Effect of growth hormone-releasing peptide on cardiac cholinergic nerve fiber density distribution in a rat model of heart failure

BACKGROUND： Changes in the cardiac autonomic nerve are considered to be important factors in the mechanisms of heart failure. It is possible to reduce or slow down nerve degeneration and necrosis, provided that patients take effective neuroprotectants during the early stages of heart failure. Moreover, it is possible to relieve the pathological process and reduce the risk of death. OBJECTIVE： To study the effect of growth hormone releasing peptide （GHRP） on cardiac cholinergic nerve fiber density distribution in a rat model of heart failure, and verify whether GHRP can ameliorate denervation. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： A randomized controlled study was performed at the Key Laboratory of Anatomy, Harbin Medical University, between June and October 2009. MATERIALS： Fifty adult, healthy, female, Wistar rats, weighing （200± 20） g, were randomly divided into GHRP （n = 30）, model （n = 10）, and sham operation （n = 10） groups. GHRP-2 was made in Shanghai, China （batch No. z071212-03）. METHODS： Acute myocardial infarction was established by ligating the left anterior descending coronary artery in the GHRP and model groups. Five weeks later, myocardial function was detected using color ultrasound electrocardiograph a successful marker of chronic heart failure models Ejection fraction 〈 60% was considered to be However, the left anterior descending coronary artery was not ligated in the sham operation group. The GHRP group was injected with 100 μ g/kg GHRP-2, and the other two groups were injected with the same volume of physiological saline, once per day. Quantitative study of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and peripapillary vessel density in patients with different stages of Parkinson's disease

AIM: To observe the changes in the thickness of peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer(p RNFL) and peripapillary vessel density(pVD) in patients with different stages of Parkinson's disease(PD).METHODS: Totally 47 patients(47 eyes) with primary PD were divided into the mild group and the moderateto-severe group according to Hoehn & Yahr(H&Y) stage. Among them, there were 27 cases(27 eyes) in mild group and 20 cases(20 eyes) in moderate-to-severe group. And 20 cases(20 eyes) who were included in the control group were healthy people who came to our hospital for health screening at the same time. All participants underwent optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA) examinations. The pRNFL thickness, total vessel density(tVD) and capillary vessel density(cVD) of the optic disc in average, superior half, inferior half, superior nasal(SN), nasal superior(NS), nasal inferior(NI), inferior nasal(IN), inferior temporal(IT), temporal inferior(TI), temporal superior(TS), and superior temporal(ST) were measured. One-way ANOVA was used to compare the differences of optic disc parameters among the three groups, and Pearson and Spearman correlations were used to analyze the correlation between pRNFL, pVD and the disease duration, H&Y stage and UPDRS-Ⅲ score in patients with PD, ***: There were significant differences in p RNFL thickness in average, superior half, inferior half, SN, NS, IN, IT and ST quadrants among the three groups(P<0.05). In PD group, the pRNFL thickness in average, superior half, inferior half, NS and IT quadrants were negatively correlated with H&Y stage and UPDRS-Ⅲ score, respectively(P<0.05). There were statistically significant differences in the cVD of whole image, inferior half, NI and TS quadrants, the tVD of the whole image, inferior half, and peripapillary among the three groups(P<0.05). Anatomical feasibility of vagus nerve esophageal branch transfer to the phrenic nerve

This study measured the vagus and phrenic nerves from 12 adult cadavers. We found that the width and thickness of the vagus and phrenic nerves were different in the chest. The distance from the point of the vagus nerve and phrenic nerve on the plane of the inferior border of portal pulmonary arteries （T point） was approximately 7 cm to the diaphragm and was approximately 10 cm to the clavicle level. The number of motor fibers in the vagus nerves was 1 716 ± 362, and the number of nerve fibers was 4 473 ± 653. The number of motor fibers in the phrenic nerves ranged from 3 078 ± 684 to 4 794 ± 638, and the number of nerve fibers ranged from 3 437 ± 642 to 5 071 ± 723. No significant difference was found in the total number of nerve fibers. The results suggest that width, thickness, and total number of nerve fibers are similar between the vagus and phrenic nerves, but the number of motor fibers is different between them.

