Dietary cooking oils and cardiometabolic measurements in an elderly Chinese population

OBJECTIVE To investigate three features of dietary cooking oil intake,namely,the consumption,cooking style,and composition of fatty acids in relation to several cardiometabolic measurements in an elderly Chinese population.METHODS The elderly(≥65 years)participants for this study were recruited from two community health centers in the urban area of Shanghai.A questionnaire was administered to collect information on dietary oil consumption(low,medium and high)and cooking styles(fry or stir-fry vs.others)and the composition of fatty acids(poly-unsaturated vs.mono-unsaturated).The cardiometabolic measurements included anthropometry,blood pressure,fasting plasma glucose and serum lipids.RESULTS The 1186 study participants had a mean age of 70.9±5.4 years.The mean dietary oil consumption was 35.0 g/d,being low(unsaturated fatty acids was 30.4%and 27.4%,respectively.Both before and after adjustment for sex,age,current smoking and alcohol intake,dietary oil consumption was significantly(P≤0.02)and positively associated with the prevalence of treated hypertension and fasting plasma glucose concentration.With similar adjustments as above and additional adjustment for dietary oil consumption,the fry or stir-fry cooking style was significantly(P≤0.048)and positively associated with body mass index,but inversely with systolic and diastolic blood pressure and serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol,and the dietary intake of oils rich in mono-unsaturated fat acids was significantly(P≤0.02)and positively associated with diastolic blood pressure,serum triglycerides,total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol,and the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia.CONCLUSIONS This study showed that both the consumption and composition of fatty acids of the dietary oils mattered with regard to several cardiometabolic measurements in an elderly

Chemo-selective control of Ritter-type reaction by coordinatively unsaturated inorganic salt hydrates

The Ritter-type reaction, without relying on a pre-installed functional group, is a highly efficient tool forthe construction of amides. However, the intrinsic chemo-selectivity that determines the generation ofamides or byproducts limits the efficiency and yield of the reaction. From 68 different types of hydrates,we found that a coordinatively unsaturated inorganic salt hydrate, MgSO_(4)·2H_(2)O, controlled chemoselectivity and eliminated the shortcomings of other synthesis approaches. To rationalize the differencesin selectivity of inorganic salt hydrates, we analyzed their corresponding water content, alkalinity, anions,and cations. MgSO_(4)·2H_(2)O was used with diverse scaffolds and C–H oxygenations, which demonstratedits generality in synthetic utility. Because it is readily available and it significantly improves yield, we expectthat MgSO_(4)·2H_(2)O will have broad application for Ritter-type reactions.

An unprecedented Ag(I)-catalyzed[3+3]-annulation of alkynyl alcohols(5-hexyn-1-ols)andα,β-unsaturated ketones is reported to construct simple to complex chromanes.This transformation begins with hydroalkoxylation of alkynol through C-C triple bond activation to give cyclic-enol ether,followed by intermolecular 1,4-addition and intramolecular 1,2-addition of enol ethers onto the enone and oxidative aromatization or Grob-type elimination steps.

The reaction of 2-pyridylacetates andα,β-unsaturated pyrazolamides with DBU as the catalyst has been developed.A range of unexplored multisubstituted 2,3-dihydro-4H-quinolizin-4-ones are obtained with satisfactory yields(up to 94%)and excellent diastereoselectivities(all cases>20:1 dr)via a dearomative[3+3]annulation process.This practical method also features transition metal free,mild reaction conditions,wide functional group tolerance,easy scale-up synthesis,and versatile further derivatization.

Regioselective umpolung addition of dicyanobenzene to α,β-unsaturated alkenes enabled by electrochemical reduction

An umpolung addition of dicyanobenzene toα,β-unsaturated alkenes has been developed using an elec-troreductive strategy.This electrochemical protocol is well compatible with a broad range of convention-ally challenging substrates,includingα,β-unsaturated esters,nitriles and trisubstituted enones.Moreover,good to excellent regioselectivities are observed in the reaction of cinnamates with dicyanobenzene.Synthetic utility of this electrochemical approach is further demonstrated by direct late-stage functionali-zation of(S)-verbenone and 16-dehydropregnenolone acetate.

