Exploring speeding behavior using naturalistic car driving data from smartphones

The present research aimed to identify critical factors that affect speeding *** that purpose,high-resolution smartphone data collected from a naturalistic driving experiment of 88 drivers were utilized,augmented with data from self-reported *** risk exposure and driving behavior indicators calculated from smartphone sensor data,as well as demographic characteristics and self-reported driving performance,statistical analysis was carried out for modelling the percentage of driving time over the speed limit,namely by means of generalized linear mixed-effects *** precisely,an overall model was developed for all road environments,and additional separate models were developed for driving on urban and rural *** results from the interpretation of the estimated parameters of the models can be summarized as follows:the parameters of trip distance and mobile phone use while driving have been determined as statistically significant and positively correlated with the percentage of speeding time during a driver's *** the same context,male drivers and drivers in the age group of18-34 also increase the percentages of speeding instances while *** driving behavior as stated on the questionnaire,it seems that low frequencies of self-declared speeding(never or rarely)are statistically significant and negatively correlated with the percentage of speeding *** is expected that this research can provide considerable gains to society,since the stakeholders including policy makers and industry could rely on the results and recommendations regarding risk factors that appear to be critical for safe driving.

Vehicle automation holds significant opportunities in the efforts for safer road *** lower levels of automation like adaptive cruise control(ACC)systems have great *** from safety benefits,ACC systems could improve the efficiency of traffic ***,contemporary ACC systems are designed to be comfortable,but not guaranteed to be ***,according to recent literature studies,they have been found to be conservative and string unstable,with traffic oscillations being amplified when traveling *** to those issues,severe problems can arise in the traffic flow and the efficiency of road traffic networks may *** the vehicles’longitudinal movement through ADAS systems offers new opportunities in improving the safety conditions on the roads by designing more consistent *** the present paper,a fuzzy controller is developed for automated longitudinal vehicle *** controller is validated through simulation and real-world data of ACC systems that are currently available in the *** fuzzy surrogate safety metrics,the controller becomes aware of the safety level of any situation and can react ***,the driving behavior is efficient for the traffic flow,comfortable and string stable,dampening traffic shockwaves that travel *** prove the robustness of the proposed solution.

Use of Wehner-Schulze machine to evaluate pavement skid resistance:A review

Pavement skid resistance plays a crucial role in ensuring road safety and avoiding *** the past,the laboratory evaluation of the skid resistance was carried out by studying only the coarse aggregates of the wearing *** overcome this drawback,the Wehner-Schulze(WS)machine was developed in Germany in the *** equipment,composed of a polishing unit and a measuring unit,has great potential in predicting pavement skid resistance and its evolution over time,but is still little known in the pavement community(especially outside Europe).For these reasons,there is a need of a comprehensive review of the existing technical-scientific literature concerning the use of the WS ***,this paper focuses on the main factors affecting the skid resistance in WS tests,the correlation of WS data with other laboratory test methods and with field skid resistance/polishing,and the available prediction models that have been validated through WS *** critical analysis of the existing literature highlights that it is possible to correlate WS data with typical skid resistance field measurements as well as WS polishing with traffic polishing,but further efforts are needed in this *** work should focus especially on open-graded mixtures and innovative asphalt mixtures(e.g.,containing recycled materials and additives).From the perspective of pavement management,based on a theoretical background,the WS test results could be used as starting point for simplified prediction models of the in-situ skid resistance.

Methodology and evidence from a case study in Rome to increase pedestrian safety along home-to-school routes

Home-to-school routes are very sensitive areas: they represent, for children, a learning tool for their everyday activities, but if poorly designed, maintained and equipped they can expose them to traffic risks. Sidewalks' inappropriate level of service and poor maintenance, especially, are main factors contributing to walking unsuitability, thus to poor comfort and safety levels for young pedestrians, and more in general for all the vulnerable non-motorized road users. This paper deals with a methodology specifically developed to highlight the quality of the urban environment where the home-to-school routes are located, according to four main criteria: wellbeing, usage, appearance, and safety and security. Each criterion is associated with a checklist including the most relevant features to assess, with a focus on maintenance as a key parameter to create safe and comfortable routes to school. An application, a case study in Rome, where the lack of regular maintenance results into a network of unsafe sidewalks, is also presented, analyzing three different areas where a number of schools are located. Detours when approaching school premises were surveyed, due to the levels of distresses and linked to the poor comfort and safety levels. As the mutual influence of built environment over road safety and maintenance requirements for home-to-school paths is not largely investigated thus far, the paper's goal is to provide advanced knowledge for studies and applications further afield.

