On the Contribution of Wu Wen-Tsün to Algebraic Topology

The aim of this article is to present the contribution of Wu Wen-Tsün to Algebraic Topology and more precisely to the theory of characteristic classes. Several papers provide complete and welldocumented biography and academic career of Wu Wen-Tsün, in particular, Hudecek, 2014; O'Connor and Robertson, 2006; Wen-Tsün Wu's Academic Career, 2006; Selected works of Wen-Tsun Wu, *** author does not repeat the details provided in these papers concerning the Wu Wen-Tsün's bibliography, we will just mention people involved in the Wu Wen-Tsün's period in *** addition to Wu Wen-Tsün's papers, the Dieudonné's book(Dieudonné, 1960) provides an excellent presentation of main results of Wu Wen-Tsün in Algebraic and Differential Topology. The author will use and abuse of this book(and refer to) when *** the introduction, the author recalls mainly historical facts concerning the contribution of Wu Wen-Tsün to Algebraic Topology. The second section shows speci?cally the contribution of Wu WenTsün to the Stiefel-Whitney classes and introduces the third section, dealing with the(real) Wu *** author provides de?nition, properties as well as further developments and generalizations of the Wu classes. The fourth and ?fth sections are devoted to recent applications: In Cobordism theory and in Mathematical Physics. The author notices that Wu classes have been used as well in other domains,in particular surgery theory(Madsen and Milgram, 1979). The last section concerns the complex Wu classes and shows that the more recent Mather classes coincide with the previously de?ned complex Wu classes, that is a result from Zhou(1994)(see also Liu, 1996).This article is devoted to the contribution of Wu Wen-Tsün to the theory of Characteristic Classes,which coincides with his "French period"(1947–1951). However, speaking of Algebraic Topology, it is worthwhile to mention the important contribution of Wu Wen-Tsün to the Theory of realization of complexes or manifolds in Eucl

Synthesis of a Photolabeling Probe for the Study of Antiviral Mechanism of Ribavirin

Ribavirin has been used in urgency to treat SARS patients recently. In order to study its antiviral mechanism by photolabeling approach, we have synthesized and characterized 5-azido-1-β-D-ribofuranosyl-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxiamide 1 as a photolabeling probe of ribavirin. The azidotriazole nucleoside showed rapid and clean photochemical reaction, suggesting that l is a promising probe to study the antiviral mechanism of ribarivin by photolabeling.

Despite the absence of experimental evidence, weak scale supersymmetry remains one of the best motivated and studied Standard Model extensions. The ATLAS experiment at the LHC searches for signs of supersymmetry in a large variety of signatures involving events with abnormal production of missing transverse momentum, jets, leptons, third generation fermions, gauge bosons or massive long-lived particles. A summary of the most recent results obtained in these searches is presented.

With ultrafast laser systems reaching presently 10 PW peak power or operating at high repetition rates,research towards ensuring the long-term,trouble-free performance of all laser-exposed optical components is *** work is focused on providing insight into the optical material behavior at fluences below the standardized laser-induced damage threshold(LIDT)value by implementing a simultaneous dual analysis of surface emitted particles using a Langmuir probe(LP)and the target current(TC).HfO_(2) and ZrO_(2) thin films deposited on fused silica substrates by pulsed laser deposition at various O_(2) pressures for defect and stoichiometry control were irradiated by Gaussian,ultrashort laser pulses(800 nm,10 Hz,70 fs)in a wide range of *** TC and LP collected signals were in good agreement with the existing theoretical description of laser–matter interaction at an ultrashort time *** approach for an in situ LIDT monitoring system provides measurable signals for below-threshold irradiation conditions that indicate the endurance limit of the optical surfaces in the single-shot energy scanning *** LIDT value extracted from the LP-TC system is in line with the multipulse statistical analysis done with ISO 21254-2:2011(E).The implementation of the LP and TC as on-shot diagnostic tools for optical components will have a significant impact on the reliability of next-generation ultrafast and high-power laser systems.

Biomimetic Autopilot Based on Minimalistic Motion Vision for Navigating along Corridors Comprising U-shaped and S-shaped Turns

A bioinspired autopilot is presented, in which body saccadic and intersaceadic systems are combined. This autopilot en- ables a simulated hovercraft to travel along corridors comprising L-junctions, U-shaped and S-shaped turns, relying on mini- realistic motion vision cues alone without measuring its speed or distance from walls, in much the same way as flies and bees manage their flight in similar situations. The saccadic system responsible for avoiding frontal collisions triggers yawing body saccades with appropriately quantified angles based simply on a few local optic flow measurements, giving the angle of inci- dence with respect to a frontal wall. The simulated robot negotiates stiff bends by triggering body saccades to realign its tra- jectory, thus traveling parallel with the wall along a corridor comprising sharp turns. Direct comparison shows that the per- formance of this new body saccade-based autopilot closely resembles the behavior of a fly using similar body saccade strategy when flying along a corridor with an S-shaped turn, despite the huge differences in terms of the inertia.

