The scattered distribution of the lattice parameters in the Seemann-Bohlin method for stress measurement was discussed.A linear relation can be achieved by modification with the theory deduced from Kroner ***,the Seemann-Bohlin method cannot achieve good accuracy in comparison with the Bragg-Brentauo method,particularly for low stress values.

＜正＞In-situ stress state has been shown to be important for engineering constructions. As for large and medium-size works,it is imperative to have in-situ stress measurement as a key procedure,so that we can use the favorable and avoid the unfavorable aspects of the stress state to achieve reasonable designs. The relationship between the in-situ stress measurement and engineering as well as the applications of the stress data to various fields of engineering are discussed in the present paper.

The Urea Oya Multipurpose Development Project （UMDP） is a water transfer, hydropower and irrigation in the south-eastern part of the central highland region of Sri Lanka. During geotechnical site investigation program 42 hydraulic fracture tests and 42 impression packer tests were carried out in 3 boreholes to about 840 m depth. Based on the stress measurements the minimum and maximum horizontal stress ratios were calculated. In situ stress computations at all the tests were based on the assumption that the principal stress components were vertical （σv） and horizontal （σH and σh, the maximum and minimum, respectively）. The results of the measurements had a direct impact on the design of the major openings bearing a high overburden--the underground powerhouse and the transformer cavern--and revealed a significant optimization potential concerning the selection of the lining system of the pressure shaft.

A real-time and visible stress monitoring method based on a pure organic mechanoresponsive luminogen(MRL)was proposed in this work.1,1,2,2-tetrakis(4-nitrophenyl)ethene(TPE-4 N)could produce ultrasensitive and visible mechanoresponsive *** specimens were coated with a uniform TPE-4 N film,wherein mechanical deformation was transformed into visible *** tests were conducted to determine the calibration relationship between the stress value and fluorescence *** accuracy of stress measured using the organic MRL method was investigated on single-edge notched tension *** show that the stress distribution obtained using the proposed method agrees well with that calculated using ANSYS *** organic MRL method may open up new opportunities for large-scale,full-field,on-site monitoring of stress distribution in complicated structural components.

In order to study pillar and overburden response to retreat mining, a ground control program was conducted at a Central Appalachian Mine. The program consisted of several monitoring methods including a seismic monitoring system, borehole pressure cells in the pillars, and time-lapse photogrammetry of the pillar ribs. Two parallel geophone arrays were installed, one on each side of the panel with the sensors mounted 3 m into the roof. A total of fourteen geophones recorded more than 5000 events during the panel retreat. A MIDAS datalogger was used to record pressure from borehole pressure cells(BPCs)located in two adjacent pillars that were not mined during retreat. A series of photographs were taken of the pillars that had the BPCs as the face approached so that deformation of the entire rib could be monitored using photogrammetry. Results showed that pillar stability and cave development were as expected. The BPCs showed an increase in loading when the face was 115 m inby and a clear onset of the forward abutment at 30 m. The photogrammetry results displayed pillar deformation corresponding to the increased loading. The microseismic monitoring results showed the overburden caving inby the face, again as expected. The significance of these results lies in two points,(1) we can quantify the safe manner in which this mine is conducting retreating operations, and(2) we can use volumetric technologies(photogrammetry and microseismic) to monitor entire volumes of the mine in addition to the traditional point-location geotechnical measurements(BPCs).

Effective stress Reduction in Diamond Films on Alumina by Carbon Ion Implantation

We show the effective stress reduction in diamond films by implanting carbon ions into alumina substrates prior to the diamond deposition. Residual stresses in the films are evaluated by Raman spectroscopy and a more reliable method for stress determination is presented for the quantitative measurement of stress evolution. It is found that compressive stresses in the diamond films can be partly offset by the compressive stresses in the alumina substrates, which are caused by the ion pre-implantation. At the same time, the difference between the offset by the pre-stressed substrates and the total stress reduction indicates that some other mechanisms are also active
