Thermal expansion coefficients play an important role in the design and analysis of composite structures. A detailed analysis of thermo-mechanical distortion can be performed on microscopic level of a structure. However, for a design and analysis of large structures, the knowledge of effective material properties is essential. Thus, either a theoretical prediction or a numerical estimation of the effective properties is indispensable. In some simple cases, exact analytical solutions for the effective properties can be derived. Moreover, bounds on the effective values exist. However, in dealing with complex heterogeneous composites, numerical methods are becoming increasingly important and more widely used, because of the limiting applicability of the existing (semi-)analytical approaches. In this study, finite-element methods for the calculation of effective thermal expansion coefficients of composites with arbitrary geometrical inclusion configurations are discussed and applied to a heterogeneous lightning protection coating made from Dexmet® copper foil 3CU7-100FA and HexPly® epoxy resin M21. A short overview of some often used (semi-)analytical formulas for effective thermal expansion coefficients of heterogeneous composites is given in addition.

Bacterial infections and multidrug-resistant bacteria are major health burdens in wound *** antimicrobial agents,e.g.,ε-polylysine(ε-PL),provide a broad spectrum of antibacterial properties and support dermal cell ***,ε-PL was incorporated into polycaprolactone(PCL)/gelatin electrospun scaffolds collected at varying rotation ***,the samples were crosslinked using dopamine hydrochloride to provide highly proliferative dressings with broad antimicrobial *** morphological study showed that the electrospun wound dressings were smooth,continuous,and bead-free,with a mean diameter ranging from 267±7 to 331±8 nm for all random and aligned *** fiber alignment of the electrospun PCL/gelatin scaffolds improved their tensile strength and ***,nanofiber mats are highly hydro-philic,which is crucial for an efficient wound *** samples also demonstrated high antimicrobial properties against common wound bacterial strains,including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA),Staphylococcus aureus(SA),Escherichia coli(EC),Acinetobacter baumannii(AB),and Pseudomonas aeruginosa(PA).Mammalian cell prolifera-tion and morphology assays involving primary human dermal fibroblasts(hDFs)and immortalized keratinocytes(HaCaT)showed excellent biocompatibility of the electrospun mats and remarkably aligned ***,aligned mats showed more cell migration than randomly oriented mats,which is desirable for more efficient wound ***,it can be concluded that aligned PCL/gelatin mats containingε-PL are promising for potential use in wound dressings.

Mooring systems play an important role for semi-submersible rigs that drill in deepwater.A detailed analysis was carried out on the mooring of a semi-submersible rig that conducted a trial well drilling at a deepwater location in the South China Sea in *** rig was 30 years old and had a shallow platform with a designed maximum operating water depth of 457 *** the mooring analysis,a mooring design was given that requires upgrading of the rig’s original mooring *** upgrade included several innovations,such as installing eight larger anchors,*** the original anchors and inserting an additional 600 m of steel wires with the existing *** this was done to enhance the mooring capability of the rig in order for the rig to be held in position to conduct drilling at a water depth of 476 *** overall duration of the drilling was 50 days and the upgraded mooring system proved to be efficient in achieving the goal of keeping the rig stationary while it was drilling the trial well in the South China *** successful campaign demonstrates that an older semi-submersible rig can take on drilling in deep water after careful design and proper upgrading and modification to the original mooring system.