Deciphering how T-cell antigen receptor signals are modulated by coinhibitors is a fundamental goal in immunology and of considerable clinical interest because blocking coinhibitory signals via therapeutic antibodies have become a standard cancer immunotherapeutic *** of the attention devoted to T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain-3(TIM3;also known as HAVCR2 or CD366)molecules stems from their expression on exhausted T cells in settings of chronic viral infection and ***,T cells expressing high levels of both PD-1 and TIM3 coinhibitors appear more dysfunctional than those expressing PD-1 *** therapies intending to block both PD-1 and TIM3 are thus actively being explored in the cancer treatment *** interaction with Galectin-9(GAL-9)and carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 1(CEACAM-1),the tyrosines found in the TIM3 cytoplasmic tail are phosphorylated.1 Because these conserved tyrosines do not form a recognizable inhibitory signaling motif,the mechanism by which TIM3 transmits inhibitory signals has not been ***,TIM3 also has costimulatory activity in T cells.2,3 Published biochemical studies attempting to unveil the mode of action of TIM3 have relied on approaches addressing one candidate effector at a time with limited quantitative insight,and most used transformed *** mice expressing an affinity Twin-Strep-tag(OST)at the TIM3-protein C-terminus(TIM3OST mice)(Figs.1a and S1a)and affinity purification coupled with mass spectrometry(AP-MS),we herein defined the composition and dynamics of the signaling protein complex(signalosome)used by TIM3 in primary effector T *** results provide a more complete model of TIM3 signaling and explain its paradoxical coinhibitory and costimulatory functions.

Maximal local loads in animal joints are necessary to design bio-inspired mechanical *** studies presented methods to determine joint reaction forces in humans and ***,many of these methods are invasive,and no work has been published yet about the joint reaction forces in the horse forelimb during ***-invasive methods to measure the kinematics and ground reaction force of a horse forelimb were used in this work.A musculoskeletal model of horse forelimb was built with mechanical methods for the estimation of joint reaction *** entire forelimb was reconstructed by scanning real bones geometry with a 3D optical scanner and modeling all the muscles on a Computer Assisted Design(CAD)*** model dynamics were simulated with OpenSim in order to estimate the joint *** study allows knowing an order of magnitude of the loads at the joints at jumping in order to determine latter the maximal joint contact loading values that will be a key at designing bio-inspired joints for mechanical assemblies.

Burst mode enabled ultrafast laser inscription inside gallium arsenide

Ultrafast laser inscription(ULI)inside semiconductors offers new perspectives for 3D monolithic structures to be fabricated and new functionalities to be added in electronic and photonic ***,important challenges remain because of nonlinear effects such as strong plasma generation that distort the energy delivery at the focal point when exposing these materials to intense infrared *** to now,the successful technological demonstrations have primarily concentrated on silicon(Si).In this paper,we target at another important semiconductor:gallium arsenide(GaAs).With nonlinearities higher than those of Si,3D-machining of GaAs with femtosecond pulses becomes even ***,we show that the difficulty can be circumvented by burst-mode *** generate and apply trains of pulses at terahertz repetition rates for efficient pulse-to-pulse accumulation of laser-induced free carriers in the focal region,while avoiding an overdose of prefocal *** superior performance of burst-mode irradiation is confirmed by a comparative study conducted with infrared luminescence *** results indicate a successful reduction of the plasma density in the prefocal region so that higher pulse energy reaches the focal *** same method is applied to identify optimum irradiation conditions considering particular cases such as asymmetric pulse trains and aberrated *** 64-pulse trains,we successfully manage to cross the writing threshold providing a solution for ULI inside *** application potential is finally illustrated with a stealth dicing demonstration by taking benefit of the burst *** irradiation method opens wide possibilities for 3D structuring inside GaAs by ULI.

Synthesis of Photoactivatable Phospholipidic Probes

We synthesized and characterized photoactivatable phospholipidic probes 1-3. These probes have the perfluorinated aryl azide function at the polar head of phospholipid. They are stable in dark and become highly reactive upon photoirradiation. The preliminary results suggest that they are promising tools to study the topology of membrane proteins and protein-lipid interactions using photolabeling approach.
