Free PSA performs better than total PSA in predicting prostate volume in Chinese men with PSA levels of 2.5–9.9 ng ml−1

This study investigated whether free prostate-specific antigen(fPSA)performs better than total PSA(tPSA)in predicting prostate volume(PV)in Chinese men with different PSA levels.A total of 5463 men with PSA levels of<10 ng ml^(−1) and without prostate cancer diagnosis were included in this study.Patients were classified into four groups:PSA<2.5 ng ml^(−1),2.5–3.9 ng ml^(−1),4.0–9.9 ng ml^(−1),and 2.5–9.9 ng ml^(−1).Pearson/Spearman's correlation coefficient(r)and receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves were used to evaluate the ability of tPSA and fPSA to predict PV.The correlation coefficient between tPSA and PV in the PSA<2.5 ng ml^(−1) cohort(r=0.422;P<0.001)was markedly higher than those of the cohorts with PSA levels of 2.5–3.9 ng ml^(−1),4.0–9.9 ng ml^(−1),and 2.5–9.9 ng ml^(−1)(r=0.114,0.167,and 0.264,respectively;all P≤0.001),while fPSA levels did not differ significantly among different PSA groups.Area under ROC curve(AUC)analyses revealed that the performance of fPSA in predicting PV≥40 ml(AUC:0.694,0.714,and 0.727)was better than that of tPSA(AUC=0.545,0.561,and 0.611)in men with PSA levels of 2.5–3.9 ng ml^(−1),4.0–9.9 ng ml^(−1),and 2.5–9.9 ng ml^(−1),respectively,but not at PSA levels of<2.5 ng ml^(−1)(AUC:0.713 vs 0.720).These findings suggest that the relationship between tPSA and PV may vary with PSA level and that fPSA is more powerful at predicting PV only in the"gray zone"(PSA levels of 2.5–9.9 ng ml^(−1)),but its performance was similar to that of tPSA at PSA levels of<2.5 ng ml^(−1).

Predicting the upper stem diameters and volume of a tropical dominant tree species

Predicting upper stem diameters and individual tree volumes is important for product quantification and can provide important information for the sustainable management of forests of important commercial tree species(Shorea robusta)in Nepal.The aim of this study was to develop a taper equation for S.robusta.Fifty-four trees were selected and felled in the southern low land of Nepal.A mixed effect modelling approach was used to evaluate 17 different taper functions.‘Leave-one-out cross-validation'was used to validate the fitted taper functions.The variable exponent taper function best fitted our data and described more than 99%of the variation in upper stem diameters.Results also showed significant effects of stand density on tree taper.Individual tree volume prediction using the local volume model developed in this study was more accurate compared to the volume predicted through the taper function and existing volume model.The taper function developed in this study provides the benefit of predicting upper stem diameter and can be used for predicting volume to any merchantable height of individual trees.It will have implications in estimates of volume,biomass,and carbon and thus may be a potential supporting tool in carbon trade and revenue generation.

The utility of point-of-care ultrasound in the assessment of volume status in acute and critically ill patients

BACKGROUND:volume resuscitation has only been demonstrated to be effective in approximately fifty percent of patients.The remaining patients do not respond to volume resuscitation and may even develop adverse outcomes(such as acute pulmonary edema necessitating endotracheal intubation).We believe that point-of-care ultrasound is an excellent modality by which to adequately predict which patients may benefi t from volume resuscitation.DATA RESOURCES:We performed a search using PubMed,Scopus,and MEDLINE.The following search terms were used:fluid responsiveness,ultrasound,non-invasive,hemodynamic,fluid challenge,and passive leg raise.Preference was given to clinical trials and review articles that were most relevant to the topic of assessing a patient’s cardiovascular ability to respond to intravenous fl uid administration using ultrasound.RESULTS:Point-of-care ultrasound can be easily employed to measure the diameter and collapsibility of various large vessels including the inferior vena cava,common carotid artery,subclavian vein,internal jugular vein,and femoral vein.Such parameters are closely related to dynamic measures of fluid responsiveness and can be used by providers to help guide fluid resuscitation in critically ill patients.CONCLUSION:Ultrasound in combination with passive leg raise is a non-invasive,costand time-effective modality that can be employed to assess volume status and response to fluid resuscitation.Traditionally sonographic studies have focused on the evaluation of large veins such as the inferior vena cava,and internal jugular vein.A number of recently published studies also demonstrate the usefulness of evaluating large arteries to predict volume status.

