Manual and alternative therapies as non-pharmacological interventions for pain and stress control in newborns:a systematic review

Background Supporting therapies that provide stress and pain control of preterm and term newborns infants contribute positively to the neuropsychomotor development.Non-pharmacological interventions that involve manual techniques are described,considering protocols that can be reproduced by physical therapists,with positive and negative outcomes reports.Data sources Systematic review follows PRISMA 2020 statements guidelines.Primary and specific health sciences databases(Science Direct,Pubmed,Scielo,Embase and Scopus)were consulted between October 2021 and May 2022.Articles con-sidered were clinical trials,randomized or not,that included descriptions of the type of intervention as non-pharmacological and that studied the following outcomes:"pain"and"stress".Results Fifteen articles were selected for analysis,reaching a methodological quality of at least 3 on the Jadad Scale for the Quality of Researched Sources.The non-pharmacological therapies most applied in isolation were massage,swaddling or wrapping,gentle touch and kinesthetic stimulation,and the combined therapies were non-nutritive sucking and swad-dling,oral sucrose and swaddling,sensory stimulation and familiar odors,and sensory saturation.The outcomes found were relaxation,pain,and stress reduction after the application of painful procedures.The behavioral changes included crying,grimacing,yawning,sneezing,jerky arm or leg movements,startles,and finger flaring.The vital signs included heart rate,blood oxygen saturation level,and pulse respiration.Conclusions Combined techniques lead to better results in controlling neonatal pain when compared to isolated techniques.They can be applied both in preterm and term infants in a safe way and are reproducible in any health unit in a simple and economical way.

CKL2 mediates the crosstalk between abscisic acid and brassinosteroid signaling to promote swift growth recovery after stress in Arabidopsis

Plants must adapt to the constantly changing environment. Adverse environmental conditions trigger various defensive responses, including growth inhibition mediated by phytohormone abscisic acid(ABA). When the stress recedes, plants must transit rapidly from stress defense to growth recovery, but the underlying mechanisms by which plants switch promptly and accurately between stress resistance and growth are poorly understood. Here, using quantitative phosphoproteomics strategy, we discovered that early ABA signaling activates upstream components of brassinosteroid(BR) signaling through CASEIN KINASE 1-LIKE PROTEIN 2(CKL2).Further investigations showed that CKL2 interacts with and phosphorylates BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE1(BRI1), the main BR receptor, to maintain the basal activity of the upstream of BR pathway in plants exposed to continuous stress conditions. When stress recedes, the elevated phosphorylation of BRI1 by CKL2 contributes to the swift reactivation of BR signaling, which results in quick growth recovery. These results suggest that CKL2 plays a critical regulatory role in the rapid switch between growth and stress resistance. Our evidence expands the understanding of how plants modulate stress defense and growth by integrating ABA and BR signaling cascades.

Comparison of the signaling pathways of wing dimorphism regulated by biotic and abiotic stress in the brown planthopper

Wing polymorphism is an evolutionary trait that is widely present in various insects and provides a model system for studying the evolutionary significance of insect dispersal.The brown planthopper(BPH,Nilaparvata lugens)can alter its wing morphs un-der biotic and abiotic stress.However,whether differential signaling pathways are induced by the 2 types of stress remain largely unknown.Here,we screened a number of candidate genes through weighted gene co-expression network analysis(WGCNA)and found that ornithine decarboxylase(NIODC),a key enzyme in the synthesis of polyamines,was as-sociated with wing differentiation in BPH and mainly responded to abiotic stress stimuli.We analyzed the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment pathways of dif-ferentially expressed genes under the 2 stresses by transcriptomic comparison,and found that biotic stress mainly influenced insulin-related signaling pathways while abiotic stress mainly influenced hormone-related pathways.Moreover,we found that insulin receptor 1(NllnRI)may regulate wing differentiation of BPH by responding to both biotic and abiotic stress,but NllnR2 only responded to biotic stress.Similarly,the juvenile hormone epoxide hydrolase associated with juvenile hormone degradation and NIODC may regu-late wing differentiation mainly through abiotic stress.A model based on the genes and stresses to modulate the wing dimorphism of BPH was proposed.These findings present a comprehensive molecular mechanism for wing polymorphism in BPH induced by biotic and abiotic stress.

