“They Are Not Mixing With Others”:Finnish Lecturers’Perspectives on International Students’(Mis-)encounters in Higher Education

Purpose:Meeting“others,”especially so-called“local”students,is usually seen as a sign of success for intercultural learning and integration in research on study abroad and internationalization of higher *** studies have focused on how international students themselves describe their(mis-)*** this article,the authors consider lecturers’voices about this *** have an influence on the students’experiences since they spend a lot of time together in and outside ***/Approach/Methods:Using a thematic analysis and social network analysis of interview data with lecturers,and a critical perspective toward the dichotomy of“local”versus“international”students,a university in Finland,a popular destination thanks to its positive image in global education,serves as a case ***:The article identifies privileges,limits,and(missed)opportunities of encounters,as shared by the lecturers in focus group ***,the lecturers created hierarchies in the way they described the encounters between different kinds of *** signs of pluralizing both local and international students were also found in some lecturers’***/Value:The article ends with recommendations for institutions regarding the lecturers’problematic role of gatekeepers in student encounters and the limiting categories used in institutions of higher education to refer to students.

Fidelity and Sacrifice: The Gender Discourse of Traders in Pre- and Post-Opium War Canton

This article examines the discourse of two American couples in the China trade regarding fidelity and sacrifice during the period in which the spatial confines of the Canton system gave way to the intensified interactions of the Treaty Port *** the Opium War,when the Qing court had mandated that Western husbands conducting business in Canton live apart from their wives,marital tension was accentuated by the separation from absentee *** the subsequent Treaty Port era,enhanced spatial mobility of the couples did not assuage their ***,intensified cross-cultural encounters allowed them to project their feelings and expectations on the foreign other,'as racial categories developed and their imperial proclivities began to *** the Western women in contact with elite Chinese and other Western women only aggravated their agitation as they faced their Chinese counterparts,whom they readily construed as *** socio-political and spatial reconfigurations provided new dimensions to the discourse of fidelity and *** voices of the American couples recorded here are those of individuals,but the underlying anxiety they articulated represented the growing pains of more intimate Sino-Western encounters.

The(Pictorial)Construction of Collective Identities in the Third Reich

Collective identities of the Self vs. the Other are not only conveyed in and between cultures through verbal discourse, but also through pictures. Cultural encounters are often comprehended by storytelling, the verbal expression of which has been abundantly studied. Pictorial manifestations of narration, however, have received comparatively less attention. Mostly, narration has been associated with verbal discourses, where, briefl y put, events or situations are temporally ordered. Even though the narrative capacity of pictures has been taken for granted by e.g. art historians, attempts to elucidate the semiotic and cognitive basis of visual narrativity, esp. in static pictures, have been relatively rare(cf. Ranta, 2013).Within cognitive science, narratives are regarded as crucial and fundamental cognitive instruments or tools(e. g. Bruner, 1990; Schank, 1995). As Roger Schank suggests, the identity of(sub-) cultures is to a considerable extent based upon the sharing of narrative structures. According to Schank, culturally shared stories—or stories in general—occur frequently in highly abbreviated form, as "skeleton stories" or "gists", not least in pictorial form. Moreover, in ways that correspond to Schank's account of storytelling and cognition, these may also have implications for conceptions of one's home-culture in relation to an alien-culture. Many pictures and visual artworks have indeed been produced in order to consolidate, modify, and demarcate certain cultural *** this paper, I shall focus upon one(and even today highly relevant) example of creating cultural identity, namely the racist confrontation of the "Aryans" vs. the Other(esp. Jews, but also Slavs and Romani) as promoted by National Socialist thinking and politics during the Third Reich in German history. Some concrete pictorial examples indicating these attempts will be discussed and analysed from a narratological and cognitive semiotic perspective.
