Hydrogen sulfide(H2S)is a gasotransmitter that acts as an antioxidant and exhibits a wide variety of cytoprotective and physiological functions in age-associated *** of the major causes of age-related diseases is oxidative *** recent years,the importance of H2S has become clear,although its antioxidant function has not yet been fully *** enzymes cystathionineβ-synthase,cystathionineγ-lya-se,and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase are involved in the enzymatic production of ***,H2S was considered a neuromodulator,given its role in long-term hippocampal potentiation,but it is now also recognized as an antioxidant in age-related *** to aerobic metabolism,the central nervous system is vulnerable to oxidative stress in brain aging,resulting in age-associated degenerative diseases.H2S exerts its antioxidant effect by limiting free radical reactions through the activation of antioxidant enzymes,including superoxide dismutase,catalase,and glutathione peroxidase,which protect against the effects of aging by regulating apoptosis-related genes,including p53,Bax,and *** review explores the implications and mechanisms of H2S as an antioxidant in age-associated neurodegenerative diseases,including Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease,Huntington’s disease,and Down syndrome.

＜正＞Hydrogen sulfide（H2S） has been shown to play a protective role in injury of cells induced by *** previous work showed that H2S could be involved in the central control of rhythmic respiration（Neuroscience 156:1074-1082,2008）.Little is known however about its effects on medullary hypoxia-induced rhythmic respiratory *** medullary slices of neonatal rats （P0-4） were perfused with artificial cerebrospinal fluid bubbled with 95%O2-5%CO2 and the frequency and integrated amplitude of the burst discharge of the hypoglossal rootlets of slices were *** the present study,a decrease in frequency of rhythmic discharge of hypoglossal rootlets was observed in medullary slices of neonatal rats perfused with 95%N2-5%CO2 to produce hypoxia. Perfusion with NaHS（H2S donor） or L-cysteine（Cys）,substrate of cystathionineβ-synthase（CBS, H2S synthase） could both increase the burst frequency of hypoglossal rootlets and prevent the respiratory suppression caused by hypoxia（P＜0.05 and P＜0.01 respectively）,whereas such action of NaHS was blocked by pretreatment with glibenclamide,a blocker of KATP channels（P＜0.05）.Perfusion with hydroxylamine（NH2OH,inhibitor of CBS） could decrease the burst frequency and postpone recovery of respiration from hypoxic inhibition（P＜0.05）.No significant changes were observed in the integrated burst amplitude of the hypoglossal rootlets of the slices in all groups（P＞0.05）. Hypoxia could increase malondialdehyde（MDA） content of the medullary slices of neonatal rats （P＜0.01） and the increase could be antagonized significantly by NaHS（P＜0.05） but enhanced further by NH2OH in MDA content of the slices（P＜0.05）. In addition,Real-time RT-PCR results indicated that hypoxia could increase c-fos mRNA expression（P＜0.01） and the hypoxia-induced upregulation of c-fos mRNA could be markedly antagonized by NaHS and S-adenosyl-L-methionine（SAM,activator of CBS）,but greatly increased by NH2OH（P＜0.05）.Neither hypoxia,NaHS,NH2OH,Cys nor SAM had any effe
