The aim of this study was to investigate antibacterial activity of Origanum compactum essential oils collected at three phenological stages on Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. The antibacterial activity was evaluated using the agar-well diffusion assay. The MIC and MBC values were determined using the micro-dilution assay. The investigation of the antibacterial action was carried out by the evaluation of the effect of O. compactum essential oils on the antibacterial kinetic growth, the integrity of cell membrane and permeability of the cell membrane. The anti-quorum sensing activity was tested by the inhibition of the biofilm formation. The findings of this study showed that O. compactum essential oil has potent antibacterial activities against E. coli and B. subtilis. The lowest inhibition value against B. subtilis was obtained with O. compactum essential oil at the post-flowering stage (MIC=MBC=0.0312%(v/v)). The antibacterial mechanisms of O. compactum essential oils are related to the disturbing of the cell membrane integrity and the increasing of the membrane permeability, which leads to the leakage of genetic materials (DNA and RNA). Moreover, O. compactum essential oils inhibited the formation of the biofilms, a phenotype that has been known to be quorum sensing regulated.

As total life expectancy increases, the prevalence of age-related diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer's disease is also increasing. Many hypotheses about Alzheimer's disease have been developed, including cholinergic neuron damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Acetylcholine is a major neurotransmitter in the brain and cholinergic deficits leads to cognitive dysfunction and decline. Recent studies have linked diabetes as a risk factor in developing Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. The incidence of patients with type II diabetes and increased levels and activity of α-amylase is higher in patients with dementia. It has been shown that aromatherapy with essential oils from the mint family can improve cognitive performance in Alzheimer's disease patients. Selected monoterpenoids from these essential oils are reported to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, both in vitro and in vivo. Terpenoids are small, fat-soluble organic molecules that can transfer across nasal mucosa if inhaled, or penetrate through the skin after topical application, enter into the blood and cross the blood-brain barrier. Recent evidence supports the idea that the common constituents of essential oils also inhibit α-amylase, a starch digestive enzyme that plays an important role in the control of diabetes. The mint family is a fragrant plant family that contains most of the culinary herbs found in the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet is considered to be one of the healthiest diets in the world, and is found to be beneficial not only for the heart but also for the brain. Herbs used in this diet are rich in antioxidants that can prevent oxidative damage caused by free radicals. However, our study shows that they also contain biologically active compounds with potent α-amylase and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities. Consumption of fresh herbs can help boost memory and reduce sugar levels in the body. The use of herbs as a functional food could lead to significant improvements in health. The effects of essential oil from Carpesium abrotanoides L.(CAEO)on the proliferation and apoptosis of human hepatic cancer cells were investigated in this study.MTT assays indicated that CAEO inhibited the proliferation of HCC cells with the IC50 values ranging from 41.28±3.06 to 130.36±20.79μg/mL.Moreover,many obviously nuclear morphological changes of apoptotic cells in CAEO-treated HepG2 cells were detected by Hoechst 33258staining and fluorescence microscopy.Flow cytometry was used to detect cell apoptosis and cell cycle,and noticeable findings showed that CAEO arrested cell-cycle at S and G2/M phases.The decreased Bcl-2/Bax protein ratio and the activation of caspase-3,caspase-9 were also detected by Western blotting.All results suggested that CAEO is a potential agent to fight against liver cancer,and the mitochondria-mediated intrinsic apoptotic pathway could be involved in CAEO-mediated apoptosis of human liver carcinoma cells.

essential competencies for three grades of midwives in China

Objective:To identify the essential competencies for different grades of midwives in China.Methods:A nationwide modified Delphi process was implemented to amend and screen the indicators.Thirty expert panellists including practitioners (nurse-midwives),clinical managers,academic educators and obstetricians completed a two-round Delphi study through an electronic survey that was supplemented by an expert panel meeting for discussion of comments and suggestions.Results:All panellists completed two rounds of Delphi study and at least 75% of them achieved a consensus on 224 items (W1 =0.150,W2 =0.173).Seven domains were established,namely,'Professional quality','Antenatal care','Intrapartum care','Postnatal care','Neonatal care','Gynaecological care','Public health care & Integrative competency'.Generalised maternal and neonatal knowledge and perinatal care skills were set for'junior'midwives,pathological care for'senior'ones and supervisory abilities and promotion of discipline for'expert'ones.Conclusions:This research developed three grades of essential competencies for midwives in China.The next step will be assessment in clinical settings for further response.The set was in line with the concepts of International Confederation of Midwives under the domestic context.This set could be adopted as a reference in developing normalised midwifery practice,education and certification.

Effect of essential Oil on Patients with Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of essential oil treatment for type Ⅲ chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome(CP/CPPS). Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted from December 2014 to October 2015. Seventy type Ⅲ CP/CPPS patients were assigned to the essential oil group(35 cases) or almond placebo oil control group(35 cases) by a random number table. The oil was smeared by self-massage on the suprapubic and sacral region once a day for 4 weeks. The National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Syndrome Index(NIH-CPSI) and expressed prostatic secretions(EPS) were examined. The primary outcome was NIH-CPSI pain domain. The secondary outcomes included other NIH-CPSI domains and laboratory examinations of EPS. Adverse events were also observed. Results: Sixty-six subjects completed the full 4-week treatment. There was no significant difference between almond oil control and essential oil groups in terms of the total score of NIH-CPSI, pain, quality of life and urination domain scores of NIH-CPSI and EPS examinations(P>0.05). In the essential oil group, pain between rectum and testicles(perineum) in the domain of pain or discomfort was significantly reduced at week 2 and week 4 compared with almond oil control group(Pessential oil may reduce the pain or discomfort in the perineum region in patients with CP/CPPS.

