COVID-19 has brought us an abnormal environment,which caused a great deal of inconvenience to every aspect of life,including academic interchange.In response to this,the operations Research Society of China(ORSC)organized an OR Road-to-Future Forum(运筹千里纵横论坛).As of April 30,2020,this series forum has held more than 100 talks from globally outstanding operational researchers,including the IFORS President Professor M.Grazia Speranza from University of Brescia(Italy),Professor Yin-Yu Ye from Stanford University(USA),Professor Zhi-Quan Luo from the Chinese University of Hong Kong(Shenzhen,China),and Professor De-Feng Sun from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University(Hong Kong,China).At the same time,OR Road-to-Future Forum also invites some outstanding junior speakers to share their latest works.These talks cover a wide range of areas in mathematical programming and operations research,such as graph theory,computational mathematics,bioinformatics,machine learning,artificial intelligence,engineering problems,as well as their applications.

Optical logic operations lie at the heart of optical computing,and they enable many applications such as ultrahighspeed information processing.However,the reported optical logic gates rely heavily on the precise control of input light signals,including their phase difference,polarization,and intensity and the size of the incident beams.Due to the complexity and difficulty in these precise controls,the two output optical logic states may suffer from an inherent instability and a low contrast ratio of intensity.Moreover,the miniaturization of optical logic gates becomes difficult if the extra bulky apparatus for these controls is considered.As such,it is desirable to get rid of these complicated controls and to achieve full logic functionality in a compact photonic system.Such a goal remains challenging.Here,we introduce a simple yet universal design strategy,capable of using plane waves as the incident signal,to perform optical logic operations via a diffractive neural network.Physically,the incident plane wave is first spatially encoded by a specific logic operation at the input layer and further decoded through the hidden layers,namely,a compound Huygens’metasurface.That is,the judiciously designed metasurface scatters the encoded light into one of two small designated areas at the output layer,which provides the information of output logic states.Importantly,after training of the diffractive neural network,all seven basic types of optical logic operations can be realized by the same metasurface.As a conceptual illustration,three logic operations(NOT,OR,and AND)are experimentally demonstrated at microwave frequencies.

Nonlinear oscillations in micro-and nanoelectromechanical systems have emerged as an exciting research area in recent years due to their promise in realizing low-power,scalable,and reconfigurable mechanical memory and logic devices.Here,we report ultralow-power mechanical memory operations utilizing the nonlinear oscillation regime of GaN microcantilevers with embedded piezotransistive AlGaN/GaN heterostructure field effect transistors as highly sensitive deflection transducers.Switching between the high and low oscillatory states of the nonlinear oscillation regime was demonstrated using a novel phase-controlled opto-mechanical excitation setup,utilizing a piezo actuator and a pulsed laser as the primary and secondary excitation sources,respectively.Laser-based photoacoustic excitation was amplified through plasmonic absorption in Au nanoparticles deposited on a transistor.Thus,the minimum switching energy required for reliable memory operations was reduced to less than a picojoule(pJ),which translates to one of the lowest ever reported,when normalized for mass.

Performing analog computations with metastructures is an emerging wave-based paradigm for solving mathematical problems.For such devices,one major challenge is their reconfigurability,especially without the need for a priori mathematical computations or computationally-intensive optimization.Their equation-solving capabilities are applied only to matrices with special spectral(eigenvalue)distribution.Here we report the theory and design of wave-based metastructures using tunable elements capable of solving integral/differential equations in a fully-reconfigurable fashion.We consider two architectures:the Miller architecture,which requires the singular-value decomposition,and an alternative intuitive direct-complex-matrix(DCM)architecture introduced here,which does not require a priori mathematical decomposition.As examples,we demonstrate,using system-level simulation tools,the solutions of integral and differential equations.We then expand the matrix inverting capabilities of both architectures toward evaluating the generalized Moore-Penrose matrix inversion.Therefore,we provide evidence that metadevices can implement generalized matrix inversions and act as the basis for the gradient descent method for solutions to a wide variety of problems.Finally,a general upper bound of the solution convergence time reveals the rich potential that such metadevices can offer for stationary iterative schemes.

This study considers a control problem related to the regulation of fractional-order systems controlled by fractional order proportional-integral-derivative controllers(PI^(λ)D^(μ)).The stability result of PIλDμ-based control systems is provided,such that the closed-loop systems can accomplish global stabilisation under some suitable conditions related to the system uncertainties.Finally,a simulation is demonstrated to verify the results.

This paper deals with a first-principle mathematical model that describes the electrostatic coalescer unitsdevoted to the separation of water from oil in water-in-oil emulsions, which are typical of the upstreamoperations in oil fields. The main phenomena governing the behavior of the electrostatic coalescer are denscribed, starting from fundamental laws. In addition, the gradual coalescence of the emulsion droplets isconsidered in the mathematical modeling in a dynamic fashion, as the phenomenon is identified as a keystep in the overall yield of the unit operation. The resulting differential system with boundary conditionsis then integrated via performing numerical libraries, and the simulation results confirm the available lit-erature and the industrial data. A sensitivity analysis is provided with respect to the main parameters. Themathematical model results in a flexible tool that is useful for the purposes of design, unit behavior predic-tion. performance rnoniroring, and ontimization.

operations research,popularly known as OR,is a scientific research method or mathematical technique for providing decision making aid in the management of large organizations or organized systems.In the real world,transportation,a large organized system,is the movement of humans,animals,and goods from one location to another.The transportation problem is significantly complicated because of its wide range.The modes of transportation include air,land(rail and road),water,cable,pipeline,and space.The field of transportation can also be divided into infrastructure,vehicles,and operations.Hence,transportation is essential for the development of civilizations,and has been an active topic for decades,while operations research is one of its key contents.This special issue examines the current progress,challenges and approaches in transportation through operations research.Thus,the scope of this issue covers high-quality original research focusing on the use of OR techniques(mathematical programming models,algorithms and simulation-based approaches,etc.)to deal with transportation problems.
