Studies of movement mechanisms have been carried out in Urumqi Glacier No. 1 for years Four mechanisms have been identified. They are ice deformation, bed deformation, shear faulting and sliding over the bed. The creep experiment on polycrystalline ice with impurities and the observation in ice tunnels excavated at the glacier base show that a definite store of impurities is able to significantly increase the deformation of bed composed of ice-laden debris at the temperature between - 1℃ and the melting point The subpolar-type glaciers in China, on the basis of these studies, might be distinguished into three modes whose movement mechanisms differ from each other to a degree according to their scale and the location of the O’C isotherm.

Considering the characteristics of the time and space scales of the eddies we established a qua-si-static and quasi-geostrophic model to describe their variation and movement in shelf slope water. The analytical solution revealed the main properties of the variation: slow expansion and faststagnation processes and the law of the eddy motion affected under the background field. All theo-retical results are proved by satellite image measurements.

We obtain a unified horizontal velocity field of continental China and vicinity through measurements at 81 GPS stations provided by the National Key Infrastructure Project, Crustal movement Observation Network of China. The velocity field delineates patterns of movements and deformation of active crustal blocks in continental China under the Eurasia-fixed reference frame. The space-based geodesy also clearly shows for the first time the horizontal movementand deformation of continental China induced by indentation of the Indian plate. The data provide kinematic constraints for simulating dynamic process of continental litho-spheric deformation.

In animal cells, action of acetylcholine depends on its binding with its two specific receptors on the plasma membrane: the nicotinic and muscarinic respectively. The present investigation has shown that agonists of muscarinic receptor (muscarine) could induce stomatal opening, while the antagonists (atropine) could block stomatal opening induced by acetylcholine. Their effects can only be realized in medium containing Ca2+, but not in medium containing K+. The results tend to reveal that the muscarinic receptor is involved in acetylcholine-induced stomatal movement.

This paper summarizes the first movement and mass centre of stratum-block movement inertia in the Earth multi-body system and introduces its application. It also elaborates the moment of inertia and the products of inertia: the inertia dyadic transformation of reference system and the parallel axis theorem of stratum-block movement inertia of the Earth multi-body system. It provides an academic foundation for research on the dynamic model of Earth multi-body system.

During the May Fourth New Cultural movement,three debates on new/Western and old/Chinese cultures were respectively carried out between the journal New Youth and Lin Qinnan,Chen Duxiu and Du Yaquan,as well as Zhang Dongsun and Fu Sinian.New Youth,Chen Duxiu and Zhang Dongsun were regarded as the“new school,”whereas their opponents“the old new--intellectuals.”The difference between them lies in their attitudes towards traditions instead of their new or old knowledge.After three heated debates,New Youth won a total victory in big cities,because the so-called“urban youths”needed a radical cultural reform plan and a simple guide for action.On the contrary,“town youths”who lived in small cities and towns did not care about the attitudinal difference of two sides.They paid more attention to absorbing new knowledge from both sides and were more sympathetic to tradition.

Continental China has moved dextral Eastward since Cenozoic time,driven by the collision of the Indian with the Eurasian plate.Evidence for this comes from landscape evolution,the distribution of earthquake epicenters,Cenozoic sedimentary and volcanic rocks,and the measurement of GPS velocity vectors,the distribntion of crustal stress,paleomagnetic data,and deep mantle structure,among others.This movement commenced around 40 Ma,coupled with thickened lithosphere and widespread stress release along strikeslip faults that bound the continental Chinese block.Because of continued Northward subduction of the Indian plate,manifestation of the dextral movement has intensified since 25 Ma.Far-reaching effects include extensive strike-slip movement on the Tan-Lu fault in Eastern China,formation of the Dabie ultrahigh pressure metamorphic terrane,extensive thrust faults in East China,delamination and thickening of the lithosphere of South China,a possible tectonic doubling of the Middle-Lower Yangtze Valley metallogenic belt,and the formation of the Japan,Huanghai (East China),and South China Sea.

Injury is common in nature resulting,for example,from fighting,partial predation,or the wear of body parts.Injury is costly,expressed in impaired performance,failure in competition,and a shorter life span.A survey of the literature revealed the frequent occurrence of injury in ants and its various causes.We examined whether leg or antenna injury impacts food-discovery time and reduces the likelihood of reaching food in workers of the desert ant Cataglyphis niger.We examined the search-related consequences of injury in groups of either 4 or 8 workers searching for food in a short arena,a long arena,and a maze.We conducted a small field survey to evaluate the prevalence of injury in the studied population.Finally,we compared the survival rates of injured versus uninjured workers in the laboratory.Injury was common in the field,with almost 9%of the workers collected out of the nest,found to be injured.Injured workers survived shorter than uninjured ones and there was a positive link between injury severity and survival.However,we could not detect an effect of injury on any of the searching-related response variables,neither in the arenas nor in the mazes tested.We suggest that workers that survive such injury are only moderately affected by it.
