A C-type lectin with dual carbohydrate recognition domains functions in innate immune response in Asian corn borer,Ostrinia furnacalis

C-type lectins(CTLs)act as pattern recognition receptors(PRRs)to initiate the innate immune response in insects.A CTL with dual carbohydrate recognition domains(CRDs)(named immulectin-4[IML-4])was selected from the Ostrinia furnacalis transcriptome dataset for functional *** cloned the full-length complementary DNA of *** IML-4(OfIML-4).It encodes a 328-residue protein with a Glu-Pro-Asn(EPN)and Gln-Pro-Asp(QPD)motifs in 2 CRDs,***-4 messenger RNA levels increased significantly upon the bacterial and fungal *** OfIML-4(rIML-4)and its individual CRDs(rCRD1 and rCRD2)exhibited the binding ability to various microorganisms including Escherichia coli,Micrococcus luteus,Pichia pastoris,and Beauveria bassiana,and the cell wall components including lipopolysaccharide from ***,peptidoglycan from *** or Bacillus subtilis,and curdlan from Alcaligenes *** binding further induced the agglutination of ***,***,and *** in the presence of calcium,the phagocytosis of Staphylococcus aureus by the hemocytes,in vitro encapsulation and melanization of nickel-nitrilotriacetic acid beads,and a significant increase in phenoloxidase activity of *** addition,rIML-4 significantly enhanced the phagocytosis,nodulation,and resistance of *** to *** together,our results suggest that OfIML-4 potentially works as a PRR to recognize the invading microorganisms,and functions in the innate immune response in ***.

Contribution to the Knowledge of the Afrotropical Spilomelinae (Lepidoptera, Crambidae): Three New Species and One Taxonomic Update in the Tribes Margaroniini Swinhoe & Cotes, 1889 and Agroterini Acloque, 1897, from Saudi Arabia

Taxonomic and faunistic results on three genera in the tribes Margaroniini Swinhoe & Cotes, 1889 and Agroterini Acloque, 1897—Omiodes Guinée, 1854, Patania Moore, 1888 and Notarcha Meyrick, 1884 are presented, based on material sampled in the Afrotropical part of the Arabian Peninsula, in the south-western province of Jizan, Saudi Arabia. Omiodes undularis sp.n., Patania orbiscularis sp.n. and Patania rhomboidalis sp.n. are newly described. Of Omiodes undularis sp.n., the adults, male genitalia, and tympanal organs are described and figured. The female genitalia are unknown. The Afrotropical and Oriental species of the genus potentially related to the new species by external characters are reviewed. The differential character states distinguishing the new species from the closest related Omiodes indicata (Fabricius, 1775) are listed. The adults and male genitalia of Patania orbiscularis sp.n. are described and figured. The female genitalia are unknown. The species most closely related in the male genitalia is Patania tchadalis (Leraut, 2005). The differential character states are listed. Of Patania rhomboidalis sp.n., the adults, female genitalia, and tympanal organs are described and figured. The new species is externally closely related to Patania tchadalis (Leraut, 2005), Patania harutai (Inoue, 1955), Patania crepuscularia Matsui & Naka, 2023, Patania accipitralis (Walker, 1866) and Patania fraterna (Moore, 1885) externally and in the female genitalia. The external and internal differential character states are listed. A determination key to the newly described Arabian species of the genus Patania Moore, 1888 and their closest relatives is given. The female genitalia of Notarcha viridalis Seizmair, 2021 attributed to the Notarcha quaternalis (Zeller, 1852) species complex, are described for the first time. Biosecurity in a Biodiversity Hotspot: An Updated Checklist of the Thysanoptera Fauna of New Caledonia

The insect order Thysanoptera is used as an indicator of the vulnerability to foreign insect invasions of New Caledonian ecosystems—both the unique natural systems, and the agricultural and horticultural systems on which the economy is dependent. A total of 103 species in 67 genera of Thysanoptera are here listed from New Caledonia, in contrast to the 68 species in 44 genera that were recorded 23 years ago. Of the 103 species, 22 are not known from anywhere else in the world. Thus, up to 80% of these insect species have arrived in New Caledonia from other countries, with a very high proportion likely to have been introduced through modern trading patterns, despite vigorous efforts by quarantine services.

Insecticide susceptibility status and resistance mechanism of Anopheles cracens Sallum and Peyton and Anopheles maculatus Theobald(Family: Culicidae) from knowlesi malaria endemic areas in Peninsular Malaysia

Pediculosis capitis among primary and middle school children in Asadabad,Iran:An epidemiological study

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of head lice in primary and middle school children in Asadabad,***:This study is an analytical descriptive cross-sectional one conducted among primary and middle school children in Asadabad during the academic year of 2013–*** were collected at baseline via questionnaire,checklist and head ***:A total of 600 students were examined(412 girls and 188 boys),and 14 students showed *** the total prevalence rate was 2.3%(3.2% girls and 0.5% boys).The infestation was equal in public and private *** rate of pediculosis was higher in students of primary schools(4.0%) than those in middle schools(0.7%).The age of the students ranged from 6 to 14 *** total number of infected group was 14 with mean age of 8.93 ± 2.43 years,and it was 586 with mean age of 10.98 ± 2.82 years for the uninfected group who were enrolled in the study(P 1).This study showed significant differences between students with curly hair(5.5%) and those with straight hair(1.9%)when compared in terms of head lice infestation(P 0.05).Conclusions:It is necessary to find the risk factors of the infection in order to understand how to control or decrease infection in students,considering the important role of health education in reduction of head lice infections.

