Remote sensing of cyanobacterial blooms in inland waters: present knowledge and future challenges

Timely monitoring, detection and quantification of cyanobacterial blooms are especially important for controlling public health risks and understanding aquatic ecosystem dynamics. Due to the advantages of simultaneous data acquisition over large geographical areas and high temporal coverage, remote sensing strongly facilitates cyanobacterial bloom monitoring in inland waters. We provide a comprehensive review regarding cyanobacterial bloom remote sensing in inland waters including cyanobacterial optical characteristics, operational remote sensing algorithms of chlorophyll, phycocyanin and cyanobacterial bloom areas, and satellite imaging applications. We conclude that there have many significant progresses in the remote sensing algorithm of cyanobacterial pigments over the past 30 years. The band ratio algorithms in the red and near-infrared(NIR) spectral regions have great potential for the remote estimation of chlorophyll a in eutrophic and hypereutrophic inland waters, and the floating algae index(FAI) is the most widely used spectral index for detecting dense cyanobacterial blooms. Landsat, MODIS(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and MERIS(MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer) are the most widely used products for monitoring the spatial and temporal dynamics of cyanobacteria in inland waters due to the appropriate temporal, spatial and spectral resolutions. Future work should primarily focus on the development of universal algorithms, remote retrievals of cyanobacterial blooms in oligotrophic waters, and the algorithm applicability to mapping phycocyanin at a large spatial-temporal scale. The applications of satellite images will greatly improve our understanding of the driving mechanism of cyanobacterial blooms by combining numerical and ecosystem dynamics models.

Impact of mine waters on chemical composition of soil in the Partizansk Coal Basin, Russia

Partizansk Coal Basin,located in the south of the Russian Far Eastern Region,was intensively mined from 1918 until 1998.Although it was mostly explored by underground excavation,the natural landscapes were transformed into anthropogenic ones.After the mines closed,ground subsidence occurred widely,especially in areas near the waste dumps.This caused water tables to rise to the surface and pollute the soil.Analysis of the hydrochemical composition of the mine waters were conducted in 2011-2013,and showed low alkalinity and average level of mineralization.This can be explained by the fact that while going up through soil mass,the mine waters lost their much of their pollutants due to soil buffering All mine water samples contain thermo-tolerant coliform bacteria E.coli that indicates a source of fresh fecal pollution.Our research indicates increased hydrocarbon ion concentrations in mine waters,especially in autumn,that resulted in accumulation of chromium and copper compounds,which can cause soil pollution.A strong relationship between the chemical composition of the mine waters and soil extracts was found within areas of unregulated groundwater discharge on the surface.Significant negative correlation between pH and content of metal compounds including chromium and copper was found at the 'Avangard' mine (r =-0.95);and between alkalinity and chromium content at the 'Glubokaya' mine (r =-0.94).

Existence, morphology and structure of the Yellow Sea Warm Current Branch approaching waters offshore Qingdao, China

In this study, we focused on full-region cruise survey data, near-bottom continuous mooring observations and sea surface wind products from the western South Yellow Sea in winter; after ensuring the data reliability and accuracy, we processed and analyzed the data. Image resolution experiments were carried out to determine the lowest recognition resolutions for all image types, which represent the resolution characteristics of the data. The existence of a warm water tongue originating from the Yellow Sea Warm Current(YSWC) that approached waters offshore Qingdao was confirmed. For the first time, a high salinity water tongue, corresponding to the warm water tongue, was described and found to be more representative of the YSWC branch path. This warm tongue is a sign of the branch originating from the YSWC, which we defined as the Yellow Sea Warm Current Branch approaching waters offshore Qingdao(YSWC-QDB). The pattern of the warm and salty water tongues showed remarkable rear, branching middle, shrinking neck and expanding top regions. These patterns showed a temporal feature of the tongues, and were the result of multi-temporal branches in front of the YSWC main section as well as the YSWC-QDB crossing the southwestward path of the extension of the North Shandong Coastal Current flowing along the southeast coast of the Shandong Peninsula(NSCC-SESE). Analysis using mooring data at a sensitive and representative station also showed the existence of the YSWC-QDB. It is a probabilistic event that manifests as a northwestward flow that decreases gradually from the bottom to the surface in the early cold air transit stage and consistent in the whole water column profile in the later stage. It varies quasi-periodically with weather processes. It also transports some of the YSWC water stored in the entrance area of the Bohai and Yellow seas under winter wind conditions to the western South Yellow Sea as a compensatory current. Atmospheric correction of HJ-1A/B CCD images over Chinese coastal waters using MODIS-Terra aerosol data

This paper demonstrates an atmospheric correction method to process HJ-1A/B CCD images over Chinese coastal waters with the aid of MODIS-Terra aerosol information.Based on the assumption of zero water-leaving radiance at the two near-infrared (NIR)bands or the shortwave infrared(SWIR)bands,the atmospheric aerosol optical depth(AOD)is firstly retrieved from MODIS-Terra with a simple extension of the NIR-SWIR combined atmospheric correction approach embedded in SeaDAS (SeaWiFS data analysis system).Then the"turbid"and"non-turbid"waters are separated by the turbid water index.Maximum probability of AOD at 551 nm band is derived based on the NIR information over"non-turbid"waters and FLAASH model is selected to do the atmospheric correction of the HJ-1A/B CCD imagery using the AOD values of highest probabilities as input.Similarly,according to the histogram of the AOD distribution at 551 nm band,the studied turbid water area is divided into several blocks and HJ-1A/B CCD imagery is corrected with the corresponding AOD values displayed with the highest frequency in each block.This method has been applied to several HJ-1A/B images over Chinese coastal waters and validated by synchronous in-situ data.The results have shown that this method is effective in the atmospheric correction process of HJ-1A/B CCD images for ocean color remote sensing study and application in the coastal waters.

