Reduced homotopic interhemispheric connectivity in psychiatric disorders:evidence for both transdiagnostic and disorder specific features

There is considerable interest in the significance of structural and functional connections between the two brain hemispheres in terms of both normal function and in relation to psychiatric *** recent years,many studies have used voxel mirrored homotopic connectivity analysis of resting state data to investigate the importance of connectivity between homotopic regions in the brain hemispheres in a range of neuropsychiatric *** current review summarizes findings fromthese voxel mirrored homotopic connectivity studies in individuals with autism spectrum disorder,addiction,attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,anxiety and depression disorders,and schizophrenia,aswell as disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease,mild cognitive impairment,epilepsy,and ***,other than attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,studies across psychiatric disorders report decreased homotopic resting state functional connectivity in the default mode,attention,salience,sensorimotor,social cognition,visual recognition,primary visual processing,and reward networks,which are often associated with symptom severity and/or illness onset/*** homotopic resting state functional connectivity may therefore represent a transdiagnostic marker for general *** terms of disorder specificity,the extensive decreases in homotopic resting state functional connectivity in autism differ markedly from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder,despite both occurring during early childhood and showing extensive co-morbidity.A pattern of more posterior than anterior regions showing reductions in schizophrenia is also *** forward,more studies are needed to elucidate the functions of these homotopic functional connections in both health and disorder and focusing on associations with general psychopathology,and not only on disorder specific symptoms.

Objective The brain-gut axis, a bi-directional communication between the gut and the central nervous system(CNS) is based on the neural, endocrine and neuroimmune pathways. Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that is thought to involve a dysfunctional interaction between the brain and the gut, but the exact mechanism has not been fully clarified, and yet efficacious treatments have not been discovered that provide patients with satisfactory relief. Pinaverium bromide(PB) is a quaternary ammonium compound with a calcium-channel blocking property and is used for symptomatic relief in patients with IBS. The present study is to explore its role in the context of IBS. MethodsN eonatalmaternal separation(MS), isa preclinical model of early life stress,whichrodent pups were separated from the dam(3 hours/day) as a litter during postnatal days 2-21, the rat model of IBS caused by MS was established in this study. The behavioral response to colorectal distention(CRD) was assessed by measuring abdominal withdrawal reflex(AWR). Intracardiac blood samples were drawn for the measurement of serum concentrations of CORT, Ach, CGRP, SP, NO and TNF-α. The alteration of encephalic activated regions by using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging(fM RI,Bruker, 7.0 T), BOLD-Re Ho and PWI measurements were performed. Increases in BOLD activity correlated with increases in neuronal activity, making it possible to estimate the amount and anatomic location of brain activity that occurred during a particular pathological state. Results(1) MS rats develop visceral hyperalgesia in response to CRD, stress-induced increase in colonic motility and increased depression-and anxiety-like behaviors. The effects of MS on IBS-like symptoms of rat including visceral hypersensitivity andincreased fecal output were suppressed by PB treatment.(2) MS caused long-lasting changes in neuroendocrine and inflammation activation, and resulted in stress susceptibil

Deep involvement in negative affect is likely to result in heightened stress responses, emotion disturbance, and even emotional disorders. It is of implication for individuals to keep mood state in a stable level. An increasing number of evidences indicated that a bout of aerobic exercise as a typical laboratory paradigm brought about physiological and psychological benefits including self-esteem. However, the neural mechanism of aerobic exercise-induced self-esteem effect has remained largely unknown. The purpose of this study is to investigate such mechanism in functional connectivity approach. 55 eligible healthy young adults participants were recruited and randomly assigned into exercise group(n= 32) and control group(n=23) matched with age, sex and education level. Participants in exercise group were asked exercise with 30-minute moderate intensity exercise on cycle ergometer while Participants in control group were asked to reading paper for 30 minutes. After their arrival,all participants were instructed to complete abbreviated profile of mood scale(APOMS). fmri scanning was performed on all participants before and after exercise intervention/active control. Behavioral data were analyzed with linear mixed model and brain imaging data was analyzed with general linear model using ROI-to-ROI and seed-to-voxel approach. Additionally, independent component analysis(ICA) was adopted to further explore related rs-fmri change. The results didn’t show any significant change on self-report scores in domains of mood state, however, there was a marginally significantly improved self-esteem. The improved score of self-esteem was significantly correlated with the change of seed-to-voxel and voxel-to-voxel functional connectivity in caudate-vmPFC, caudate-OFC, the right MFG-cerebellum, as well as right amygdala-cerebellum.