Different patterns of association between white matter microstructure and plasma unsaturated fatty acids in those with high risk for psychosis and healthy participants

Background Disrupted white matter(WM)microstructure has been commonly identified in youth at clinical high risk(CHR)for psychosis.Several lines of evidence suggest that fatty acids,especially unsaturated fatty acids(UFAs),might play a crucial role in the WM pathology of early onset psychosis.However,evidence linking UFA and WM microstructure in CHR is quite sparse.Aims We investigated the relationship between the plasma UFA level and WM microstructure in CHR participants and healthy controls(HC).Methods Plasma fatty acids were assessed and diffusion tensor imaging(DTI)data were performed with tract-based spatial statistics(TBSS)analysis for 66 individuals at CHR for psychosis and 70 HC.Results Both the global and regional diffusion measures showed significant between-group differences,with decreased fractional anisotropy(FA)but increased mean diffusivity(MD)and radial diffusivity(RD)found in the CHR group compared with the HC group.On top of that,we found that in the HC group,plasma arachidic acid showed obvious trend-level associations with higher global FA,lower global MD and lower global RD,which regionally spread over the corpus callosum,right anterior and superior corona radiata,bilateral anterior and posterior limb of the internal capsule,and bilateral superior longitudinal fasciculus.However,there were no associations between global WM measures and any UFA in the CHR group.Conversely,we even found negative associations between arachidic acid levels and regional FA values in the right superior longitudinal fasciculus and right retrolenticular part of the internal capsule in the CHR group.Conclusions Compared with the HC group,CHR subjects exhibited a different pattern of association between WM microstructure and plasma UFA,with a neuroprotective effect found in the HC group but not in the CHR group.Such discrepancy could be due to the excessively upregulated UFAs accumulated in the plasma of the CHR group,highlighting the role of balanced plasma-membrane fatty acids homeostasis in WM development.

Reaction rate constants and products of 1-octen-3-one,3-octen-2-one and 4-hexen-3-one with ozone were studied in a 100-L fluorinated ethylene propylene(FEP) Teflon film bag using absolute rate method at 298 ± 1 K and atmospheric pressure.The rate constants were(1.09 ± 0.12) × 10-17,(3.48 ± 0.36) × 10-17 and(5.70±0.60) × 10-17 cm3/(molecule·sec),respectively.According to the obtained rate constants,the effects of carbonyl were discussed.The carbonyl group in β position has a net withdrawing effect with respect to an olefinic bond,then causing the decline of rate constants.The quantum chemical calculation was used to explain the results of rate constants.The products of ozonolysis were mainly aldehydes,which have significant influence on the formation of SOA,and hence play an important role in the atmosphere.In this work,we detected the main products of reaction and proposed the reaction mechanism by combining the results of quantum chemical calculations.Atmospheric lifetime for three unsaturated ketones reacted with ozone was 36.4,11.4 and 6.9 hr for 1-octen-3-one,3-octen-2-one and 4-hexen-3-one,respectively.

In the present study,two new acetylene conjugate compounds,dibutyl(2Z,6Z)-octa-2,6-dien-4-yne dioate(1),and dibutyl(2E,6E)-octa-2,6-dien-4-yne dioate(2),were isolated from the dry stem leaves of Viscum album,along with nine known compounds(3–11).Their structures were confirmed on the basis of spectroscopic data.Compounds 1 and 8 showed antioxidant activity against xanthine oxidase(XOD)and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)hydroxyl(DPPH),with the IC_(50) of 1.22 and 1.33μmol·L^(–1),and the SC_(50 )of 4.34 and 8.22μmol·L^(–1),respectively.

Radical cascade reactions of unsaturated C–C bonds involving migration

During the past few years, with the rapid development of mild methods for the generation of radical species, great progress in radical cascade reactions of unsaturated C–C bonds has been made. Many radical cascade reactions involve functional groups migration, which leads structurally much more diverse, complex and valuable compounds not easily obtained through other methods. In this review, the recent achievements in unsaturated C–C bonds radical cascade reactions involving migration are summarized.