Deep Learning-Based Prediction of Traffic Accidents Risk for Internet of Vehicles

With the increasing number of vehicles,traffic accidents pose a great threat to human ***,aiming at reducing the occurrence of traffic accidents,this paper proposes an algorithm based on a deep convolutional neural network and a random forest to predict accident ***,the proposed algorithm includes a feature extractor and a feature classifier,where the former extracts key features using a convolutional neural network and the latter outputs a probability value of traffic accidents using a random forest with multiple decision trees,which indicates the degree of accident *** show that the proposed algorithm can achieve higher performance in terms of the Area Under the Curve(AUC)of the Receiver Characteristic Operator as well as accuracy than the existing algorithms based on the Adaboost or the pure convolutional neural networks.

Review and assessment of different perspectives of vehicle-pedestrian conflicts and crashes:Passive and active analysis approaches

The importance of investigating pedestrian safety has been evaluated repeatedly in safety *** present study attempts to evaluate the various methods used by previous researchers in a hierarchical process,to determine the characteristics,advantages,and limitations of each *** general analysis approaches(passive and active) were taken into account to categorize 169 previous types of *** the passive approach,the studied methods were those based on crash databases,questionnaires,and post-crash field observation data;while,in the active approach,the studied methods were those based on driving simulations and *** result of the passive approach reveals that road users’ features and road characteristics(crash database studies),and error,lapses,intentional and unintentional violations(questionnaire studies) by them were among the most important causes of crashes and ***,road users’ distractions also reported a set of factors affecting the possibility of conflicts and crashes based on postcrash field observation ***,results of the active approach showed that risky behaviors are the most important factor in threatening pedestrian safety such as unauthorized speeding,non-compliance with traffic law,unauthorized overtaking by drivers,and illegal ***,risk perception and decision-making processes are the mostimportant bond between the attitude and behavior of road users in dangerous driving *** studies through passive approach would lead to identifying the causes of crashes,recognizing the attitude of road users towards safety,and determining road users’ behavioral patterns in certain situations,while the active approach has led to a more detailed understanding of behaviors and attitudes of road *** inference of the findings obtained in this study will lead to a better understanding of the behavior of road users for studies on advanced driving assistance systems(ADAS).

Developing a multi-method approach to identifying e-scooter hazard hotspots

In recent years,e-scooters have been introduced in many European *** several places we have witnessed a rapid uptake of this new mode of transport mainly as a result of public sharing schemes.A number of incidents,injuries and even fatalities have given rise to questions regarding the safety of these *** questions are being researched mainly using official crash data and data specifying injuries and hospital *** now,the research has focused on investigating typical injury patterns and estimating risk *** little is known about exactly where conflicts and crashes *** of hazard hotspots is crucial when investigating risk levels and improving safety for all road ***,this paper develops an approach to investigating locations with potentially dangerous interactions within the active mobility system in the city of *** approach consists of explorative expert interviews,an online poll,and quantitative *** the latter we combine three ***,we research crash hotspots using official ***,we use data based on acceleration sensors from cyclists'smartphones to find locations of sudden ***,we use trip data from the operators of escooter sharing *** information gathered is used in a conclusive expert workshop to identify hazard *** show that many of the conflicts with pedestrians are caused by parked ***,e-scooter trips are concentrated in the inner city and along specific *** moving traffic,various data sources are used to identify hotspots at intersections and in areas between *** present research lays the foundation for important further studies to investigate interactions at hotspots in detail by determining nine specific locations in the city of Berlin.

Evaluating effectiveness and acceptance of advanced driving assistance systems using field operational test

A large number of reported road collisions are caused by driver inattention,and inappropriate driving *** study investigated the effectiveness and acceptance of Advanced Driving Assistance Systems(ADAS)for driver age groups,gender,occupation(professional/non-professional),and road type(expressway,urban roads,and semi-urban road)based on the Field Operational Test(FOT).The ADAS is provided with assistance features,such as Lane Departure Warning(LDW),Forward Collision Warning(FCW),and Traffic Speed Recognition Warning(TSRW).In total,the FOT involved 30 participants who drove the test vehicle twice(once in the stealth phase and once in the active phase).The FOT included three sections:expressway(20.60 km),urban road(7.2 km),and semi-urban road(13.35 km).A questionnaire was used to determine user acceptance of the ADAS *** addition,parametric and non-parametric statistical tests were carried out to determine ADAS's significant *** FOT results showed statistically significant differences in the LDW’s acceptance and effectiveness for gender,age group,occupation,and road type before and after exposure to *** participants showed significant lateral behavior improvement compared to female ***-aged drivers scored the highest acceptance score for the technology compared to middle and young-aged *** subjective ratings ranked the assistance features in descending order as TSRW,LDW,and *** study’s findings can support policy development and induce trust in the public for the technology adoption to improve road traffic safety.

Public perception of connected and automated vehicles:Benefits,concerns,and barriers from an Australian perspective