Characterization of Some Bacteria in the waters of Chott of Aïn El-Beida in the South of Algeria

Hypersaline environments, represented by the chotts, the Sebkhas and the saline soils, etc., are a typical example of extreme environment harboring a particularly interesting microbial flara. In this context, the aim of this word is to try to make a characterization of the bacteria in the waters of the chott of Aïn El-Beida in the region of Ouargla (South Algeria). The water samples taken are characterized by a pH between 6.6 and 8.39, the water is neutral to alkaline water, with a temperature between 8˚C to 10˚C, and an electrical conductivity between 2.4 to 6 ds/m reflecting extremely salty water. These characteristics enabled us to select a microflora specific to this environment. The microbiological analsis of these samples revealed fifteen isolated strains, including the following species: Escherichia coli 2, Flavobacterium meningosepticum, Shigella sp, Aeromonas salmonicida, with a bacterial density that varied between 0.27 × 104 to 2.236 × 104, which may explain why the water in this ecosystem is rich in specific important microflora. The results of NaCl tolerance have revealed to us that certain isolated strains tolerate a NaCl concentration up to 35%, these are euryhaline bacteria. With regard to the antagonist test, the strains (S8) have a strong antifungal capacity, which can be explained by the fact that latter has a significant competitive power against Aspergillus carbonarius and Penicillium sp. The microbial exploration of this specific extreme ecosystem proved successful, as we were able to detect significant specific microbial diversity.

A Preliminary Analysis of Trace-Elemental Signatures in Statoliths of Different Spawning Cohorts for Dosidicus gigas off EEZ waters of Chile

We applied solution-based ICP-MS method to quantify the trace-elemental signatures in statoliths of jumbo flying squid, Dosidius gigas, which were collected from the waters off northern and central Chile during the scientific surveys carried out by Chinese squid jigging vessels in 2007 and 2008. The age and spawning date of the squid were back-calculated based on daily increments in statoliths. Eight elemental ratios(Sr/Ca, Ba/Ca, Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca, Na/Ca, Fe/Ca, Cu/Ca and Zn/Ca) were analyzed. It was found that Sr is the second most abundant element next to Ca, followed by Na, Fe, Mg, Zn, Cu, Ba and Mn. There was no significant relationship between element/Ca and sea surface temperature(SST) and sea surface salinity(SSS), although weak negative or positive tendency was found. MANOVA analysis showed that multivariate elemental signatures did not differ among the cohorts spawned in spring, autumn and winter, and no significant difference was found between the northern and central sampling locations. Classification results showed that all individuals of each spawned cohorts were correctly classified. This study demonstrates that the elemental signatures in D. gigas statoliths are potentially a useful tool to improve our understanding of its population structure and habitat environment.

An Effective Method of UV-Oxidation of Dissolved Organic Carbon in Natural waters for Radiocarbon Analysis by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry

Radiocarbon(14C) measurement of dissolved organic carbon(DOC) is a very powerful tool to study the sources, transformation and cycling of carbon in the ocean. The technique, however, remains great challenges for complete and successful oxidation of sufficient DOC with low blanks for high precision carbon isotopic ratio analysis, largely due to the overwhelming proportion of salts and low DOC concentrations in the ocean. In this paper, we report an effective UV-Oxidation method for oxidizing DOC in natural waters for radiocarbon analysis by accelerator mass spectrometry(AMS). The UV-oxidation system and method show 95%± 4% oxidation efficiency and high reproducibility for DOC in both river and seawater samples. The blanks associated with the method was also low(about 3 μg C) that is critical for 14 C analysis. As a great advantage of the method, multiple water samples can be oxidized at the same time so it reduces the sample processing time substantially compared with other UV-oxidation method currently being used in other laboratories. We have used the system and method for 14 C studies of DOC in rivers, estuaries, and oceanic environments and have received promise results.

Hard Foulers Induced Crevice Corrosion of HSLA Steel in the Coastal waters of the Gulf of Mannar (Bay of Bengal), India

In the present study an attempt has been made to investigate the relationship between the variations in the fouling assemblage and corrosion behaviour of HSLA steel at three coastal locations in the Gulf of Mannar, India, over a period of 24 months. Oyster fouling was dominant in the Tuticorin open sea, while barnacles were the major foulants in the Tuticorin harbour and Mandapam. The fouling load in the Tuticorin waters was higher when compared to the Mandapam waters. The corrosion rates decreased progressively with the immersion time at all three test locations. In the Tuticorin open sea, the corrosion rates were higher when compared to the other two locations throughout the study period. The surface of the coupons was characterized by crevices beneath the hard foulers in the Tuticorin harbour and Mandapam, whereas in the Tuticorin open sea, the coupons experienced crevices of a tunneling nature. The percentage of the loss of the tensile strength increased with time at all the test locations.

REPRODUCTION ECOLOGY OF FISHES IN JIAOZHOU BAY waters

Observations on gonad development of 84 species of marine fishes in Jiaozhou Bay waters showed the breeding periods of more than 50 of these species are mostly from April to August, with peaks between May to June. A great many of the species spawn in the warm season, only a few species in the cold season. The number of spawning species increases with the rise and decreases with the fall in water temperature. The absolute fecundity of 50 teleost species, which usually increases with body length and weight, was estimated to range from about 300 to 9,000,000 eggs. The reproductive patterns of fishes in Jiaozhou Bay waters are discussed.
