Retinitis pigmentosa(RP)is the most recognized inherited retinal disorder involving progressive photoreceptors degeneration which eventually causes ***,the pathogenesis of RP is still unclear,making it difficult to establish satisfying *** have been found to support the theory that vascular dysfunction is associated with the progression of *** coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)is a newly developed technology that enables visualization as well as quantitative assessment of retinal and choroidal vasculature *** in OCTA have opened a window for indepth understanding of RP ***,we propose a hypothesis of RP pathogenesis based on the current OCTA findings in RP,which includes four stages and two important key factors,vascular dysfunction and microglia ***,we discuss the future animal experiments needed and how advanced OCTA technology can help to further verity the *** final goal is to explore potential treatment options with enhanced understanding of RP pathogenesis.

Surgical outcomes in inferior recurrences of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment

AIM:To analyze the anatomical and functional outcomes in the inferior recurrences of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD)depending on the surgical ***:Eighty-one eyes of 81 patients(47 males and 34 females with a mean age of 54.8±14.1y)who demonstrated at least one inferior recurrence of RRD were included in this retrospective *** patients were categorized as having received either circular scleral buckling(SB),pars plana vitrectomy(PPV),a combination of SB and PPV(SB+PPV),PPV with retinotomy(PPV+RT),or PPV+RT and short-term postoperative perfluorocarbon liquid tamponade(PPV+RT+pPFCL).All cases were followed up until successful retinal reattachment or third *** primary outcome measures were the achievement of the surgical goal without recurrence of RRD and bestcorrected visual acuity(BCVA).RESULTS:After the treatment of the first recurrence,the recurrence rate in the PPV+SB group was statistically significantly lower than that of the PPV(P=0.0012),PPV+RT(P=0.028),or PPV+RT+pPFCL(P=0.047)*** was no statistically significant difference between PPV+SB,PPV+RT,and PPV+RT+pPFCL groups in the recurrence rate after treatment of the second recurrence(42 eyes).However,there was a statistically significant(P=0.016)trend towards a decrease of recurrence rate after PPV+RT+*** was no statistically significant improvement of BCVA in either study group(P>0.05)after both first and second recurrence *** mean time follow-up was 109.0±91.0d before the first recurrence and 210.0±186.6d between previous surgery at second ***:Patients with first inferior recurrence of RRD may benefit from SB as an adjunct to *** and short-term pPFCL tamponade in the second recurrence may allow better anatomical outcomes,however,without functional improvement.

Artemisinin, also named qinghaosu, is a family of sesquiterpene trioxane lactone originally derived from the sweet wormwood plant(Artemisia annua), which is a traditional Chinese herb that has been universally used as anti-malarial agents for many years. Evidence has accumulated during the past few years which demonstrated the protective effects of artemisinin and its derivatives(artemisinins) in several other diseases beyond malaria, including cancers, autoimmune disorders, inflammatory diseases, viral and other parasiterelated infections. Recently, this long-considered antimalarial agent has been proved to possess anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic and anti-excitotoxic properties, which make it a potential treatment option for the ocular environment. In this review, we first described the overview of artemisinins, highlighting the activity of artemisinins to other diseases beyond malaria and the mechanisms of these actions. We then emphasized the main points of published results of using artemisinins in targeting ocular disorders, including uveitis, retinoblastoma, retinal neurodegenerative diseases and ocular neovascularization. To conclude, we believe that artemisinins could also be used as a promising therapeutic drug for ocular diseases, especially retinal vascular diseases in the near future.

OBJECTIVE:To investigate the effects of a modified Dahuang Zhechong Pill(MDZP) on the angiogene sis of rhesus choroid-retina endothelial(RF/6A cells and its preliminary ***:A 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-car boxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazol ium(MTS) method was used to assess the effect o a MDZP on RF/6A cell proliferation induced by vas cular endothelial growth factor(VEGF).Transwell in serts were used to assess the effect of the MDZP on RF/6A cell *** was used to asses the effect of the MDZP on the tube formation of RF 6A *** blotting and quantitative re al-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reac tion(RT-PCR) were used to detect the protein and mRNA expression,respectively,of VEGF and matri metalloproteinase-2(MMP-2) in RF/6A cells treatedwith the ***:RF/6A cell proliferation induced by VEGF was inhibited by 0.2 mg/mL *** 0,12.5,25 and 50 mg/mL MDZP,the number of cells that migrated through Transwell membranes was 73.33± 4.51,61.33±4.04,28.67±6.66 and 17.67±4.16,respectively,and the number of tubes formed in Matrigel was 20.33±0.58,13.33±1.53,11.00±1.00 and 1.33±0.58,*** 100 and 200 mg/mL MDZP,the protein and mRNA expression of VEGF and MMP-2 were inhibited in RF/6A *** 400 mg/mL MDZP,the expression of VEGF mRNA and MMP-2 protein were inhibited in RF/6A ***:MDZP inhibits the angiogenesis of RF/6A cells via the suppression of proliferation,migration and tube formation of RF/6A *** of the protein and mRNA expression of VEGF and MMP-2 in RF/6A cells may be an important mechanism.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of Lingqi Huangban granule(LQHB) plus intravitreal ranibizumab in the treatment of macular edema(ME) induced by retinal vein occlusion(RVO).METHODS: A prospective, randomized controlled study was conducted. A total of 60 subjects with RVO induced ME were randomized into control group(CG)(30 eyes) and LQHB group(LQHBG)(30 eyes). CG patients underwent intravitreal ranibizumab(IVR) injections. LQHBG patients were treated with oral LQHB combined with IVR injections. In order to reduce the financial burden of the injections, we used one injection and pro re nata(PRN)regimen for both groups. The best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA), central macular thickness(CMT), and mean number of injections were evaluated at the beginning of treatment and 3, 6, 9 and 12 months afterward. All the subjects were followed up for 1 ***: At the beginning of treatment, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of the general condition of patients(P > 0.05). At 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after treatment, however, the BCVA scores improved and the CMT measurements decreased in all patients(P < 0.05), with the improvement of LQHBG significantly greater than that of CG(P <0.05). The mean numbers of ranibizumab injections were 1.8 ± 0.3 in LQHBG and 2.3 ± 0.6 in CG, respectively(P < 0.05). No adverse events were reported in both ***: LQHB plus intravitreal ranibizumab could be a much more effective and economic treatment for stabilizing and improving vision with fewer intravitreal injections in the treatment of RVO induced ME. This integrative therapy appears to be a promising option for this type of patient.
