Locust is a common flying insect. Locust wings were used as biomimetic templates to fabricate multi-functional polymer（polydimethylsiloxane, PDMS） films by soft lithography. The microstructure and wettability of the natural and artificial locust wing surfaces were investigated by means of a scanning electron microscope（SEM） and a video-based contact angle meter. The natural locust wing surface exhibits complicated hierarchical structures and high adhesive superhydrophobicity（contact angle 152°）. The prepared polymer film faithfully reproduces the surface microstructures of the bio-template, and displays a good hydrophobicity and high adhesion（contact angle 144°）. The complex wettability of the natural and artificial locust wing surfaces ascribes to the cooperative effect of hydrophobic composition and multi-dimensional rough microstructures. This work not only promotes our understanding of the wetting mechanism on bio-surfaces, but offers an inexpensive and effective approach for biomimetic fabrication of multi-functional interfacial materials.

Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to investigate the dewetting behavior of a polymer thin film on partial wetting solid surface at the early stage of the dewetting process. Spontaneous dewetting is initiated by removing a band of strip from both the ends of the liquid polymer film which has achieved equilibrium. The solid-liquid interaction and temperature were varied to show their influence on the dewetting dynamics during dewetting as well as the shape evolution of the liquid polymer film. As is consistent with the results obtained in previous researches, the liquid film recedes at a constant speed initially with different solid-liquid couplings and tempe- ratures. Furthermore, smaller coupling parameters or higher temperatures tend to accelerate the recession speed of the liquid film and shorten the constant-speed recession duration. Obvious rims were not always observed. Both coupling parameter and temperature can influence the emergence of the rims.

Water-based polymer films can be readily deposited onto a wide range of metallic materials as an environmentally friendly coating through the demulsification-induced fast solidification(DIFS)***,there is still a lack of in-depth understanding of the demulsification process of the water-based emulsions and their deposition ***,we demonstrate that the build-up process of the commercial water-based micron-scale waterborne polyurethane,polyvinyl acetate,polyurethane acrylate,and natural rubber polymer films is affected by the collective effect of electric field and ion diffusion exerted by anode-cathode electrode pairs,applied voltage,conduction time,electrode distance,and emulsion species.A structural investigation of as-prepared polymer films allows us to propose two new structure build-up *** a flat film deposition,isolated islands are formed first and grow on the substrate surface,and eventually,their mutual coalescence forms the final ***,for a convex layer formation,the layer is first formed in the middle of the substrate and then grows toward the sides of the convex structure of the *** results presented in this work expand the understanding of the mechanism of the DIFS process and may provide some new insights into structure-oriented multifunctional material design.

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Dropwise Condensation of Steam on Vertical polymer Coated Plates

The plasma polymerization method and dynamic ion-beam mixed implantation method were employed to coat ultra-thin polymer films on copper plates. Experiments indicated that steady dropwise condensation of steam at atmospheric pressure occurred. The condensation heat transfer coefficients increased by approximately 3 and 5－7 times for the polytrimethylvinylsilane film and polytetrafluoroethylene film respectively, compared with the value for film condensation under the same experimental conditions. The temperatures on the condensing surface and inside the test block were found to be rapidly and randomly fluctuated. The properties of the coated films and advantages of the methods used in this investigation were discussed briefly.

This paper described the first example of polyamidoamine dendrimers ester(PAMAM) used as a gel electrolyte with a short-chain polyethylene glycol (MPEG-400) as aplasticizer. The polymer films are solid and sticky. Background cyclic voltammetry (CV) shows apotential window between +0.7 and -0.7 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The voltammetry of ferrocene and7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) indicates that diffusion coefficients are in the range of10^(-8) -10^(-9) cm^2/s. Ionic conductivities are approximately 10^(-6) S/cm. Similar films usingdimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a plasticizer instead of MPEG-400 have demonstrated ionicconductivities of 10^(-4) S/cm and reversible voltammetry. However, UV spectropho-tometry shows that70% of the DMSO is lost under vacuum, indicating the difficulty in quantifying the DMSO contentwhen exposed to vacuum.

SAW sensors using five different types of polymer to detect of chemical agents(DMMP,CH_3CN,CH_2Cl_2,DCP) have been fabricated and its gas response characteristics were extensively *** polymers used as the sensing material are polyisobutylene(PIB),polyepichlorohydrin(PECH),polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS),polyisoprene(PIP)and polybutadiene(PBD).Their thin films were coated on quartz substrate by spin coating *** types of simulants gases,dimethylmethylphosphonate(DMMP),acetonitrile(CH_3CN)and dichloromethane(CH_2Cl_2),dichloropentane(DCP)were used as target gases,instead of the real nerve,blood,choking and vesicant *** spin coating of PIB and PECH,the substrates were heated to 65℃with N_2 flow for 1 h to remove the cyclohexane and ethylacetate which was used as solvent. PDMS was heated to 75℃with N_2 flow for 2 h to remove the ethylacetate which was used as *** and PIP on the substrate were heated to 60℃with N_2 flow for 1 h to remove the benzen which was used as *** sensing characteristics of the SAW sensors were measured by using E-5061A network analyzer.

Excellent dropwise condensation of steam was observed on a polytethefluoroethylene (PTFE) coated plate. The experimental results indicated that the condensation heat transfer performance was increased by 30 to 47 times when compared with film condensation values at the same surface subcooling degrees. The random fluctuation of the surface temperature was resulted from the high thermal conductivity of the copper substrate and the ultra thin coated polymer film with lower surface free energy. The effect of the steam temperature for pressures near atmospheric pressure on the dropwise condensation heat transfer characteristics was investigated as well.