Imaging changes in neural circuits in patients with depression using 1 H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy and diffusion tensor imaging

1 H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging and diffusion tensor imaging were performed in 19 patients with mild depression and in 13 *** mean age of the patients was 31 *** mean Hamilton depression score of the patients was 22.5±13.2.N-acetylaspartate,choline and creatine concentrations and the average diffusion coefficient and fractional anisotropy values were measured in the bilateral hippocampus,striatum,thalamus and prefrontal deep white matter. Compared with the control group,the mild depressed patients had：（1）a higher choline/creatine ratio and a negative correlation between the choline/creatine ratio and the average diffusion coefficient in the hippocampus;（2）a lower choline/creatine ratio and a higher fractional anisotropy in the striatum;（3）a lower fractional anisotropy and a positive correlation between the fractional anisotropy and the choline/creatine ratio in the prefrontal deep white matter;and（4）a higher average diffusion coefficient and a positive correlation between the choline/creatine ratio and the N-acetylaspartate/creatine ratio in the thalamus,as well as positive correlation between the choline/creatine ratio and Hamilton depression *** data suggest evidence of abnormal connectivity in neurofibrotic microstructures and abnormal metabolic alterations in the limbic-cortical-striatal-pallidal-thalamic neural circuit in patients with mild depression.

Transplantation of neural stem cells, Schwann cells and olfactory ensheathing cells for spinal cord injury:A Web of Science-based literature analysis

OBJECTIVE： To identify global research trends in transplantation of neural stem cells, Schwann cells and olfactory ensheathing cells for spinal cord injury. DATA RETRIEVAL： We performed a bibliometric analysis of studies on transplantation of neural stem cells, Schwann cells and olfactory ensheathing cells for spinal cord injury published from 2002 to 2011 and retrieved from the Web of Science, using the key words spinal cord injury along with either neural stem cell, Schwann cell or olfactory ensheathing cell. SELECTION CRITERIA： Inclusion criteria：（a） peer-reviewed published articles on neural stem cells, Schwann cells or olfactory ensheathing cells for spinal cord injury indexed in the Web of Science; （b） original research articles, reviews, meeting abstracts, proceedings papers, book chapters, editorial materials and news items; and （c） published between 2002 and 2011. Exclusion criteria：（a） articles that required manual searching or telephone access; （b） documents that were not published in the public domain; and （c） corrected papers. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES：（1）Annual publication output, distribution by journal, distribution by institution and top-cited articles on neural stem cells; （2） annual publication output, distribution by journal, distribution by institution and top-cited articles on Schwann cells; （3） annual publication output, distribution by journal, distribution by institution and top-cited articles on olfactory ensheathing cells. RESULTS： This analysis, based on articles indexed in the Web of Science, identified several research trends among studies published over the past 10 years in transplantation of neural stem cells, Schwann cells and olfactory ensheathing cells for spinal cord injury. Diffusion tensor imaging and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy in brain tumor Correlation between structure and metabolism

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy and diffusion tensor imaging are non-invasive techniques used to detect metabolites and water diffusion in vivo. Previous studies have confirmed a positive correlation of individual fractional anisotropy values with N-acetylaspartate/creatine and N-acetylaspartate/choline ratios in tumors, edema, and normal white matter. This study divided the brain parenchyma into tumor, pedtumoral edema, and normal-appearing white matter according to MRI data, and analyzed the correlation of metabolites with water molecular diffusion. Results demonstrated that in normal-appearing white matter, N-acetylaspartate/creatine ratios were positively correlated with fractional anisotropy values, negatively correlated with radial diffusivities, and positively correlated with maximum eigenvalues. Maximum eigenvalues and radial diffusivities in peritumoral edema showed a negative correlation with choline, N-acetylaspartate, and creatine. Radial diffusivities in tumor demonstrated a negative correlation with choline. These data suggest that the relationship between metabolism and structure is markedly changed from normal white matter to peritumoral edema and tumor. Neural metabolism in the peritumoral edema area decreased with expanding extracellular space. The normal relationship of neural function and microstructure disappeared in the tumor region.
