Neural stem cell-based in vitro bioassay for the assessment of neurotoxic potential of water samples

Intensive agriculture activities,industrialization and growing numbers of wastewater treatment plants along river banks collectively contribute to the elevated levels of neurotoxic pollutants in natural water reservoirs across *** established an in vitro bioassay based upon neural stem cells isolated from the subventricular zone of the postnatal mouse to evaluate the neurotoxic potential of raw wastewater,treated sewage effluent,groundwater and drinking *** toxic potential of water samples was evaluated employing viability,proliferation,differentiation and migration *** found that raw wastewater could reduce the viability and proliferation of neural stem cells,and decreased the neuronal and astrocyte differentiation,neuronal neurite growth,astrocyte growth and cell *** sewage water also showed inhibitory effects on cell proliferation and *** results indicated that relatively high concentrations of nitrogenous substances,pesticides,mercuric compounds,bisphenol-A,and phthalates,along with some other pollutants in raw wastewater and treated sewage water,might be the reason for the neuroinhibitory effects of these water *** model successfully predicted the neurotoxicity of water samples collected from different sources and also revealed that the incomplete removal of contaminants from wastewater can be problematic for the developing nervous *** presented data also provides strong evidence that more effective treatments should be used to minimize the contamination of water before release into major water bodies which may be considered as water reservoirs for human usage in the future.

We developed novel synthetic routes to heterocyclic ring systems by using transition metal-mediated or -catalyzed reactions. A Lewis acid-promoted addition of the propargyl Grignard reagent 2 to the Schiff base 1 followed by a silvermediated oxidative cyclization of the homopropargylamine 3 provided the aryl-substituted pyrrole 4. Combined with a chemoselective hydrogenation of the pyrrole ring, this method has been applied to the total synthesis of the biologically active fused indolizidine alkaloids ( ± )-harmicine and ( ± )-crispine A[1]. Edge-enriched MoS2 for kinetics-enhanced potassium storage

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) hold great promise as alternatives to lithium ion batteries in post-lithium age, while face challenges of slow reaction kinetics induced by the inherent characteristics of large-size K+. We herein show that creating sufficient exposed edges in MoS2 via constructing ordered mesoporous architecture greatly favors for improved kinetics as well as increased reactive sites for K storage. The engineered MoS2 with edge-enriched planes (EE-MoS2) is featured by three-dimensional bicontinuous frameworks with ordered mesopores of ~ 5.0 nm surrounded by thin wall of ~9.0 nm. Importantly, EE-MoS2 permits exposure of enormous edge planes at pore walls, renders its intrinsic layer spacing more accessible for K^+ and accelerates conversion kinetics, thus realizing enhanced capacity and high rate capability. Impressively, EE-MoS2 displays a high reversible charge capacity of 506 mAh·g^−1 at 0.05 A·g^−1, superior cycling capacities of 321 mAh·g^−1 at 1.0 A·g^−1 after 200 cycles and a capacity of 250 mAh·g^−1 at 2.0 A·g^−1, outperforming edge-deficient MoS2 with nonporous bulk structure. This work enlightens the nanoarchitecture design with abundant edges for improving electrochemical properties and provides a paradigm for exploring high-performance PIBs.

Single-port versus multi-port cholecystectomy for patients with acute cholecystitis: a retrospective comparative analysis