Using X-ray computed tomography and micro-Raman spectrometry to measure individual particle surface area, volume, and morphology towards investigating atmospheric heterogeneous reactions

Heterogeneous reactions on the aerosol particle surface in the atmosphere play important roles in air pollution, climate change, and global biogeochemical cycles. However, the reported uptake coefficients of heterogeneous reactions usually have large variations and may not be relevant to real atmospheric conditions. One of the major reasons for this is the use of bulk samples in laboratory experiments, while particles in the atmosphere are suspended individually. A number of technologies have been developed recently to study heterogeneous reactions on the surfaces of individual particles. Precise measurements on the reactive surface area, volume, and morphology of individual particles are necessary for calculating the uptake coefficient, quantifying reactants and products, and understanding the reaction mechanism better. In this study, for the first time we used synchrotron radiation X-ray computed tomography（XCT） and micro-Raman spectrometry to measure individual CaCO_3 particle morphology, with sizes ranging from 3.5–6.5 μm. Particle surface area and volume were calculated using a reconstruction method based on software threedimensional（3-D） rendering. The XCT was first validated with high-resolution fieldemission scanning electron microscopy（FE-SEM） to acquire accurate CaCO_3 particle surface area and volume estimates. Our results showed an average difference of only 6.1% in surface area and 3.2% in volume measured either by micro-Raman spectrometry or X-ray tomography. X-ray tomography and FE-SEM can provide more morphological details of individual Ca CO3 particles than micro-Raman spectrometry. This study demonstrated that X-ray computed tomography and micro-Raman spectrometry can precisely measure the surface area, volume, and morphology of an individual particle.

Assessing gray matter volume in patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder

Idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder(iRBD) is often a precursor to neurodegenerative disease. However, voxel-based morphological studies evaluating structural abnormalities in the brains of iRBD patients are relatively rare. This study aimed to explore cerebral structural alterations using magnetic resonance imaging and to determine their association with clinical parameters in iRBD patients. Brain structural T1-weighted MRI scans were acquired from 19 polysomnogram-confirmed iRBD patients(male:female 16:3; mean age 66.6 ± 7.0 years) and 20 age-matched healthy controls(male:female 5:15; mean age 63.7 ± 5.9 years). Gray matter volume(GMV) data were analyzed based on Statistical Parametric Mapping 8, using a voxel-based morphometry method and two-sample t-test and multiple regression analysis. Compared with controls, iRBD patients had increased GMV in the middle temporal gyrus and cerebellar posterior lobe, but decreased GMV in the Rolandic operculum, postcentral gyrus, insular lobe, cingulate gyrus, precuneus, rectus gyrus, and superior frontal gyrus. iRBD duration was positively correlated with GMV in the precuneus, cuneus, superior parietal gyrus, postcentral gyrus, posterior cingulate gyrus, hippocampus, lingual gyrus, middle occipital gyrus, middle temporal gyrus, and cerebellum posterior lobe. Furthermore, phasic chin electromyographic activity was positively correlated with GMV in the hippocampus, precuneus, fusiform gyrus, precentral gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, cuneus, inferior parietal lobule, angular gyrus, superior parietal gyrus, paracentral lobule, and cerebellar posterior lobe. There were no significant negative correlations of brain GMV with disease duration or electromyographic activity in iRBD patients. These findings expand the spectrum of known gray matter modifications in iRBD patients and provide evidence of a correlation between brain dysfunction and clinical manifestations in such patients. We evaluated whether the prostate-specific antigen (PSA)mass or free PSA (fPSA)mass (i.e.,absolute amount of total circulating PSA or fPSA protein,respectively),versus serum PSA or fPSA concentration,improves the accuracy of predicting the total prostate volume (TPV)in relation to obesity.Among men whose multicore (≥12)transrectal prostate biopsy was negative,586 who had a PSA of volume.At each TPV cut-off point (30 ml,40 ml,and 50 ml),the areas under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUCs)of each variable were compared in obesity-based subgroups.AUCs of fPSA and fPSA mass for predicting TPV were significantly larger than those for PSA and PSA mass by 8.7%-12.1%at all cut-off points. Subgroup analyses based on obesity showed that,although PSA mass and fPSA mass enhanced accuracy by 4%(P =0.031)and 1.8%(P =0.003),respectively,for determining TPVs of ≥30 ml and ≥50 ml in obese and overweight men,they did not improve the accuracy in most other combinations of the degrees of obesity with TPV cut-off points.Thus,compared with serum PSA or fPSA,the absolute amount of PSA or fPSA protein mass improved the accuracy of predicting TPV in obese men very minimally and only for certain TPV cut-off points.Hence,these indicators may not provide clinically meaningful improvement in predicting TPV in obese men.

