Background Although smoking is classified as a risk factor for severe COVID-19 outcomes,there is a scarcity of studies on prevalence of smoking during the COVID-19 pandemic.Thus,this study aims to analyze the trends of prevalence of smoking in adolescents over the COVID-19 pandemic period.Methods The present study used data from middle to high school adolescents between 2005 and 2021 who participated in the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey(KYRBS).We evaluated the smoking prevalence(ever or daily)by year groups and estimated the slope in smoking prevalence before and during the pandemic.Results A total of 1,137,823 adolescents participated in the study[mean age,15.04 years[95%confidence interval(CI)15.03-15.06];and male,52.4%(95%CI 51.7-53.1)].The prevalence of ever smokers was 27.7%(95%CI 27.3-28.1)between 2005 and 2008 but decreased to 9.8%(95%CI 9.3-10.3)in 2021.A consistent trend was found in daily smokers,as the estimates decreased from 5.4%(95%CI 5.2-5.6)between 2005 and 2008 to 2.3%(95%CI 2.1-2.5)in 2021.However,the downward slope in the overall prevalence of ever smokers and daily smokers became less pronounced in the COVID-19 pandemic period than in the pre-pandemic period.In the subgroup with substance use,the decreasing slope in daily smokers was significantly more pronounced during the pandemic than during the pre-pandemic period.Conclusions The proportion of ever smokers and daily smokers showed a less pronounced decreasing trend during the pandemic.The findings of our study provide an overall understanding of the pandemic's impact on smoking prevalence in adolescents.

Background:The preferred treatment for uncomplicated type B dissection(thoracic endovascular aortic repair[TEVAR]or medical)is still under debate.Since 2001,our center has performed TEVAR for uncomplicated type B dissection.Based on our data,5-and 10-year survival rates among patients with uncomplicated type B dissection after TEVAR were 96.5%and 83.0%,respectively.We,therefore,believe that TEVAR is preferable for uncomplicated type B dissections.This study analyzed the impact of a pre-operative smoking history on long-term survival after TEVAR in patients with uncomplicated type B dissections.Methods:From May 2001 to December 2013,data from 751 patients with type B dissections were collected and analyzed.Patients were divided into two groups(337 smoking patients and 414 non-smoking patients).The Kaplan-Meier method and log-rank test were used to compare survival curves of the two groups.Multivariable analyses using the Cox proportional hazards model were used to estimate the effects of smoking on survival rates.Results:The 5-and 10-year survival rates of non-smokers were 97.6%(95%confidence interval[CI],96.0%-99.2%)and 87.0%(95%CI,81.6%-92.7%),respectively,and 94.9%(95%CI,92.2%-97.7%)and 73.8%(95%CI,62.3%-87.5%)for smokers,respectively(Log-rank test,P=0.006).Multivariable analyses showed that smoking increased the risk of death during follow-up,2.1-fold when compared to non-smokers(P=0.039).Conclusion:A pre-operative smoking history increases long-term mortality rates after TEVAR in patients with uncomplicated type B dissections.

Impact of smoking on nasal mucociliary clearance time in Kano metropolis,Nigeria

Background:Mucociliary clearance is an important defense mechanism in human upper and lower respiratory airways.Impairment of this process by certain conditions such as cigarette smoking can predispose to chronic infection and neoplasm of the nose and paranasal sinuses.Methods:This was a cross-sectional study conducted in Kano metropolis,Nigeria.Eligible adults were enrolled,a saccharine test was conducted,and the nasal mucociliary clearance time was assessed.Analysis of the result was carried out using Statistical Product and Service Solutions version 23.0.Results:There were 225 participants categorized into 75 active smokers(33.3%),74 passive smokers(32.9%),and 76 nonsmokers(33.8%,living in a smoking-free zone).The age range of the participants was between 18 and 50 years,with a mean age of(31.2±5.6)years.All participants were males.There were 139(61.8%)of Hausa-Fulani ethnic group,24(10.7%)Yoruba,18(8.0%)Igbo,and 44(19.5%)other ethnic groups.Findings in this study showed that the average mucociliary clearance time among active smokers was prolonged([15.25±6.20]min)compared to passive([11.41±4.25]min)and nonsmokers([9.17±2.76]min)respectively,with a statistical significance(F=33.59,Psmoking is associated with prolonged nasal mucociliary clearance time.The number of cigarette sticks smoked per day was found to be an independent predictor of prolonged mucociliary clearance time.

Objective To update the estimated prevalence rates of smoking and examine major metabolic diseases associated with smoking status in Chinese adults. Methods Using a complex, multistage, probability sampling design, we recruited a nationally representative sample of 98,658 Chinese adults aged ≥18 years in 2010. Information on current, former, never, and passive smoking status was obtained using a standard questionnaire. All estimates were weighted to represent the overall Chinese adult population. Results The estimated proportion of current smokers was 28.3% for Chinese adults aged _〉18 years. The corresponding values of former and passive smokers were 5.1% and 21.4%, respectively. Additionally, former smokers were found to have a less favorable metabolic risk profile among all categories of smoking status in both men and women. The prevalence of metabolic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension also increased with a greater number of smoking pack-years in men. Conclusion The prevalences of current smoking and passive smoking remain high in Chinese adults.

