In vitro effects of salvia officinalis *** oil on Candida albicans

Objective:To determine the anticandidal activities of salvia officinalis L.(***)essential oil against Candida albicans(***)and the inhibitory effects on the adhesion of *** to polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA)resin ***:Disc diffusion method was first used to test the anticandidal activities of the *** *** oil against the reference strain(ATCC 90028)and 2 clinical strains of *** the minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC)and minimal lethal concentration(MLX)were determined by modified membrane *** adhesion of *** to PMMA resin surface was assessed after immersion with *** *** oil at various concentrations of 1XMIC.0.5XMIC and 0.25XMIC at room temperature for30 ***-way ANOVA was used to compare the Candida cell adhesion with the pretreatment agents and Tukey's test was used for multiple ***:*** *** oil exhibited anticandidal activity against all strains of *** with inhibition zone ranging from 40.5 mm to 19.5 *** MIC and MLC of the oil were determined as 2.780 g/L against all test *** to the effects on *** adhesion to PMMA resin surface,it was found that immersion in the essential oil at concentrations of 1XMIC(2.780 g/L).0.5XMIC(1.390 g/L)and0.25XMIC(0.695 g/L)for 30 min significantly reduced the adhesion of all 3 test strains to PMMA resin surface in a dose dependent manner(P<0.05).Conclusions:*** *** oil exhibited anticandidal activities against *** and had inhibitory effects on the adhesion of the cells to PMMA resin *** further testing and development,*** essential oil may be used as an antifungal denture cleanser to prevent candidal adhesion and thus reduce the risk of candida-associated denture stomatitis.

Antispasmodic Effects of salvia officinalisin Isolated Ileum of Rabbit

salvia officinalis has been commonly used in Syria and other Middle East countries in popular medicine for many medical purposes. One of the strong claims about its properties is the spasmolytic effect. The aim of this research was to investigate the spasmolytic effect of ethanolic extract of salvia officinalis in isolated rabbit ileum preparations. Male rabbits were sacrificed and portions of ileum were isolated and mounted in Tyrode’s solution. Afterwards, the experiments were performed according to different groups with different spasmogenic agents: the first group was only with spontaneous contraction, the second was KCl-induced contractions and the third was Carbachol-induced contractions. The examined extract was added cumulatively in all previous groups. Verapamil was used as a reference. The results showed profound relaxing effect of S. officinalis extract in mentioned groups, especially in the group of KCl-induced contraction. These findings suggest that the main mechanism of the spasmolytic action is related to the inhibition of calcium entry through cell membrane as well as via internal stores.

Herbgenomics is an emerging field of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)research and *** combining TCM research with genomics,herbgenomics can help to establish the scientific validity of TCM and bring it into wider usage within the field of *** Linn.(***.)is a large genus of Labiatae that includes important medicinal *** this herbgenomics study,the complete chloroplast(cp)genomes of two salvia spp.—namely,*** and ***,which are used as a surrogate for ***—were sequenced and compared with those of two other reported salvia spp.—namely,*** and *** genome organization,gene number,type,and repeat sequences were *** annotation results showed that both salvia plants contain 114 unique genes,including 80 protein-coding,30 transfer RNA(tRNA),and four ribosomal RNA(rRNA)*** sequence analysis revealed 21 forward and 22 palindromic sequences in both salvia cp genomes,and 17 and 21 tandem repeats in *** and ***,respectively.A synteny comparison of the salvia *** genomes showed a high degree of sequence similarity in the coding regions and a relatively high divergence of the intergenic *** alignment and single-nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)analyses found some candidate fragments to identify salvia spp.,such as the intergenic region of the trnV–ndhC,trnQ–rps16,atpI–atpH,psbA–ycf3,ycf1,rpoC2,ndhF,matK,rpoB,rpoA,and accD *** of the results—including the repeat sequences and SNP sites,the inverted repeat(IR)region border,and the phylogenetic analysis—showed that *** and *** are extremely similar from a genetic *** cp genome sequences of the two salvia *** here will pave the way for breeding,species identification,phylogenetic evolution,and cp genetic engineering studies of salvia medicinal plants.