Methods used for evaluation of volume retention rate in autologous fat grafting for breast augmentation: a systematic review

Background:Autologous fat grafting has gained popularity in breast augmentation.Various methods can be used to estimate the volume retention rate.This systematic review aimed to establish whether the type of method used for measuring breast volume is a factor that influences the reported volume retention rate.Methods:Studies were identified using the electronic databases PubMed,Embase,Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials,and Web of Science from inception of the database up to February 2019.Articles describing autologous fat grafting for breast augmentation were selected based on pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria.The characteristics of the included studies were summarized,and the reported volume retention rate from the studies was compared.A quality assessment of all included articles was performed using the methodological index for non-randomized studies criteria.Results:A total of 618 articles were identified,of which 12 studies,with a total of 1337 cases,were eligible.The retention rate of injected adipose tissue varied when the method of fat grafting and volume analysis used were both the same,as well as when the method of fat grafting was the same but the method of volumetric evaluation used was different.Conclusions:Currently,the tools available for estimating the volume retention rate come with limitations.In order to objectively evaluate the percentage of graft retention,a standard protocol that applies to the different methods should be established in the future.

Long-term indoor-air limit for formaldehyde stipulated by the European Commission is 1 μg/m3,while the World Health Organization has set a threshold of 100 μg/m3 that should not be exceeded for more than 30 min. To date,however,only a few analytical techniques have been developed that can be used to detect formaldehyde at these very restrictive limits. Thus,there is a need to develop for comprehensive methods for analyzing airborne formaldehyde and other carbonyl pollutants in the ambient environment. The aim of this study is to develop a highly sensitive online automated preconcentration gas chromatographic method using large-volume injection with a programmed temperature vaporization injector for the analysis of airborne formaldehyde and ten other carbonyl compounds. The influence of several parameters,such as the maximum volume injected,programmed temperature vaporization transfer time and temperature,carrier gas flow rate,and type of packing material was investigated. After optimization,highly satisfactory results in terms of the absolute and methodological detection limits were achieved,i. e. as low as the μg/m3 level for all the carbonyl pollutants studied. A commercially available sampler,originally designed for active sampling,was evaluated as a passive sampling device;this optimized technique was applied to monitor the concentrations of carbonyl pollutants in the indoor air of ten public buildings in Florence. The strength of this methodology lies both in the low detection limits reached in the simultaneous analysis of a wide group of 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine derivatives,and the potential adaptability of this method to other gas chromatographic applications to achieve lower sensitivity.

Mechanism of expanding swept volume by nano-sized oil-displacement agent

The effect of expanding swept volume by iNanoW1.0 nanoparticles in ultra-low permeability core was studied by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance(LF-NMR)technology,and the mechanism of expanding swept volume was explained by oxygen spectrum nuclear magnetic resonance(17O-NMR)experiments and capillarity analysis.The results of the LF-NMR experiment show that the nano-sized oil-displacement agent iNanoW1.0 could increase the swept volume by 10%-20%on the basis of conventional water flooding,making water molecules get into the low permeable region with small pores that conventional water flooding could not reach.17O-NMR technique and capillary analysis proved that iNanoW1.0 nanoparticles could weaken the association of hydrogen bonds between water molecules,effectively change the structure of water molecular clusters,and thus increasing the swept volume in the low permeable region.The ability of weakening association of hydrogen bonds between water molecules of iNanoW1.0 nanoparticles increases with its mass fraction and tends to be stable after the mass fraction of 0.1%.