Combined Effect of smoking and Obesity on Coronary Heart Disease Mortality in Male Veterans:A 30-year Cohort Study

Objective Evidence is lacking regarding the combined effects of smoking and obesity on mortality from coronary heart disease in male veterans.This study aimed to explore the combined effect of smoking and obesity on coronary heart disease mortality in male veterans in China.Methods A cohort of 1,268 male veterans from 22 veteran centers in Xi’an(Shaanxi Province,China)were followed up once every 2 years from February 1,1987 to October 30,2016.The endpoint was death from any cause.The hazard ratio(HR)of each risk factor and the 95%confidence interval(CI)were calculated using a multivariate Cox proportional hazard model.Results The total follow-up was 24394.21 person-years;each subject was followed up for a mean duration of 19.24 years.By the end of the study,of the 1,268 veterans,889 had died,363 were alive,and 16 were lost to follow-up.Cox regression analysis results revealed that current smoking(HR:1.552,95%CI:1.074–2.243),obesity(HR:1.625,95%CI:1.024–2.581),and the combined effect of the two factors(HR:2.828,95%CI:1.520–5.262)were associated with coronary heart disease mortality.Conclusion Our results suggest that obese veterans who smoke might be an important target population for coronary heart disease mortality control.

Objective:To investigate the effect of smoking and depression on hospital costs for lung cancer(LC).Methods:We extracted data on depression,smoking history,demographics,and hospital charges for patients with respiratory cancers(ICD-9 codes 161-163,165)from the 2008 Tennessee Hospital Discharge Data System.The sample(n=6665)was mostly white(86%)and male(57%).Age-adjusted rates were developed in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention methods,and hospital costs were compared for patients with LC with versus without depression and a smoking history.Results:Three findings(Psmoking versus those without such charac-teristics.Conclusion:While LC is more prevalent among blacks and men,depression is higher among female and white patients.Since depression with higher costs existed among LC patients,our find-ings point to(1)the possibility of cost savings by diagnosing and treating depression among LC patients,and(2)implementation of proven smoking cessation programs to reduce LC morbidity and hospital costs.

AIM： To collect the evidence to estimate the correlation between smoking and the incidence of dry eye. METHODS： The Pub Med,EMBASE,the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials（CENTRAL,last issue）,CBM（Chinese Bio Medical Literature Database）,and CNKI（China National Knowledge Infrastructure/Chinese Academic Journals full-text Database） were searched for eligible studies published from January1964 to December 2015 to investigate the association of smoking with the risk of dry eye.The odds ratio（OR）and 95% confidence interval（CI） were summarized and calculated.The extracted studies were pooled by the fixed-effects model or a random-effects model. RESULTS： Two cohort studies and eight cross-sectional surveys were included in our Meta-analysis.There was no statistically significant relationship between current（OR=1.32; 95% CI： 0.99-1.76; P=0.055）or ever smoking（OR=1.12; 95% CI： 0.98-1.28; P=0.107）and the risk of dry eye among the studies,even when age and gender were adjusted（OR=1.16; 95% CI： 0.83-1.64; P=0.383）.In the sensitivity analysis in which only general population were included,the association was significant between smoking and dry eye（OR=1.50; 95%CI： 1.08-2.09; P=0.016）.CONCLUSION： This Meta-analysis suggests that smoking may associate with the risk of dry eye in general population.

Background:Tobacco consumption is more life-threatening in people living with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)than within the general population;therefore,people living with HIV(PLWH)should be highly motivated to take action towards quitting smoking at or after HIV diagnosis.The aim of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to investigate changes in smoking habits among PLWH over time.Main text:We considered prospective and retrospective cohort studies including PLWH aged 15 years and above,which have measured the prevalence of tobacco smoking(current,former or never)at study initiation and completion,and published between January 1,2000 and April 15,2018 without language or geographical restriction.We searched PubMed,EMBASE,Web of Science,Africa Journal Online,and Global Index Medicus.We used a random-effects model to pool data.Nine studies were included.The proportion of current and former smokers decreased slightly over time,around 2.5 and 3.8%,respectively.However,the proportion of never smokers decreased sharply by 22.5%,and there were 2.1 and 1.5%PLWH who shifted from never and former smoking to current smoking,respectively.On the other hand,10.5%PLWH shifted from current to former smoking,7.1%tried to quit tobacco consumption but failed,and 10.1%stayed in the"never smoking"category over time.Conclusions:PLWH seem not to change positively their smoking habits towards quitting tobacco consumption.There is urgent need to increase actions aimed at helping this vulnerable population to quit tobacco consumption,including individually tailored therapeutic education,psychosocial and pharmacologic supports.

Feasibility and acceptability of using Wi-Fi access points to provide smoking cessation help at 17 airports and 38 railway stations across China

Background: The use of mobile phone significantly improved the outcomes of tobacco cessation. However, its feasibility and acceptability were unclear in the Chinese population. This study was to explore the feasibility of using Wi-Fi access points (APs) as a platform to provide smoking cessation help at 17 airports and 38 railway stations across China. Methods: This study was divided into two stages: platform development and population survey. In the first stage, a survey platform was developed and incorporated into Wi-Fi service at airports and railway stations, which could provide survey content as a pop-up window when participants tried to access the Wi-Fi service. In the second stage, a population survey was conducted to explore the intention to receive tobacco cessation support. Results: A total of 20,199 users participated and 13,628 users submitted the survey, with a response rate of 67.47%. The smoking rate was 30.9%. A total of 86.58% of smoking participants and 2.44% of non-smoking participants wished to receive tobacco cessation support, respectively. The multivariate analysis showed intention to receive support did not differ in age, gender, and heaviness of smoking (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Providing tobacco cessation support via Wi-Fi APs is feasible and efficient, and smokers have high intention to receive tobacco cessation support. It is suggested hospitals, academia, information technology industries, and government agencies must work together to provide tobacco cessation support via mHealth.
