High Efficiency of Propagation for Sagittaria sagittifolia Using a Temporary Immersion Bioreactor System

Although several studies have reported on the propagation of the Sagittaria sagittifolia to date, none of these methods have efficiently achieved the mass production of these plants. The present study aimed to investigate the propagation and growth of S. sagittifolia using a temporary immersion bioreactor system （TIBS） compared with conventional semi-solid and liquid culture. The effect of different immersion frequencies and immersion times together with supplementation of various plant growth regulators to the Murashige and Skoog （MS） medium was evaluated on shoot proliferation and plant growth. The results showed that the higher immersion frequency （every 6 h） and shorter immersion time （3 min and 10 rain） in medium containing 4 mg/L BA and 0.1 mg/L NAA produced the highest multiplication rate （23）, which are significantly higher than conventional semi-solid （3.6） and liquid （4.5） method, and the best plant growth parameter. While, the lower immersion frequency and longer immersion time （30 rain every 12 h and 60 min every 24 h） induced vitrification and pollution rate in shoot tips 16.6% and 19%, 42% and 37%, respectively. There is distinct decrease in pollution rate （8.3%） in TIBS （10 min every 6 h） compared with the conventional semi-solid and liquid cultures. Medium containing 4 mg/L BA and 0.5 mg/L NAA using 10 min immersion every 6 h showed satisfaction at the rooting stage, with high shoot proliferation rate （21.6）, 100% rooting and 94% plant survival. Therefore, applying TIBS in S. sagittifolia is an efficient method for scaling up the production of plantlets with high quality seedlings.

Insecticide resistance of the field populations of oriental armyworm,Mythimna separata(Walker) in Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces of China

Resistance of five field populations of Mythimna separata（Walker） collected from Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces of China to six different insecticides was evaluated by leaf dip method in the laboratory. The results showed that all populations were relatively sensitive to emamectin benzoate with a resistance ratio（RR） of 0.583–1.583 folds. All populations showed susceptible or low level resistance to chlorantraniliprole and beta-cypermethrin. Compared with a relatively susceptible strain of M. separata, the resistance level of the whole populations ranged from susceptible to moderate to chlorpyrifos and lambda-cyhalothrin, moderate to high to phoxim（RR=19.367–70.100） except for population from Sanyuan County（RR=2.567）. Pair-wise correlation analysis among different insecticides indicated that chlorpyrifos has a significantly positive and significant correlation with emamectin benzoate. Chlorantraniliprole didn＇t have significant correlation with emamectin benzoate, chlorpyrifos and phoxim. Therefore, emamectin benzoate, chlorantraniliprole and beta-cypermethrin are recommended to control oriental armyworm. Meanwhile, to postpone the occurrence and development of insecticide resistance in Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces, alternative and rotational application of insecticides between chlorantraniliprole and emamectin benzoate or chlorpyrifos is necessary.

Simultaneously enhanced thermal conductivity and mechanical performance of carbon nanotube reinforced ZK61 matrix composite

Alloying seriously deteriorates the thermal conductivity of magnesium(Mg)alloys,thus,restricts their applications in the fields of computer,communication,and consumer *** order to improve the thermal conductivity of Mg alloys,adding carbon nanotube(CNT)combined with aging treatment is proposed in this work,*** the D-CNT(a kind of dispersed CNT)reinforced ZK61 matrix composite via powder metallurgy,and conducting aging treatment to the *** indicate the as-aged ZK61/0.6 wt.%D-CNT composite achieved an excellent thermal conductivity of 166 W/(mK),exhibiting 52.3%enhancement in comparison with matrix,as well as tensile yield strength of 321 MPa,ultimate tensile strength of 354 of MPa,and elongation of 14%.The simultaneously enhanced thermal conductivity and mechanical performance are mainly attributed to:(1)the embedded interface of the D-CNT with matrix and(2)the coherent interface of precipitates with *** is expected the current work can provide a clue for devising Mg matrix composites with integrated structural and functional performances,and enlarge the current restricted applications of Mg alloys.

Expressing an (E)-β-farnesene synthase in the chloroplast of tobacco affects the preference of green peach aphid and its parasitoid

(E)-b-Farnesene (EbF) synthase catalyses the production of EbF, which for many aphids is the main or only component of the alarm pheromone causing the repellence of aphids and also functions as a kairomone for aphids’ natural enemies. Many plants possess EbF synthase genes and can release EbF to repel aphids. In order to effectively recruit the plant-derived EbF synthase genes for aphid control, by using chloroplast transit peptide (CTP) of the small subunit of Rubisco (rbcS) from wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), we targeted AabFS1, an EbF synthase gene from sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua L.), to the chloroplast of tobacco to generate CTP t AabFS1 transgenic lines. The CTP t AabFS1 transgenic tobacco plants could emit EbF at a level up to 19.25 ng/day per g fresh tissues, 4–12 fold higher than the AabFS1 transgenic lines without chloroplast targeting. Furthermore, aphid/parasitoid behavioral bio-assays demonstrated that the CTP t AabFS1 transgenic tobacco showed enhanced repellence to green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) and attracted response of its parasitoid Diaeretiella rapae, thus affecting aphid infestation at two trophic levels. These data suggest that the chloroplast is an ideal subcellular compartment for metabolic engineering of plant-derived EbF synthase genes to generate a novel type of transgenic plant emitting an alarm pheromone for aphid control.

