） on board Swift. We also found such a positive correlation holds in this persistent neutron star LMXB in a luminosity range spanning about a factor of four. Our results indicate that non-stationary accretion also plays an important role in driving X-ray spectral state transitions in persistent accreting systems with small accretion flares,which is much less dramatic compared with the bright outbursts seen in many Galactic LMXB transients.

We have studied X-ray spectral state transitions that can be seen in the long- term monitoring light curves of bright X-ray binaries from the All-Sky Monitor （ASM） onboard the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer （RXTE） and the Burst Alert Telescope （bat） onboard Swift during a period of five years from 2005 to 2010. We have applied a program to automatically identify the hard-to-soft （H-S） spectral state transitions in the bright X-ray binaries monitored by the ASM and the bat. In total, we identified 128 hard-to-soft transitions, of which 59 occurred after 2008. We also determined the transition fluxes and the peak fluxes of the following soft states, updated the measurements of the luminosity corresponding to the H-S transition and the peak luminosity of the following soft state in about 30 bright persistent and transient black hole and neutron star binaries following Yu ＆Yan, and found the luminosity correlation and the luminosity range of spectral transitions in data between 2008-2010 are about the same as those derived from data before 2008. This further strengthens the idea that the luminosity at which the H-S spectral transition occurs in the Galactic X-ray binaries is determined by non-stationary accretion parameters such as the rate-of-change of the mass accretion rate rather than the mass accretion rate itself. The correlation is also found to hold in data of individual sources 4U 1608-52 and 4U 1636-53.

Weathering products of silicate rocks are particularly useful for evaluating the continental chemical weathering on the Earth's surface and its *** mineralogy and major-element geochemistry of surface sediment samples collected in major rivers of Malay Peninsula and North Borneo in the tropical Southeast Asian region are used to study the present chemical weathering process and its controlling factors of tropical *** results indicate that the clay mineral assemblage in Malay Peninsula consists dominantly of kaolinite(average 80%) and minor illite(average 17%),almost without chlorite and smectite,whereas in North Borneo it consists mainly of illite and chlorite,with minor amounts of kaolinite(average 14%) and no *** contents of illite and chlorite in both Northwest and Northeast Borneo are 84% and 87%,***-element geochemical results of both bulk and clay-fraction sediments show intensive chemical weathering degree for both ***,the chemical weathering degree is gradually strengthened from Northeast Borneo,Northwest Borneo,to Malay Peninsula,and it is extremely intensive in Malay *** results indicate that,in the tropical Southeast Asian region exampled by Malay Peninsula and Borneo,climatic condition of tropical warm temperature and East Asian monsoon rainfall is the first-order controlling factor on the chemical weathering,resulting in intensive chemical weathering throughout tropical areas,and tectonic activity and lithology of parent rocks are subordinate factors,which still have an important impact on the weathering products,forming completely different clay mineral assemblages between Malay Peninsula and Borneo.

Obesity is increasing in an alarming rate worldwide, which causes higher risks of some diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Current therapeutic approaches,either pancreatic lipase inhibitors or appetite suppressors, are generally of limited effectiveness. Brown adipose tissue(bat) and beige cells dissipate fatty acids as heat to maintain body temperature, termed non-shivering thermogenesis; the activity and mass of bat and beige cells are negatively correlated with overweight and obesity. The existence of bat and beige cells in human adults provides an effective weight reduction therapy, a process likely to be amenable to pharmacological intervention. Herein, we combed through the physiology of thermogenesis and the role of bat and beige cells in combating with obesity. We summarized the thermogenic regulators identified in the past decades, targeting G proteincoupled receptors, transient receptor potential channels, nuclear receptors and miscellaneous *** in clinical trials were also presented. The main purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge from the biological importance of thermogenesis in energy homeostasis to the representative thermogenic regulators for treating obesity. Thermogenic regulatorsmight have a large potential for further investigations to be developed as lead compounds in fighting obesity.

Impact of anthropogenic drivers on subaqueous topographical change in the Datong to Xuliujing reach of the Yangtze River

Changes of subaqueous topography in shallow offshore water pose safety risks for embankments,navigation,and *** study conducted measurements of subaqueous topography between Datong and Xuliujing in the Yangtze River using a Sea bat 7125 multi-beam echo sounder,and the channel change from 1998 to 2013 was calculated using historical bathymetry *** study revealed several important results:(1)the overall pattern of changes through the studied stretch of the river was erosion–deposition–*** with a volume 700×10~6m^3occurred in the upper reach,deposition of about 204×10~6m^3occurred in the middle reach,and erosion of about 602×10~6m^3occurred in the lower reach.(2)Dunes are the most common microtopographic feature,accounting for 64.3%of the Datong to Xuliujing reach,followed by erosional topography and flat river topography,accounting for 27.6%and 6.6%,respectively.(3)Human activities have a direct impact on the development of the *** instance,the mining of sand formed holes on the surface of dunes with lengths of 20–35 m and depths of 3–5 *** concluded that the overall trend of erosion(net erosion volume of 468×10~6m^3)occurred in the study area mainly because of the decreased sediment discharge following the closure of the Three Gorges ***,other human activities were also impact factors of topographic *** of embankments and channel management reduced channel width,restricted river meandering,and exacerbated the erosion phenomenon.

We report on the biodegradation of pure hydrocarbons and chemotaxis towards these compounds by an isolated chlorophenol degrader,Pseudomonas strain *** biochemical and phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence identified Pseudomonas strain H as having 99.56% similarity with *** *** strain was able to degrade n-hexadecane,1-undecene,1-nonene,1-decene,1-dodecene and *** grew in the presence of 1-octene,while this hydrocarbons is toxic to other hydrocarbons *** strain H was also chemotactic towards n-hexadecane,kerosene,1-undecene and *** results show that this Pseudomonas strain H is an attractive candidate for hydrocarbon-containing wastewater bioremediation in controlled *** the classical standard techniques for detecting chemotaxis are not efficient at low bacterial concentrations,we demonstrate the use of the dynamic speckle laser method,which is simple and inexpensive,to confirm bacterial chemotaxis at low cell concentrations （less than 105 colony-forming unit per millilitre （CFU/mL）） when hydrocarbons are the attractants.
