Coupling of 3D Eulerian and Lagrangian Spray Approaches in Industrial Combustion Engine Simulations

The Lagrangian DDM （discrete droplet model） is state-of-the-art for CFD （computational fluid dynamics） simulations of mixture formation and combustion in industrial engines. A commonly known drawback of the DDM approach is the attenuated validity in the dense spray, where the bulk liquid disintegrates into droplets. There the assumption of single droplets surrounded by a homogenous gas field is not reasonable. In this region, the Eulerian-Eulerian multi-phase approach performs better because instead of parcels the spray is represented by the volume fractions of one bulk liquid and several droplet size class phases. A further drawback of the DDM approach is that increasing the spatial resolution of the computational grid leads to a reduced statistical convergence, since the number of spray parcels per computational cell becomes smaller. It is desirable to combine the benefits of both spray approaches in coupled CFD simulations. Therefore, the dense spray region is simulated separately with the Eulerian spray approach on a highly resolved mesh covering only the region close to the nozzle orifice. The entire engine domain with combustion and emission models is simulated with the Eulerian-Lagrangian spray approach for the dilute spray region. The two simulations are coupled through exchange of boundary conditions and model source terms. An on-line coupling interface manages the data transfer between the two simulation clients, i.e., Eulerian spray and engine client. The aim of this work is to extend the coupled spray approach in terms of exchanging combustion related heat and species sources, and consequently creating the link between Eulerian spray and combustion models. The results show mixture formation and combustion in real-case engine simulations, and demonstrate the feasibility of spray model combination in engineering applications.

Real-time temperature prediction of electric machines using machine learning with physically informed features

Accurate estimation of the internal temperatures of electric machines is critical to increasing their power density and reliability since key temperatures,such as magnet temperature,are often difficult to *** work presents a new machine learning based modelling approach,incorporating novel physically informed feature engineering,which achieves best-in-class accuracy and reduced training *** different features introduced are proportional to sources of machine losses and require no prior knowledge of the machine,hence the models are completely data *** using a standard experimental dataset shows that modelling errors can be reduced by up to 82.5%,resulting in the lowest mean squared error recorded in the literature of 2.40 K^(2).Additionally,models can be trained with less training data and have lower sensitivity to data ***-ically,it was possible to train a loss enhanced multilayer perceptron model to a mean squared error<5 K^(2) with 90 h of training data,and an enhanced ordinary least squares model with just 60 h to the same *** inference time of the model can be 1–2 orders of magnitude faster than competing models and requires no time to optimise hyperparameters,compared to weeks or months for other state-of-the-art prediction *** results are highly important for enabling low-cost real-time temperature monitoring of electric machines to improve operational efficiency,safety,reliability,and power density.

A Virtual Prototyping Approach for Development of PMSM on Real‑Time Platforms: A Case Study on Temperature Sensitivity

This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of system interactions in a battery electric vehicle caused by temperature sensitivity of permanent magnet synchronous machines(PMSM).An analytical model of a PMSM considering iron losses and thermal impact is implemented on a field programmable gate array suitable for hardware-in-the-loop *** the presented virtual prototyping approach,different machine characteristics defined by the design are used to parameterize the analytical *** investigated temperature effect is understood as an interacting influence between machine character-istics and control,which are investigated in terms of torque generation,voltage utilization and efficiency under closed-loop condition in a vehicle *** particular,using a surface permanent magnet rotor and an interior permanent magnet rotor,the performance of both machine designs is analyzed by varying temperature-adjusted feedforward control strategies on the basis of a driving cycle from a *** comparison shows that the machine design with surface-mounted mag-nets is associated with higher temperature *** this case,the temperature consideration in the feedforward control provides a14%loss reduction in closed-loop vehicle test *** can be summarized that the electromagnetic torque is less sensitive to a temperature variation with increasing *** presented development approach demonstrates the impact of interactions in electric powertrains without the need of real prototypes.

