Analysis of the subtitle translation of The Shawshank Redemption from the Perspective of the Skopos Theory

translation is an important communication skill between different languages.In modern society,audiovisual products are distributed to worldwide areas as a popular means of mass media.As the globalization of economy and culture is advancing in the new century,audiovisual subtitle translation plays an increasingly important part.Good subtitles can enhance the audience’s experience of appreciating foreign films and make cultural communication more effective.This thesis conducts a brief survey on the strategies for film subtitle translation using the case study of the famous film The Shawshank Redemption.In this paper,based on Skopos theory,the author made a comprehensive analysis of subtitling activities and pointed out that subtitling,as a specialized area of translation,is not only guided by translation studies but also under the constraints of film properties.The Skopos theory of film subtitle translation is to provide,within the constraints of time and space,a well-translated subtitle that can contribute to a good understanding of what is happening on the screen.In short,the end justifies the means.Therefore,during the process of subtitle translation,the subtitler should take all the factors into consideration to identify the translation purpose,and then adopt corresponding translation strategies.From this perspective,the author takes the Skopos theory as instruction and applies the reduction and addition method to analyze the film subtitle translation.In the age of globalization,foreign films are increasingly entering people’s lives.Watching foreign films is a popular and effective way to understand foreign cultures.However,in China,subtitle translation has not attracted as much academic attention as it deserves and few theories could be appropriately applied to subtitle translation.Therefore,the author hopes that subtitle translation could be paid more attention in terms of cross-cultural communication.

The English subtitle translation of Quanzhou’s World Heritage Application Documentary: A Frame Theory Perspective

Based on Fillmore’s frame theory, this paper examines the translator’s cognitive frame operation in the English subtitle translation of Quanzhou’s World Heritage application documentary. It analyzes and discusses how the translator maximizes translation effect between the source language and the target language, so as to enhance the readability of documentary subtitles and promote the spread of traditional Chinese culture. The findings are as follows: Firstly, in the translation process, the frame operations used by the translator include frame correspondence, intra-frame operations, frame replacement, frame perspective shift and frame transplantation. Secondly, cultural documentaries are full of culture-loaded words, for which the translator usually uses frame transplantation. Thirdly, due to the instantaneous nature of subtitles, intra-frame operations and frame replacement are applied in terms of cultural background of the target language audience. Besides, in order to enhance the audience’s reading experience, there may be some changes of narrative perspective in the English translation of cultural documentaries.

In recent years,with the booming development of the film industry,film subtitles play an increasingly important role in modern society.As one of the key links in cross-cultural communication,the quality of film subtitle translation affects the box office and viewing experience.Hi,Mom,a Chinese comedy based on the theme of mother’s love,which topped China’s box office during the Chinese New Year in 2021 and ascended to the third place in the global box office,high-quality subtitle translation is indispensable to its success.This paper discusses the subtitle translation of the film Hi,Mom based on the domestication and foreignization perspectives,so as to provide a reference for the Chinese-English translation of Chinese film.

This article conducts an analysis and exploration of the English subtitles translation of the domestic animated film Chang’an from the perspective of eco-translatology.Taking three-dimensional transformation as the entry point,it analyzes the adaptation and selection of subtitle translators in the translation process from the dimensions of language,culture,and communication in Chang’an,aiming to enrich the practical analysis of eco-translatology and provide valuable insights and references for the theoretical construction and practical application of eco-translatology.This article enriches the practical analysis of eco-translatology and also validates to a certain extent the applicability of“three-dimensional”transformation.

In recent years,as the cross-cultural exchanges between China and other countries have become more frequent,more and more English film and television works have flooded into the Chinese market,attracting the attention of many audiences.In order to enable Chinese audiences to better appreciate these film and television works,high-quality and high-level subtitle translation is indispensable.Since China started late in film and television sector,there are still many immature places in the research on subtitle translation.This article aims to analyze several classic English film and television works,summarize,and study the detailed factors that affect subtitle translation.

Audiovisual production,as social media,plays a considerable role in cultural exchanges around the world,for it is one of the ways for people to know more about exotic cultures.At the same time,due to language barriers,the importance of subtitle trans⁃lation is gradually recognized.The subtitle translation can go beyond the limits of time and space to faithfully reproduce the story plot and skillfully convey the feelings.From the perspective of relevance theory,the subtitle translation of The Big Bang Theory is chosen as a case in this paper to analyze the inferential process in the following three relevant aspects:relevance in context,rele⁃vance in culture,and relevance in the audience.

The subtitle translation of Movie from the Perspective of Multimodal Discourse Analysis

With the development of science and technology,especially the development of digital technology,mankind has entered the age of multimedia,and the mode of human life and communication have undergone profound changes.As a single communicative mode,language has been gradually replaced by complex communicative mode composed of language,image and sound.Multimodal discourse analysis provides a new perspective for discourse analysis composed of a variety of symbols,which can help readers understand how symbols such as images and music work together and form meanings.Firm analysis is often analyzed from the perspective of psychology,aesthetics and other macro aspects,but seldom from the perspective of linguistics.The paper analyzes how the theory of multimodal discourse analysis affects the translation of film by discussing the interaction between film translation and multimodal modes in the film Pride and Prejudice.

The Study of subtitle translation Standard Degree from the Perspective of the Skopos Theory

Nowadays,it is unprecedentedly convenient to watch British and American TV series and films in China because of the contribution of Fansub( short for fan-subtitled) Group-the organization of fans that translates foreign films or foreign television programs and subtitles them into a language other than that of original.To many audiences,watching Fansub Group's works is not only a recreational activity,but also an effective way to learn authentic English.This paper,from the perspective of the Skopos Theory,established reasonable standards of appraising subtitle translation and analyzed over 900-minute subtitle translations according to the set standards.This paper has drawn the conclusion that in spite of some trivial deficiencies,Fansub Groups' translations,with diverse characteristics,are generally qualified to satisfy audiences ' different needs.

On subtitle translation of Game of Thrones from the Perspective of Eco-translatology

HBO TV series–Game of Thrones has gone viral ever since its first release in 2011 and its soaring popularity among Chineseaudience has no doubt benefited from the"appropriate"E-C subtitles attached to it. This paper, through the analysis and discussion ofthe E-C subtitles of Game of Thrones from the perspective of Eco-translatology, demonstrates that the approach of translation as Adap-tation and Selection(TAS) proves to be operational in subtitle translation, and gives further recommendations in the communicativetransformation of subtitle translation.

A Research on the Documentary subtitle translation from the Perspective of Reception Aesthetics Theory——A Case Study of the subtitle translation of The Story of China

Documentary is an important form of audiovisual works with the characteristics of both authenticity and artistry, which plays a significant role in the spread of culture and knowledge. Reception aesthetics is a theory of literary criticism raised by the German literature theoretician and aesthetician Hans Robert Jauss in the 1960 s, in which the focus of literary studies is shifted from the author and text to the reader. It emphasizes reader's participation and acceptance during the text understanding, by shifting the central position of studies from the author and work to the reader. It claims that only the works that have been comprehended and delivered by readers possess artistic value and meaning. With the characteristic of audience-centered, documentary happens to coincide with reception aesthetics theory which takes readers' horizon of expectation into consideration. Applying the theory of reception aesthetics as its interpretive framework, this paper makes an effort to study subtitle translation of documentary films.
