In order to adapt to the complex and changeable marine environment such as wind, wave and current, the physical simulation experiment is usually needed in the design of deep-sea flexible pipeline laying system. In reality, the flexible pipeline laying system is very large and the experimental cost is huge. Therefore, when analyzing this system, it is necessary to carry out scaled model experiments to verify the rationality of it. Taking the flexible pipeline laying system working under four-level sea conditions as an example, this paper deduces the similarity criteria of the scaled model according to the Similarity Theory. According to the required experimental site, the sizes and materials of model are selected, and then the physical quantities of the model and their similarity ratio corresponding to the prototype are determined. According to the physical quantities of the experimental model, the similarity of dynamic characteristics and structural strength between the model and the prototype are verified by Adams and ANSYS Workbench. The research shows that the scaled model and prototype based on Similarity Theory can meet the established similarity relationship, and the scaled model experiment is an effective way to verify the rationality of the design of flexible pipeline laying system.

Over-height truck collisions with railway bridges:attenuation of damage using crash beams

Railway bridges are susceptible to over-height truck collisions and to address this issue,it is necessary to attenuate the effect of these impacts to ensure the safety of transportation *** study experimentally investigates the effectiveness of crash beams as a cushioning mechanism for railway bridges against ***-height truck and railway bridge impact events were simulated in a 1:5 scale *** design parameters such as the stiffness of the crash beam and the bridge supports were scaled to evaluate different levels of *** experiments were conducted with five configurations consisting of four different types of crash beams and one no-crash beam *** results show that crash beams attenuate bridge total peak dynamic displacement responses between 14.5%and 35.7%,depending on the intensity of the impact and crash beam *** addition,the results show that the average effectiveness in attenuating residual deformation for all four crash beams ranges from 43.03%to 83.40%.Finally,various designs and their effectiveness against lateral impacts with different speeds are *** overall scope of this research is to provide objective information about the design of crash beams for railway bridges based on their response to over-height truck collisions at various speeds.

Shake table testing of a multi-tower connected hybrid structure

Many single-tower reinforced concrete core wall-steel frame （RCC-SF） buildings have been built in China, but there are no buildings of different-height multi-tower hybrid system. A multi-tower RCC-SF tall building was thus studied because of its structural complexity and irregularity. First, a 1/15 scaled model structure was designed and tested on the shake table under minor, moderate, and major earthquake levels. Then, the dynamic responses of the model structure were interpreted to those of the prototype structure according to the similitude theory. Experimental results demonstrate that, despite the complexity of the structure, the lateral deformation bends as the ＂bending type＂ and the RC core walls contribute more than the steel frames to resist seismic loads. The maximum inter-story drift of the complex building under minor earthquakes is slightly beyond the elastic limitation specified in the Chinese code, and meets code requirements under major earthquakes. From the test results some suggestions are provided that could contribute favorable effect on the seismic behavior and the displacement of the building.

This article presents the newly designed oblique towing test in the horizontal plane for the scaled model of 4 500 m deep sea open-framed Remotely Operated Vehicle （ROV）,which is being researched and developed by Shanghai Jiao Tong *** hydrodynamics coefficients measurement is significant for the maneuverability and control system *** scaled model of ROV was constructed by 1：*** tests of large drift angle were conducted through Large Amplitude Horizontal Planar Motion Mechanism （LAHPMM） under low *** regression method is adopted to process the test data and obtain the related hydrodynamic *** were designed for the horizontal plane motion of large drift angle to verify the coefficients *** the results show that the data can satisfy with the design requirements of the ROV developed.

High-Velocity Impact Studies on scaled Leading Edges of Horizontal Tail with Smart Composite Layers

Bird strike studies on typical aluminium leading edges of the Horizontal Tail (HT) with and without Glass Fibre Shape Memory Polymer (GF-SMP) layers are carried out. A one-fifth scaled model of HT is designed and fabricated. The parameters like bird dimension and energy requirements are accordingly scaled to conduct the bird strike tests. Two leading-edge components have been prepared, namely one with AL 2024-T3 aluminium alloy and the other specimen of the same dimension and material, additionally having GF-SMP composite layers inside the metallic leading edge, in order to enhance its impact resistance. Bird strike experiments are performed on both the specimens, impacting at the centre of the leading edge in the nose tip region with an impact velocity of 115 m/s. The test component is instrumented with linear post-yield strain gauges on the top side and the PZT sensors on the bottom. Furthermore, the impact scenario is monitored using a high-speed camera at 7000 fps. The bird strike event is simulated by an equation of state model, in which the mass of the bird is idealized using smooth particle hydrodynamics element in PAMCRASH? explicit solver. The strain magnitude and its pattern including time duration are found to be in a good correlation between test and simulation. Key metrics are evaluated to devise an SHM scheme for the load and impact event monitoring using strain gauges and PZT sensors. GF-SMP layers have improved the impact resistance of the aluminium leading edge which is certainly encouraging towards finding a novel solution for the high-velocity impact.