Verticillium longisporum(vl43)is a soilborne hemibiotrophic fungal pathogen causing stem striping on oilseed rape(OSR)and severe yield *** for resistant varieties is the most promising approach to control this ***,we report the identification of Hva22c as a novel susceptibility factor and its potential for improving OSR ***22c is a member of the Hva22 gene family,originally described for barley(Hordeum vulgare).Several Hva22 members have been located at the endoplasmic ***22c is up-regulated in response to vl43 in both Arabidopsis and *** demonstrate that knock-out of Hva22c in OSR by CRISPR/Cas9 and its homolog in Arabidopsis by T-DNA insertion reduced plants’susceptibility to vl43 infection and impaired the development of disease *** understand the underlying mechanism,we analysed transcriptomic data from infected and non-infected roots of hva22c knock-out and wild type *** identified a homozygous mutant with frame-shifts in all four BnHva22c loci displaying a vastly altered transcriptional landscape at 6 ***,a large set of genes was suppressed under mock conditions including genes related to the endomembrane *** the up-regulated genes we found several defense-related and phytohormone-responsive genes when comparing mutant to the wild *** results demonstrate that Hva22c is functionally required for a fully compatible plant-fungus *** loss of function reduces plant susceptibility,most likely due to endoplasmatic reticulum and Golgi dysfunction accompanied by additionally activated defense *** findings can help improve OSR resistance to *** infection.

Industrialization of a Large Advanced Ultrasonic Flexible Probe for Non-destructive Testing of Austenitic Steel Pieces with Irregular Surface

Because the UT （ultrasonic testing） flexible probe technology may be an appropriate answer to examine components with uneven surface, AREVA has developed an industrial application of the CEA＇s （French Atomic Energy and Alternative Energies） flexible phased arrays sensors. As a ＂first of a kind＂ project, the challenges faced were significant, including developing a phased array smart probe suitable for industrial use on rather simple but large scale geometries, permitting UT propagation within a constraining media structure and then targeting a qualification according to ENIQ （European Network for Inspection Qualification） methodology. A prototype flexible probe, designed for UT validation, and final flexible linear array probes permitting the UT behavior （as, e.g., detection and sizing from diffraction type echoes） to be maintained on wavy coupling surfaces, have been manufactured. These probes include a profilemeter with optical sensors control and a specifically designed coupling circuit （avoiding probe housing tightness issues）. Qualification has been performed using open test blocks, （where known ＂defects＂ exist, for procedure qualification）, and blind test blocks, （where ＂defects＂ are unknown, for qualification of testing personnel）. One open test bloc was customized to represent a ＂real＂ surface condition, with gaps up to 2.5 mm under the regular rigid probes. AREVAI/BGSI in Germany was selected to lead the project, with assistance in development and manufacturing sub-contracted to ＂CEA/list＂ laboratory, and the companies ＂IMASONIC＂ and ＂M2M＂. This paper describes the development of these probes and explains a few features （ENIQ qualification objectives fulfilled, UT data acquired on actual perturbed surface） that made their industrial implementation successful.

Magnesium stress corrosion cracking

The significant positive green environment influence of magnesium alloy usage in transport could be compromised by catastrophic fast fracture caused by stress corrosion cracking(SCC). Transgranular stress corrosion cracking(TGSCC) of AZ91 was evaluated using the linearly increasing stress test(list) and the constant extension rate test(CERT). The TGSCC threshold stress was 55-75 MPa in distilled water and in 5 g/L NaCl. The TGSCC velocity was 7×10-10-5×10-9 m/s. A delayed hydride-cracking(DHC) model for TGSCC was implemented using a finite element script in MATLAB and the model predictions were compared with experiment. A key outcome is that,during steady state TGSCC propagation,a high dynamic hydrogen concentration is expected to build up behind the crack tip. A number of recommendations are given for preventing SCC of Mg alloys in service. One of the most important recommendations might be that the total stress in service(i.e. the stress from the service loading + the fabrication stress + the residual stress) should be below a threshold level,which,in the absence of other data,could be(conservatively) estimated to be about 50% of the tensile yield strength.

Big Data Analysis in Smart Manufacturing: A Review

The technological evolution emerges a unified (Industrial) Internet of Things network, where loosely coupled smart manufacturing devices build smart manufacturing systems and enable comprehensive collaboration possibilities that increase the dynamic and volatility of their ecosystems. On the one hand, this evolution generates a huge field for exploitation, but on the other hand also increases complexity including new challenges and requirements demanding for new approaches in several issues. One challenge is the analysis of such systems that generate huge amounts of (continuously generated) data, potentially containing valuable information useful for several use cases, such as knowledge generation, key performance indicator (KPI) optimization, diagnosis, predication, feedback to design or decision support. This work presents a review of Big Data analysis in smart manufacturing systems. It includes the status quo in research, innovation and development, next challenges, and a comprehensive list of potential use cases and exploitation possibilities.