Random Parameter Nested Logit Model for Combined Departure Time and Route Choice

A driver’s daily commute involves making three types of decisions:choice of departure time,route choice and mode *** objective of this paper was to investigate potential impacts of implementing variable congestion charging on driver's daily commute ***,this study focused on the departure time and route choice process and investigated Random Parameter Nested Logit model(RPNL)for the combined departure time and route *** R was used for stated choice experiment design,while software BIOGEME was used for model estimation based on the collected *** with the basic Multinomial Logit model(MNL),the estimation results indicated that Random Parameter Nested Logit model(RPNL)improved the model performance,due to considering inter-alternative correlations as well as commuters’*** combined choice models were utilized to present commuters’trade-offs among commute time,monetary cost and schedule *** results showed that under the situation without flexible work patterns,the disutility of late arrival and early departure were high,which resulted in less attractiveness for commuters to switch their departure time and further weaken the performance of implementing congestion ***,in order to enhance the performance of a congestion charging policy for relieving traffic congestion in a community,elastic work patterns as well as other complimentary measures should be introduced in parallel.

Effects of uniconazole with or without micronutrient on the lignin biosynthesis,lodging resistance,and winter wheat production in semiarid regions

Lodging stress results in grain yield and quality reduction in wheat. Uniconazole, a potential plant growth regulator significantly enhances lignin biosynthesis and thus provides mechanical strength to plants in order to cope with lodging stress. A field study was conducted during the 2015–2016 and 2016–2017 growing seasons, to investigate the effects of uniconazole sole application or with micronutrient on the lignin biosynthesis, lodging resistance, and production of winter wheat. In the first experiment, uniconazole at concentrations of 0(CK), 15(US1), 30(US2), and 45(US3) mg L^-1 was applied as sole seed soaking, while in the second experiment with manganese(Mn) at concentration of 0.06 g L^-1 Mn, 0.06 g L^-1 Mn+ 15 mg L^-1 uniconazole(UMS1), 0.06 g L^-1 Mn+30 mg L^-1 uniconazole(UMS2), and 0.06 g L^-1 Mn+45 mg L^-1 uniconazole(UMS3), respectively. Uniconazole sole application or with micronutrient significantly increased the lignin content by improving the lignin-related enzyme activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase, tyrosine ammonialyase, and peroxidase, ameliorating basal internode characteristics, and breaking strength. The spike length, spike diameter, spikes/plant, weight/spike, yield/spike, and grain yield increased and then decreased with uniconazole application at a higher concentration, where their maximum values were recorded with UMS2 and US2 treatments. The lignin accumulation was positively correlated with lignin-related enzyme activities and breaking strength while, negatively correlated with lodging rate. Uniconazole significantly improved the lignin biosynthesis, lodging resistance, and grain yield of winter wheat and the treatments which showed the greatest effects were uniconazole seed soaking with micronutrient at a concentration of 30 mg L^-1 and 0.06 g L^-1 , and uniconazole sole seed soaking at a concentration of 30 mg L^-1 .

The origin of the lattice thermal conductivity enhancement at the ferroelectric phase transition in GeTe

The proximity to structural phase transitions in IV-VI thermoelectric materials is one of the main reasons for their large phonon anharmonicity and intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivityκ.However,theκof GeTe increases at the ferroelectric phase transition near 700 *** first-principles calculations with the temperature dependent effective potential method,we show that this rise inκis the consequence of negative thermal expansion in the rhombohedral phase and increase in the phonon lifetimes in the high-symmetry *** anharmonicity near the phase transition induces non-Lorentzian shapes of the phonon power *** account for these effects,we implement a method of calculatingκbased on the Green-Kubo approach and find that the Boltzmann transport equation underestimatesκnear the phase *** findings elucidate the influence of structural phase transitions onκand provide guidance for design of better thermoelectric materials.

Large aftershocks triggering by Coulomb failure stress following the 2001 MS=8.1 great Kunlun earthquake

The great Kunlun earthquake occurred on Nov. 14, 2001 in Qinghai Province, China. Five large aftershocks with magnitude larger than 5.0 occurred near the Kunlun fault after main shock. Calculations of the change in Coulomb failure stress reveal that 4 of 5 large aftershocks occurred in areas with Dsf >0 (10-2~10-1 MPa) and one aftershock occurred in an area with Dsf =-0.56 MPa. It is concluded that the permanent fault displacement due to the main shock is the main cause of activity of large aftershocks, but not the whole cause.
