Language Discrimination and critical pedagogy in ESL Education

This paper explores language discrimination and discusses the possible critical pedagogy in language education against discrimination. The paper talks about language discrimination consisting of three stages. The first one is institutional discrimination. The second stage is group discrimination. And the last one is individual discrimination. Then it moves to the analysis of critical pedagogy in ESL education. In the end the paper tries to discuss the possibility of anti-language discrimination education.

This paper is a cross-cultural comparative study in education philosophy.A comparative and philosophical approach is used to interpret texts from the Analects of Confucius and to find connections with ideas of critical *** comparing Confucius’educational thought with that of Paulo Freire,John Dewey and other theorists in critical pedagogy,this paper finds four common threads between Confucian concepts of education and critical pedagogy:mutual learning,integration of theory and practice,importance of reflection in teaching and learning,and democratic purpose of *** presenting these interwoven themes,this paper contributes to a cross-cultural dialogue on global understanding in education.

This article explores the dynamics of power-sharing between teacher and students in learning and teaching situations,and describes the theoretical bases,implementation,and results of an empirical study in three elementary schools in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of *** from 58 class observations and interviews with 50 students,25 teachers,and three school principals suggest that teachers can empower students by acknowledging their right to and responsibility for learning and by sharing power with ***-sharing classroom practice requires the dual efforts of teachers and students,and can be facilitated by the teachers’interactive teaching mode,students’cooperation and willingness to engage in learning,and school policy and culture,*** the power-sharing classrooms,teachers played the role of facilitators and students played as *** this article,theoretical implications for understanding power-sharing and critical pedagogy are *** empirical evidence from this Hong Kong study contributes to an understanding of teacher-initiated power-sharing in the Chinese context,and the practice of critical pedagogy in classrooms.

英美流派批判教育学出现解放教育学、非改革主义者的改革、边界教育学、革命的批判教育学、务实的批判教育学、转化教育学、批判生态教育学、三棱镜式批判教育学等不同形态。其形态尽管各不相同，但也有共通之处。英美流派批判教育学以启蒙和解放为旨趣，通过霸权意识批判、建立厚民主对话、构想教育即解放，追求从被压迫者的非人性化到自由的解放，把人类从各种压迫、异化与贬抑中解放出来，并致力于建立一个确保人的解放的社会。然而它仍然存在陷入批判性话语的困境，缺乏可能性的意义；陷入晦涩空泛，缺乏可操作性；陷入霸权叙述，缺乏差异共享；注重社会正义，忽视生态正义；注重学究偏向，忽视实践取向的理论等局限。

促进社会正义是批判教育学对高等教育的预期与承诺，它将高等教育看作是公共空间和公共利益。它认为学科是封闭的、限定性的、精英主义指向性的，阻碍了高等教育社会正义的追求与实现，因此批判教育学将跨学科或交叉学科作为高等教育追求和实现社会正义的必然选择。当前，一些西方学者却认为，批判教育学者的学科观缺乏长远的历史的视角，因而是不正确的，还有被新自由主义利用的可能。在他们看来，学科实际上也是复杂的、可渗透性的，并是论争性的空间。重新认识学科的这一本质和特性，有利于抵抗当前高等教育的商业化、商品化趋势。知识的获取始终具有促进人类共同利益的伦理性。学科与跨学科是相互依存的，对高等教育实现社会正义同样具有正当性。

激进政治经济学已经走过了50余年的历程，鲍尔斯凭借其独特的理论创新能力在激进政治经济学者中脱颖而出，他所开辟的“没有劳动价值论的马克思主义经济学”代表了激进政治经济学的主流范式。基于鲍尔斯从1975到2020年间发表的所有与马克思主义经济学相关的论文，可以将鲍尔斯对马克思主义经济学理论的发展划分为三个阶段：“1975至1981年的转型期”“1982至1989年的理论成型期”和“1990年至今的理论拓展期”，勾勒了鲍尔斯的学术思想轨迹。本文的研究发现：鲍尔斯对劳动价值论的“放弃”与其在20世纪90年代的行为科学转向在研究路径上并没有发生断裂，而是其政治经济学理论体系发展的必然结果。把鲍尔斯的学术历程看作是一个连续谱系，是理解鲍尔斯及其代表的美国激进政治经济学理论进展的关键。

马克思有鉴于社会阶级的不均等权力关系是导致结构化社会冲突的主因，从而力倡社会正义的实践哲学。由于这种观点对社会不公平提供令人信服的解释，因而形成马克思主义，并导引出许多重要的教育社会学理论。惯习论、编码理论与批判教育学是其中的经典理论，虽然这些理论采取马克思主义路线，但惯习论与编码理论侧重课程知识结构属性的剖析，批判教育学则关注课程内容的意识形态。这些理论的影响力并非单纯取决于马克思主义，还取决于社会情境。因为伴随社会发展，教育不公平并未有明显的改善，这种关联性显示出，社会情境属性在很大程度上影响理论的意义。
