A geometric model of faulted detachment folding with pure shear and its application in the Tarim Basin, NW China

We present an improved geometric model of faulted detachment folding with pure shear that is characterized by core thickening and a ramp-discordant backlimb. The model includes a two-stage evolution： 1） detachment folding involving pure shear with fixed hinges, and 2） faulted detachment folding, in which the core of anticline thrusts above a break-through fault in forelimb by limb rotation. The growth strata patterns of the model are also discussed with respect to factors such as limb rotation, tectonic uplift rate, and sedimentation rate. A thrust-related fold, called a TBE thrust fold, in the Tarim Basin in NW China, is analyzed as an example of the theoretical model. The result indicates that the TBE thrust fold has undergone a two-stage evolution with shortening of a few hundred meters. Both the theoretical model and the actual example indicate that the shortening in the detachment folding stage takes up a large proportion of the total shortening. The structural restoration of the TBE thrust fold also provides new evidence that the formation of a series of thin-skinned structures in the SE Tarim Basin initiated in the Late Ordovician. The model may be applicable to low-amplitude faulted detachment folds.

The three stress components, equivalent to the principal stresses and independent of each other, have been obtained by means of reasonably resolving the stress tensor, with which the limiting state of materials are analyzed. A general formula of strength suitable for the isotropic materials has been derived and the problem of strength analysis finally solved.

The Early Mesozoic NE-SW Extensional Model and Exhumation Processes at the Southeastern Margin of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt:Insights from the Strain and Kinematic Vorticity Analysis of the Sonid Zuoqi Ductile Detachment Zone

The Sonid Zuoqi ductile detachment zone is located at the southeastern margin of the Central Asian orogenic belt(CAOB),striking EW and dipping to the *** major rock type of the Sonid Zuoqi ductile detachment zone is mylonite derived from *** sequence of mylonite features is:(1)S and C foliations of mylonite,and(2)extensional crenulation cleavage(ecc)or C′and the kinematic vorticity(Wk)value changed from 0.70 to 0.95 and from 0.37 to 0.69,respectively;the strain type of the mylonites within the Sonid Zuoqi ductile detachment zone is compressional to planar *** strong deformation mylonite and Halatu plutons yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 244 Ma and a zircon(U-Th)/He age of 214 Ma,*** on the strain and kinematic vorticity analysis,together with the zircon U-Pb and zircon(U-Th)/He ages and the regional tectonic background,the study area experienced three stage evolution:tangential simpleshear(244 Ma),simple-shear-dominated general shear represented by upper crustal extension(224 Ma)and pure-shear-dominated general shear represented by the Halatu pluton doming(214 Ma),which constrained the early Mesozoic NE-SW crustal extension at the southeastern margin of the *** NE-SW extension probably originated from the postorogenic extensional collapse of the CAOB,subsequent exhumation being controlled by the far afield effects of the closure of the Mongol-Okhotsk belt.

The coupled simple-shear/pure-shear model(CSSPSM)with broad application for studying the evolution of continental extensional sedimentary basins was proposed by Kusznir and co-workers. It can be used to determine the geometry of sedimentary basins and their crustal structure by integration of the rheological,thermal and isostatic response of lithosphere to various loads caused by lithosphere *** developed a MATLAB code,MODBAS,to model extensional sedimentary basin formation based on the *** validity of the code was tested with a single listric fault model and a multiple-fault *** application of the code in the Pearl River Mouth Basin(PRMB)on the northern margin of the South China Sea demonstrates(1)the effective elastic thickness of the lithosphere beneath the PRMB is very low(<5 km),which may support the idea of a very weak continental crust beneath the northern margin of the South China Sea;and(2)there are significant misfits between predicted and observed basements beneath the two high-standing areas on the profile, which was interpreted as an indication of substantial dynamic support from small-scale mantle convection.