GABAA Receptor Modulation by Compounds Isolated from salvia trilobaL.

salvia triloba, traditionally known as Greek sage, has been used to enhance memory, as a sedative and to treat headaches. Pharmacological evaluation of purified extracts and isolated compounds of S. triloba were carried out on functional assays using two-electrode voltage clamp methods on recombinant GABA receptors expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes. Bio-assay guided fractionation led to seven compounds being isolated from S. triloba: ursolic acid, carnosol, oleanolic acid, salvigenin, rosmanol, cirsimaritin and hispidulin. The purified extracts of S. triloba inhibited 54% of the current produced by 300 μM GABA at α1β2γ2L GABAA receptors. Ursolic acid, carnosol, oleanolic acid and rosmanol also acted as negative allosteric modulators. The flavonoids salvigenin, cirsimaritin and hispidulin acted as positive modulators when applied in the presence of low concentrations of GABA but in the presence of high concentrations of GABA acted as negative modulators, demonstrating a biphasic action. These results are consistent with the concept that salvia triloba may have cognition enhancing properties. In most cases these activities are likely to be occurring via different modulatory sites on GABAA receptor complexes. It may be that the combination of these activities permits cognition enhancement whilst offering protection from convulsant activity.

Effects of extract F of red-rooted salvia on mucosal lesions of gastric corpus and antrum induced by hemorrhagic shock-reperfusion in rats

AIM: To compare the effects of extract F of red-rooted salvia (EFRRS) on mucosal lesions of gastric corpus and antrum induced by hemorrhagic shock and reperfusion in rats. METHODS: The rats were subject to hemorrhagic shock and followed by reperfusion, and were divided randomly into two groups. Group 1 received saline, and group 2 received EFRRS intravenously. The index of gastric mucosal lesions (IGML) was expressed as the percentage of lesional area in the corpus or antrum. The degree of gastric mucosal lesions (DGML) was catalogued grade 0,1,2 and 3. The concentrations of prostaglandins (PGs) were measured by radioimmunoassay. The concentration of MDA was measured according to the procedures of Asakawa. The activity of SOD was measured by the biochemical way. The growth rates or inhibitory rates of above-mentioned parameters were calculated. RESULTS: As compared with IGML (%), grade 3 damage (%) and MDA content (nmol/g tissue) of gastric antrum which were respectively 7.96 +/- 0.59, 34.86 +/- 4.96 and 156.98 +/- 16.12, those of gastric corpus which were respectively 23.18 +/- 6.82, 58.44 +/- 9.07 and 230.56 +/- 19.37 increased markedly (P <0.01), whereas the grade 0 damage, grade 1 damage, the concentrations of PGE(2) and PGI(2)(pg/mg tissue), the ratio of PGI(2)/TXA(2) and the activity of SOD (U/g tissue) of corpus which were respectively 3.01 +/- 1.01, 8.35 +/- 1.95, 540.48 +/- 182.78, 714.38 +/- 123.74, 17.38 +/- 5.93 and 134.29 +/- 13.35 were markedly lower than those of antrum which were respectively 13.92 +/- 2.25, 26.78 +/- 6.06, 2218.56 +/- 433.12, 2531.76 +/- 492.35, 43.46 +/- 8.51 and 187.45 +/- 17.67 (P<0.01) after hemorrhagic shock and *** intravenous EFRRS, the growth rates (%) of grade 0 damage, grade 1 damage, the concentrations of PGE(2) and PGI(2), the ratio of PGI(2)/TXA(2) and the activity of SOD of corpus which were respectively 632.56, 308.62, 40.75, 74.75, 92.29 and 122.25 were higher than those in antrum which were respe

A Demographic Structure of Populations of salvia LilacinocoeruleaNevski, a Rare Species Endemic to the Western Pamir-Alay (Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan)

salvia lilacinocoerulea Nevski (Lamiaceae) is an endemic to the Western Pamir-Alay mountain range. Usually it grows on eroded clay soils among sparse juniper forests in the middle mountain belt. Studied coenopopulations of S. lilacinocoerulea are normal, but are not complete. Coenopopulations self-maintenance is carried out by the seed of renewal. The characteristic spectrum of S. lilacinocoerulea coenopopulation is centered, with a peak in the middle-generative individuals. In most cases, specific developmental spectrum of coenopopulation does not coincide with the characteristic ones. The demography structure of mostly investigated coenopopulations is satisfactory. The population growing on the grey clay soil, on strongly eroded slope among sparse juniper woodland was evaluated as critical due to absence in ontogenetic spectrum young individuals and small percentage of generative plant as well.

