High contrast amplification at 1053 nm limited by pulse stretching-compressing process

We report on our high-contrast laser based on high-contrast, high-energy seed injection, low-gain optical para- metric chirped pulse amplification （OPCPA）, and Nd：glass amplifiers, which can be used as the high-contrast front end of a high-power Nd：glass chirped pulse amplification （CPA） laser system. The energy of the stretched 1053 nm high-contrast seed pulse increases to 60 DJ by optimizing the frequency doubling crystal in the pulse cleaning device. After passing through a two-stage low-gain OPCPA, a 2-pass 2-rod Nd：glass amplifier, and a compressor the amplified pulse of 131 mJ/282 fs is achieved. The third-order correlation scanning measurement shows that the pulse contrast in the tens of ps range is about 10^-7-10^-8. With the high-contrast seed passing through the stretcher and compressor only, the contrast measurement indicates that the stretching-compressing process leads mainly to the contrast degradation of the amplified pulse.

We demonstrate the rotating properties of Bragg reflections and spatial lattice solitons in rotating photonic lattices by analyzing the linear and nonlinear propagations of light. It reveals that the Bragg reflection of the light waves rotates synchronously with the lattices, leading to the rotation of the Bloch waves during propagations. In the presence of nonlinearity, rotating lattice solitons from different transmission bands can propagate in a relatively stable manner. However, reduced-symmetry solitons at point X2 cannot easily rotate synchronously with the lattice, owing to Coriolis forces. Moreover, additional angular momenta are added to the off-axis propagating solitons.

We propose a method for simultaneous 3D temperature and velocity measurement of a micro-flow field. The 3D temperature field is characterized with two-color laser-induced fluorescence particles which are tracked with micro-digital holographic particle tracking velocimetry. A diffraction-based model is applied to analyze defo- cused particles to determine the intensity ratio of two fluorescent dyes on the particle. The model is validated with experimental images. As the result shows that the intensity ratio nearly remains unchanged with respect to depth positions, defocused particles can be used as 3D temperature sensors. Numerical work is carried out to check the method, and 3D temperature and velocity field in a 120 μm × 120 μm× 80 μm test volume are retrieved.

Based on the calculation formulas of heat treatment temperature field for an arbitrary incident laser intensity distribution, the transformation intensity distribution of CO2 laser beam passing an integrating mirror is studied theoretically and experimentally. The derived formulas are applied in laser heat treatment research which is transformed by optical system, and the theoretical calculation results are compared with experimental results. It is shown that the formulas can be used to calculate the laser heat treatment temperature field accurately, and the calculation speed is obviously faster than the numerical calculation methods with the same precision. The calculation software can be used to select proper experiment parameters.

A flash-lamp-pumped Nd：YAG regenerative amplifier has been developed at 1.06 μm, seeded with 10- ps pulses from a diode-end-pumped and mode-locked Nd：YAG oscillator with homemade semiconductor saturable absorber mirror （SESAM）. The pulse energy was amplified to 2 mJ by the regenerative amplifier at 10-Hz repetition rate. In two-stages amplifier the regenerative amplified pulse energy was amplified to 100 m J, and 35-mJ double frequency at 532 nm was obtained by extra-cavity double frequency with a KTP crystal.

Micro-lens arrays were adopted to homogenize the beam profile of 532-nm pumping laser for the main amplifier of an intense femtosecond, chirped pulse amplification （CPA） Ti：sapphire laser. Experimental measurements showed a great improvement of the near-field pattern of the CPA beam after the main amplifier and the size of the focal spot was improved from 2.7 times diffraction limitation （DL） to 1.6 DL. The spot size focused by an f/4 off-axis parabola （OAP） in the target chamber was measured to be 5.8 pm （full-width at half-maximum （FWHM））, and a peak intensity of 2.6 × 10^20 W/cm^2 was obtained at the output power of 120 TW. Peak intensity exceeding 10^21 W/cm^2 or even 10^22 W/cm^2 can be expected with smaller f-number focusing configuration and wavefront correction.

A design and testing of a cost-effective distributed optical remote sensing methane system, which will help one to detect gas leaks from multi-coal face in mines simultaneously, is presented. The fundamentals of the remote detection are based on frequency-modulation spectroscopy (FMS) and harmonic detection. By utilizing fiber-optic splitting technique and reference-signal restoring circuit, the remote sensing system is feasible to employ single laser source to get multi-spot measurement in the near infrared region so that the system described here shows sufficient sensibility, considerably increased reliability and marketability over the presently available system. The minimum measurable path-integrated concentration is estimated to be about 423 ppb-m by experimentation.
