The Hammett correlation has been successfully applied to electrophilic additions of the olefins. However, the correlation between the structure and the reactivity in electrophilic addition to aliphatic non-conjugated olefins by the Taft equation has been less successful. Attempts to improve the Taft relation have not been particularly successful so far. The effect of substituents on the rate of addition was interpreted by the increase or decrease of charge in the double bond and /or by the deformation of the z-electron cloud. However, experimental and theoretical supports have not been found for these points of view.