Aromas of salviaSpecies Enhance Everyday Prospective Memory Performance in Healthy Young Adults

Research has previously demonstrated that aromas of both salvia officinalis and salvia lavandulaefolia are capable of modulating aspects of retrospective memory, attention and mood. This study is the first to report the potential for these aromas to enhance everyday prospective memory performance in healthy young adults. In an independent groups design, three conditions, salvia officinalis aroma, Saliva lavandulaefolia aroma and no aroma were employed with 45 healthy volunteers in each condition. Prospective memory performance was assessed using the Prospective Remembering Video Procedure. Data analysis revealed that the salvia officinalis aroma group performed significantly better than the control group on both event and action subscales of the prospective memory task. Saliva lavandulaefolia aroma only led to enhancement for the event measure when compared to controls. No differences were found between the aroma conditions. These findings offer support for those previously reported for the effects of the aromas of salvia sp. on cognition and again demonstrate differential effects of the two aromas. The results are considered in terms of pharmacological mechanisms.

Aims Adaptive convergence in floral phenotype among plants sharing a pollinator guild has been acknowledged in the concept of pollination ***,many plants display traits associated with a given syndrome,but are visited by multiple *** situation may indicate the beginning of a pollinator shift or may result in a stable situation with adaptations to different *** salvia stachydifolia,a previous study suggested that flower shape is optimized to maximize the contribution to pollination of bees and ***,we studied three additional aspects of its floral biology:sexual phases,nectar dynamics and breeding system,and examined their connection with pollinators’behaviour to explore the presence of adaptations to bee and/or hummingbird *** Using a greenhouse population,we applied five pollination treatments to characterize breeding *** determine sexual phases,we recorded flower opening,anther dehiscence,corolla fall and stigma ***,we characterized nectar volume and concentration dynamics along the ***,to determine pollinator assemblage and visitation patterns,we performed field observations and recorded pollinators’*** Findings salvia stachydifolia was partially protandrous and self-compatible,but open-pollinated plants attained the highest reproductive success,suggesting that reproduction is mainly dependent on pollinator *** opifex bumblebees were the most frequent visitors,but Sappho sparganura hummingbirds dominated visits early in the morning and at *** was typical of bumblebee *** suggest that the bee–hummingbird mixed visitation constitutes an unstable evolutionary situation,making *** an ideal system to understand the ecological circumstances in which pollination shifts occur.

Identification of Alternariaspp. as Pathogenic on the Native Species Terminalia australisand salvia guaranitica

This work is the result of activities included in the cooperative project between Asociación Ribera Norte (ARN) and the Department of Plant Pathology, School of Agronomy, University of Buenos Aires. ARN is a non-governmental organization created in 1993 mainly for the management of the Reserva Ecológica Municipal Ribera Norte, a preservation area located in San Isidro (North of Buenos Aires), within the Provincia Paranaense region. The aims were to identify diseases in native plant species growing there. Light brown leaf spots with thin brown margins and narrow yellow halos were observed on Terminalia australis (mean disease severity: 25%). The pathogen was isolated, inoculated on healthy plants, reisolated from infected leaves and identified as Alternaria tenuissima. Similarly, another leaf-spot disease was observed on salvia guaranitica, characterized by reddish brown large spots developed from the apexes and margins towards the centre of the leaves, reaching the veins in some cases (mean severity: 20%). Pathogen isolation, inoculation and reisolation led to the identification of A. alternata as the causal agent of the disease. Unusual heavy rain is analyzed as disease conductive.