Honeybees and bumblebees play a crucial role as essential *** special gut microbiome of social bees is a key factor in determining the overall fitness and health of the *** bees harbor relatively simple microbial communities at the genus level,recent studies have unveiled significant genetic divergence and variations in gene content within each bacterial ***,a comprehensive and refined genomics-based taxonomic database specific to social bee gut microbiomes remains ***,we first provided an overview of the current knowledge on the distribution and function of social bee gut bacteria,as well as the factors that influence the gut population *** then consolidated all available genomes of the gut bacteria of social bees and refined the species-level taxonomy,by constructing a maximum-likelihood core genome phylogeny and calculating genome-wide pairwise average nucleotide *** the basis of the refined species taxonomy,we constructed a curated genomic reference database,named the bee gut microbe genome sequence database(BGM-GDb).To evaluate the species-profiling performance of the curated BGM-GDb,we retrieved a series of bee gut metagenomic data and inferred the species-level composition using metagenomic intra-species diversity analysis system(MIDAS),and then compared the results with those obtained from a prebuilt MIDAS *** found that compared with the default database,the BGM-GDb excelled in aligned read counts and bacterial ***,this high-resolution and precise genomic reference database will facilitate research in understanding the gut community structure of social bees.

Situation analysis of cutaneous leishmaniasis in an endemic area,south of Iran

Objective: To update current situation of the cutaneous leishmaniasis(CL) in Kazerun County,southwest of Iran and to analyze the epidemiological aspects of the disease during 2005-2015,Methods: Data on CL were obtained from the Health Center of Kazerun County,and then were analyzed and mapped using SPSS and Arc GIS 10.3,Results: A total of 700 cases of CL were recorded during the study period with an overall decreasing trend from 2005 to 2015,More than 60% of the patients were inhabitants of rural areas and males were infected more than females,Although there was not a significant difference between gender,job categories,residence and CL infection(P>0.05),age groups were significantly different(P0.05),Most of the acute lesions were found to be present on the hand,leg and face,respectively,The average CL incidence in the study area was calculated as 24.9/100 000 population,A hot spot for the disease was found in southern part of the area(P<0.05),Conclusions: This study revealed that CL is present in Kazerun country,Thus,effective monitoring and sustained suveillance system is crucial in counteracting the disease,and if possible,to eliminate it.

Satyrization and satyrization-resistance in competitive displacements of invasive mosquito species

Competitive displacements or reductions of resident populations of insects, often effected by a related species, may be caused by a variety of mechanisms. Satyrization is a form of mating interference in which males of one species mate with females of another species, significantly decreasing their fitness and not generating hybrids. Satyriza- tion has been established to be the probable cause of competitive displacements of resident mosquitoes by invasive species, especially of Aedes aegypti by Aedes albopictus, two important vectors of dengue and chikungunya viruses. Mathematical models predict that even low levels of asymmetric mating interference are capable of producing competitive displacements or reductions. Couplings of virgin Ae. aegypti females with Ae. albopictus males effectively sterilize these females through the monogamizing actions of male ac- cessory gland products, but the converse interspecific mating does not impact the future reproduction ofAe. albopictus females. Populations ofAe. aegypti exposed to satyrization quickly evolve resistance to interspecific mating, which is believed to ameliorate repro- ductive interference from, and promote co-existence with, Ae. albopictus. The evolution of satyrization resistance among Ae. aegypti in laboratory cages is accompanied by fitness costs, such as reduced fecundity and slower receptivity to conspecific males. Cage exper- iments and field observations indicate that Ae. albopictus males are capable of satyrizing females of other species of the Stegomvia subgenus, potentially leading to competitive displacements, and possible extinctions, especially of endemic species on islands. Exam- ination of other examples of reproductive interference in insects reveals few parallels to the mechanism and outcomes of satyrization by Ae. albopictus. We conclude by posing the hypothesis that satyrization may favor the ecological success of Ae. albopictus, and suggest many lines for future research on this phenomenon.

Objective:To investigate on patients leishmanial infections in Jask ***: Impression smears were prepared from patients in 2008,all,were chequed for leishmanial infection by microscopy and molecular *** *** was extracted using Proteinase K and Phenol/Chloroform/Isoamyl alcohol *** variable segment on minicircles of kineloplasl DIVA was amplified via a Nested-PCR technique using species-specific primers(LIN R4-LIN 17 -Lin 19).Results:A total of 40 smears were prepared from 20 patients,from which,eight samples (40%) were positive for leishman body by microscopic method,while,18 samples(90%) were positive,*** parasite was identified as Leishmania major(L major).Conclusions: Zoonotic or Rural cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic in Jask County whose pathogen is L *** assays using specific primers are very accurate and more sensitive and specific than microscopy which is time consuming and needs master mieroscopists.
