Influence of Capping Ligands on the Self-organization of Gold Nanoparticles into Superlattices from CTAB reverse micelles

Gold nanoparticles with size 3-10 nm (diameter) were prepared by thereduction of HAuCl_4 in a CTAB/octane + 1-butanol/H_2O reverse micelle system using NaBH_4 as thereducing agent. The as-formed gold nanoparticle colloid was characterized by UV/vis absorptionspectrum and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Various capping ligands, such as alkyl-thiolswith different chain length and shape, trioctylphosphine (TOP), and pyridine are used to passivatethe gold nanoparticles for the purpose of self-organization into superstructures. It is shown thatthe ligands have a great influence on the self-organization of gold nanoparticles intosuper-lattices, and do-decanethiol C_(12)H_(25)SH is confirmed to be the best ligand for theserf-organization. Self-organization of C_(12)H_(25)SH-capped gold nanoparticles into 1D, 2D and 3Dsuperlattices has been observed on the carbon-coated copper grid by TEM without using any selectiveprecipitation process.

reverse micelles bring mild and effective microenvironments in organic solvent that contain bitmolecules, which have attracted immense attention for application in the isolation of proteins, protein refolding, and enzymatic reaction. In this review, the application of reverse micelles for protein separation and refolding has been briefly summarized and various reverse micellar systems composed of different surfactants, including ionic, non- ionic, mixed, and affinity-based reverse micelles, have been highlighted. It illustrates especially the potential application of the novel affinity-based reverse micelles consisting of biocompatible surfactant coupled with affinity ligands. Moreover, the importance to develop universal affinity-based reverse micelles for protein separation and refolding in the downstream processing of biotechnology has been pointed out.

Sub-100 nm hollow carbon nanospheres with thin shells are highly desirable anode materials for energy storage applications. However, their synthesis remains a great challenge with conventional strategies. In this work, we demonstrate that hollow carbon nanospheres of unprecedentedly small sizes （down to - 32.5 nm and with thickness of - 3.9 nm） can be produced on a large scale by a templating process in a unique reverse micelle system. reverse micelles enable a spatially confined Stober process that produces uniform silica nanospheres with significantly reduced sizes compared with those from a conventional Stober process, and a subsequent well-controlled sol-gel coating process with a resorcinol-formaldehyde resin on these silica nanospheres as a precursor of the hollow carbon nanospheres. Owing to the short diffusion length resulting from their hollow structure, as well as their small size and microporosity, these hollow carbon nanospheres show excellent capacity and cycling stability when used as anode materials for lithium/sodium-ion batteries.

A series of β-cyclodextrin-conjugated 4-arm poly（ethylene glycol）-poly（lactide-co-glycolide）（4-arm PEG-PLGA） copolymers were synthesized by a ring-opening polymerization of D,L-lactide and glycolide using 4-arm PEG as initiator, and then conjugated with mono（6-ethylenediamine-6-deoxy）- β-cyclodextrin （CDen） or ethylenediamino-bridged bis- β-CD （BCDen）. The chemical structures of copolymers were confirmed by IH-NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. The , β-CD-conjugated PEG-PLGA formed stable reverse micelles due to the formation of fl-CD and bovine serum albumin （BSA） inclusion complexation, which could accommodate BSA in the organic solvent with improved encapsulation efficiency. Moreover, we demonstrated a one-step approach to construct macroporous protein-containing films using these reverse micelles. The films with ordered pore arrays were directly prepared from reverse micelles. Interestingly, the protein was totally located in the whole matrix except for the pores.

The effects of postthermal treatment and irradiation time on the structure and thermal stability of TiO2/polyacrylate nanocomposites by a sol-gel process in reverse micelles and subsequent rapid photopolymerization were investigated, and the hybrid films were characterized by thermal gravimetry analysis （TGA）, X-ray photoelectron spectrum （XPS）, and atomic force microscopy （AFM）. XPS data suggested that the prolongation of irradiation time and the postthermal treatment promoted titania formation, with the former affecting more remarkably. TGA data showed that TiO2-hybrid films could upgrade the decomposition onset temperature （Tonset） as well as the temperature at which there is a maximum mass loss rate （Tmax）. AFM data demonstrated that the inorganic titania particles with a mean diameter of 25.26-28.84 nm were homogeneously distributed in the organic matrix.

Influence of norbornadiene and its derivatives on the photoluminescence (PL) of quantum-confined cadmium sulfide clusters (Q-CdS) prepared in reverse micelles wm investigated. It was found that norbornadiene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid (3) and its monopotassium salt (4) quenched PL intensity by 77% and 62%, respectively, whereas its dipotassium salt (a), norbornadiene (1) and norbornadiene-2,3-dimethylcarboxylate (2) had no effect on PL intensity. The formation constants for adducts formed between defect sites at the surface of Q-CdS clusters and 3 or 4 were also determined. PL quenching effect was attributed to the presence of ionizable proton which is considered to be able to trap photogenerated electrons and remove them from possible decay process. Measurements of the PL decay by single photon counting technique also supported these steady-state observations.