NetEPD: A Network-Based essential Protein Discovery Platform

Proteins drive virtually all cellular-level processes.The proteins that are critical to cell proliferation and survival are defined as essential.These essential proteins are implicated in key metabolic and regulatory networks,and are important in the context of rational drug design efforts.The computational identification of the essential proteins benefits from the proliferation of publicly available protein interaction datasets.Scientists have developed several algorithms that use these interaction datasets to predict essential proteins.However,a comprehensive web platform that facilitates the analysis and prediction of essential proteins is missing.In this study,we design,implement,and release Net EPD:a network-based essential protein discovery platform.This resource integrates data on Protein–Protein Interaction(PPI)networks,gene expression,subcellular localization,and a native set of essential proteins.It also computes a variety of node centrality measures,evaluates the predictions of essential proteins,and visualizes PPI networks.This comprehensive platform functions by implementing four activities,which include the collection of datasets,computation of centrality measures,evaluation,and visualization.The results produced by Net EPD are visualized on its website,and sent to a user-provided email,and they are available to download in a parsable format.This platform is freely available at http://***/netepd.

Impact of essential oils and organic acids on the growth performance,digestive functions and immunity of broiler chickens

The aim of the experiment was to study the effects of feeding blends of sorbic acid, fumaric acid, and thymol(EOA) on growth performance, digestive functions, and immunity of broiler chickens. A total of 640 one-day-old male Cobb 500 chicks with similar BW(41.8 ± 0.6 g) were randomly divided into 4dietary treatment groups consisting of 10 replicates with 16 birds per replicate and fed a basal diet until d 42(CON) or diets with 0.15 g/kg enramycin during the grower period(AG), 0.30 g/kg EOA during the grower period(EG), or 0.30 g/kg EOA during the finisher period(EF). At d 42, the feed conversion ratio was reduced(P < 0.05) for birds in EG group compared with other groups. Birds in EG group showed a higher villus height of the duodenum and jejunum and muscular layers of the duodenum and ileum than birds in CON group(P < 0.05). Compared with other groups, crypt depth of the jejunum and ileum was markedly increased(P < 0.05) by EOA supplementation during the finisher period at d 42. The EOA supplementation during grower period increased significantly lipase, trypsin and chymotrypsin activities of the duodenum at d 21 and 42, as well as lipase and trypsin at d 21, and trypsin and chymotrypsin at d 42 in the jejunum, and trypsin and chymotrypsin activities of the ileum at d 21 compared to the control diet(P < 0.05). Birds of EG and EF groups showed a higher(P < 0.05) spleen index than birds of CON group. The level of secretory immunoglobulin A in duodenal and ileal mucosa was increased(P < 0.05) in EF group at d 42 compared with other groups. In conclusion, the results indicate that EOA can be effectively applied in broiler diets, especially during the grower phase by improving intestinal morphology and increasing digestive enzyme activity.

Dear Editor,The dentate gyrus(DG),a subregion of the hippocampus,is involved in multiple physiological functions such as cognition and mood regulation.Dentate granule cells(DGCs),the primary neurons in the DG,are essential for coding spatial and contextual memories in the hippocampal neural circuits.The entorhinal cortex provides a majority of cortical projections to the DG via the perforant path,and forms synaptic connections with DGCs within the outer two-thirds of the molecular layer of the DG[1].The plasticity of the perforant path-to-DGC synapses strengthens the connections of ensembles encoding spatial,contextual,or temporal information,and promotes the recall of related memories when certain perforant path inputs are reactivated[2].

essential oils from Elaeoselinum asclepium: Chemical composition, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties

Objective: To evaluate the chemical composition of the essential oil isolated from Elaeoselinum asclepium(L.) Bertol.(E. asclepium), and test the efficiency of the essential oil as an antimicrobial and antioxidant agent.Methods: essential oil was obtained from the aerial parts of E. asclepium by hydro distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. We study for the first time the chemical composition of the essential oil of E. asclepium, followed by the in vitro antimicrobial activities, which were evaluated by agar diffusion method against six Gram-positive bacteria, five Gram-negative bacteria, and two fungi. In addition, The antioxidant activities were also investigated using assays of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity and ferricreducing capacity.Results: The analyzed essential oil of the aerial parts of E. asclepium was rich in apinene(43.9%), other compounds detected in appreciable amounts were sabinene(27.9%) and b-pinene(16.0%). The essential oil yields 1.2%, the IC50 values of essential oil in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl assay in the reducing power assay were 48.26 mg/m L and at 1 mg/m L, respectively. The absorbance value of essential oil at 700 nm was0.956. The antimicrobial effect was higher on Candida albicans ATCC 1024 strain with the inhibition zone 14.5 mm than bacteria and molds.Conclusions: The essential oil of E. asclepium has antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. These species may be used as an important source of natural antimicrobial and antioxidant agents.

Ionic liquids ( ILs) based ultrasonic-assisted extract has been applied for the extraction of essential oil from Persicaria minor leaves. The effects of temperature,sonication time,and particle size of the plant material on the yield of essential oil were investigated. Among the different ILs employed,1-ethyl-3-methyli midazolium acetate was the most effective,providing a 9. 55% yield of the essential oil under optimum conditions( 70 ℃,25 min,IL ∶hexane ratio of 7 ∶10 ( v /v) ,particle size 60-80 mesh) . The performance of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate in the extraction was attributed to its lowviscosity and ability to disintegrate the structural matrix of the plant material. The ability of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate was also confirmed using the conductor like-screening model for realistic solvents. This research proves that ILs can be used to extract essential oils from lignocellulosic biomass.