Integrated metabolism and epigenetic modifications in the macrophages of mice in responses to cold stress

The negative effects of low temperature can readily induce a variety of diseases.We sought to understand the reasons why cold stress induces disease by studying the mechanisms of fine-tuning in macrophages following cold exposure.We found that cold stress triggers increased macrophage activation accompanied by metabolic reprogramming of aerobic glycolysis.The discovery,by genome-wide RNA sequencing,of defective mitochondria in mice macrophages following cold exposure indicated that mitochondrial defects may contribute to this process.In addition,changes in metabolism drive the differentiation of macrophages by affecting histone modifications.Finally,we showed that histone acetylation and lactylation are modulators of macrophage differentiation following cold exposure.Collectively,metabolism-related epigenetic modifications are essential for the differentiation of macrophages in cold-stressed mice,and the regulation of metabolism may be crucial for alleviating the harm induced by cold stress.

It is increasingly common to find alarming news related to tragic events occurring in schools around the world.Being able to deal with these situations without getting hurt is a task not suitable for everyone.In general,teachers are the ones who must deal with this type of situation in addition to other daily problems that appear in any classroom that make the level of stress to which they are subjected can become dangerous.This research aims to know the current situation of teachers in a region of southeastern Spain in terms of their level of work stress,resilience,and other associated variables,for which an ex post facto quantitative approach study was designed.For this purpose,an ad hoc sociodemographic questionnaire,and questions based on the Teaching and Learning International Survey of the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development,the Maslach Burnout Inventory,and the Brief Resilient Coping Scale were applied.The participating sample consisted of 470 teachers.The main findings were that 6%of teachers had burnout(high emotional exhaustion,high cynicism,and low professional effectiveness simultaneously).Resilience correlated inversely with stress,emotional exhaustion,cynicism,excessive teaching,and difficulty maintaining classroom discipline.In conclusion,knowing the needs of teachers allows us to reflect on what kind of prevention and intervention programs are necessary to improve the well-being of teachers and thus improve the quality of education.

Resilience mediates the association between alexithymia and stress in Chinese medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic

Background Evidence indicates that medical students have had high rates of mental health problems,especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,which could be affected by alexithymia—a marked dysfunction in emotional awareness,social attachment and interpersonal relationships—and stress.However,psychological resilience might relieve alexithymia and stress levels.Aims This study aimed to investigate the role of resilience in alexithymia and stress in medical students.Methods A total of 470 medical students completed online and offline surveys,including the Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20(TAS-20),the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale(CD-RISC)and the College Student stress Questionnaire(CSSQ).The data of five participants were excluded because of a lack of integrity.Mann-Whitney U test or Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare group differences in the CD-RISC scores among categorical variables.Spearman correlation analysis was employed to evaluate the associations between resilience and alexithymia and between resilience and stress.Mediation analysis was used to test the mediating effect of resilience between alexithymia and stress.Results Of the medical students considered in the analysis,382(81.28%)were female and 88(18.72%)were male.There was a significant negative correlation between the TAS-20 scores and the total and subtotal CD-RISC scores(pstress(total effect=1.0447,pstress through resilience(effect=0.1670,95%CI:0.069 to 0.281).Conclusions Our findings suggest that resilience might effectively reduce alexithymia and stress.They also contributed to a better understanding of the mediating effects of resilience on alexithymia and stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.The evidence from these results encourages universities to focus on improving students’resilience.

Nephrotic syndrome(NS)is the most common glomerular disease in children,affecting about 7-16 in 100,000 children under 16 years old worldwide[1].Children with NS often experience significant emotional and behavioral problems,especially with frequent relapses,steroid dependence,steroid resistance,or maternal distress[2].Psychological stress may trigger proteinuria in children with steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome[3].The presence of NS in a child also causes burden on family members,especially the mother[4],in association with psychological distress.