BACKGROUND: Trans-umbilical single-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy for chronic gallbladder disease is becoming increasingly accepted worldwide. But so far, no reports exist about the challenging single-port surgery for acute cholecystitis. The objective of this study was to describe our experience with single-port cholecystectomy in comparison to the conventional laparoscopic technique. METHODS: Between August 2008 and March 2010, 73 patients with symptomatic gallbladder disease and histopathological signs of acute cholecystitis underwent laparoscopic cholecystec- tomy at our institution. Thirty-six patients were operated on with the single-port technique (SP group) and the data were compared with a control group of 37 patients who were treated with the multi-port technique (MP group). RESULTS: The mean age in the SP group was 61.5 (range 21-81) years and in the MP group was 60 (range 21-94) (P=0.712). Gender, ASA status and BMI were not significantly different. The number of white blood cells was different before [SP: 9.2 (range 2.8-78.4); MP: 13.2 (range 4.4-28.6); P=0.001] and after the operation [SP: 7.8 (range 3.5-184.8); MP: 11.1 (range 5-20.8); P=0.002]. Mean operating time was 88 (range 34-174) minutes in the SP group vs 94 (range 39-209) minutes in the MP group (P=0.147). Four patients (5%) required conversion to an open procedure (SP: 1; MP: 3; P=0.320). During the follow- up period of 332 (range 29-570) days in the SP group and 428 (range 111-619) days in the MP group (P=0.044), eleven (15%) patients developed postoperative complications (P=0.745) and two patients in the SP group required reoperation (P=0.154). CONCLUSIONS: Trans-umbilical single-port cholecystectomy for beginning acute cholecystitis is feasible and the complicationrate is comparable with the standard multi-port operation. Lithium-sulfur(Li-S)batteries possess overwhelming energy density of 2654 Wh kg-1,and are considered as the next-generation battery technology for energy demanding *** electrolytes are ubiquitously employed in cells to ensure sufficient redox kinetics and preclude the interference of the electrolyte depletion due to side reactions with the lithium metal *** strategy is capable of enabling long-lasting,high-capacity and excellent-rate battery performances,but it mask the requirements of practical Li-S batteries,where high-sulfur-loading/content and lean electrolyte are prerequisite to realize the energy-dense Li-S *** and highly solvating electrolytes have emerged as effective yet simple approaches to decrease the electrolyte/sulfur ratio through altering sulfur species and exerting new reaction *** solvating electrolytes are characterized by few free solvents to solvate lithium polysulfides,rendering a quasi-solid sulfur conversion and decoupling the reaction mechanisms from electrolyte quantity used in cells;while highly solvating electrolytes adopt highdonicity or high-permittivity solvents and take their advantages of strong solvation ability toward polysulfide intermediates,thereby favoring the polysulfide formation and stabilizing unique radicals,which subsequently accelerate redox *** solvation chemistry approaches have their respective features to allow the operation of cells under electrolyte-starved *** Review discusses their unique features and basic physicochemical properties in the working Li-S batteries,presents remaining technical and scientific issues and provides future directions for the electrolyte chemistry to attain highenergy Li-S batteries.

Sweet plasmonics： Sucrose macrocrystals of metal nanoparticles

The realization of plasmonic structures generally necessitates expensive fabrication techniques, such as electron beam and focused ion beam lithography, allowing for the top-down fabrication of low-dimensional structures. Another approach to make plasmonic structures in a bottom-up fashion is colloidal synthesis, which is convenient for liquid-state applications or very thin solid films where aggregation problems are an important challenge. The architectures prepared using these methods are typically not robust enough for easy handling and convenient integration. Therefore, developing a new plasmonic robust platform having large-scale dimensions without adversely affecting the plasmonic features is in high demand. As a solution, here we present a new plasmonic composite structure consisting of gold nanoparticles （Au NPs） incorporated into sucrose macrocrystals on a large scale, while preserving the plasmonic nature of the Au NPs and providing robustness in handling at the same time. As a proof of concept demonstration, we present the fluorescence enhancement of green CdTe quantum dots （QDs） via plasmonic coupling with these Au NPs in the sucrose crystals. The obtained composite material exhibits centimeter scale dimensions and the resulting quantum efficiency （QE） is enhanced via the interplay between the Au NPs and CdTe QDs by 58% （from 24% to 38%）. Moreover, a shortening in the photoluminescence lifetime from 11.0 to 7.40 ns, which corresponds to a field enhancement factor of 2.4, is observed upon the introduction of Au NPs into the QD incorporated macrocrystals. These results suggest that such ＂sweet＂ plasmonic crystals are promising for large-scale robust platforms to embed plasmonic nanoparticles.

The influence of formation temperature on the solid electrolyte interphase of graphite in lithium ion batteries