Potential significance of CX3CR1 dynamics in stress resilience against neuronal disorders

Recent findings have implicated inflammatory responses in the central nervous system in a variety of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases,and the understanding and control of immunological responses could be a major factor of future therapeutic strategies for neurological disorders.Microglia,derived from myelogenous cells,respond to a number of stimuli and make immune responses,resulting in a prominent role as cells that act on inflammation in the central nervous system.Fractalkine(FKN or CX3CL1)signaling is an important factor that influences the inflammatory response of microglia.The receptor for FKN,CX3CR1,is usually expressed in microglia in the brain,and therefore the inflammatory response of microglia is modified by FKN.Reportedly,FKN often suppresses inflammatory responses in microglia and activation of its receptor may be effective in the treatment of inflammatory neurological disorders.However,it has also been suggested that inflammatory responses facilitated by FKN signaling aggravate neurological disorders.Thus,further studies are still required to resolve the conflicting interpretation of the protective or deleterious contribution of microglial FKN signaling.Yet notably,regulation of FKN signaling has recently been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of human diseases,although not neurological diseases.In addition,a CX3CR1 inhibitor has been developed and successfully tested in animal models,and it is expected to be in human clinical trials in the future.In this review,I describe the potential therapeutic consideration of microglial CX3CR1 dynamics through altered FKN signaling.

Paleomagnetic constraints on Paleogene-Neogene rotation and paleo-stress in the northern Qaidam Basin

Knowing the rotation and paleo-stress history in Qaidam Basin is a fundamental parameter to quantify the mechanism of intracontinental deformation in Tibetan Plateau.However,few studies have been conducted on tectonic rotation and stress evolution over long timescales in the Qaidam Basin.Here,we report new magnetic declination and the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility(AMS)from a~52–7 Ma sequence of fluvial and lacustrine sediments in the Dahonggou(DHG)section in the northern Qaidam Basin.The magnetic declination revealed that the northern Qaidam Basin underwent a clockwise rotation 25.1°±8.6°during~33–17 Ma,followed by a counterclockwise rotation 16.9°±6.8°during~17–13.5 Ma.The AMS results showed that the“earliest deformation”fabrics were interrupted by the“pencil structure”fabrics in the intervals of~52–45 and~21–15 Ma.The interruption,synchronous with the marked deceleration of the India-Asia convergence rate,indicates pulse of strong tectonic compressive stress.In addition,the AMS results documented a transition in stress direction from S-N to SW-NE at~15 Ma,suggesting a kinematic shift in the northeastern TP.Our constraints on the rotation and stress from the northern Qaidam Basin support the two-stage evolution of the Altyn Tagh Fault(ATF).The fast-rate slip motion on the ATF during the early Oligocene caused the clockwise rotation in the northern Qaidam Basin;the second stage with enhanced thrusting since the middle Miocene caused extensive crustal shortening and dispersive NW-trending folds and faults in the Qaidam Basin and the northeastern TP.

Elastic impedance inversion for stress indicator in weakly orthorhombic media

Hydraulic fracturing is a crucial technology for improving permeability and production of shale reservoirs.The precise estimation of the stress distribution has a significant guidance for optimizing the placement of hydraulic fracturing.Assuming that the shale gas reservoir is a weakly anisotropic medium with orthorhombic symmetry,a new stress indicator parameterized by rock mechanical parameters and fracture parameters is firstly presented to predict the differential horizontal stress ratio in shale gas reservoirs.Then,we derive a novel simplified P-to-P reflection coefficient and a logarithmic normalized elastic impedance(EI)as a function of Young’s modulus,Poisson’s ratio,Thomsen’s WA parameterδband normal excess compliance Z_(N).Next,we adopt azimuthal EI inversion in a Bayesian framework to estimate rock mechanics parameters and fracture parameters directly on a fractured shale gas field seismic data.Finally,the stress indicator is determined by utilizing four inverted parameters.Synthetic examples demonstrate that the proposed approach produces stable parameter estimates even with moderate noise,verifying the feasibility and effectiveness of the method.Test on a field data set illustrates that the inversion results can be reasonably estimated,and the stress indicator derived by the inversion accords with the geomechanics result.Compared with the previous method,the new stress indicator has a higher capability to describe stress characteristics in the shale reservoir.We conclude that this stress evaluation procedure can provide reliable guidance for well location deployment and hydraulic fracturing reformation.
