Self-healable gels in electrochemical energy storage devices

In the green energy and carbon-neutral technology,electrochemical energy storage devices have received continuously increasing attention recently.However,due to the unavoidable volume expansion/shrinkage of key materials or irreversible mechanical damages during application,the stability of energy storage and delivery as well as the lifetime of these devices are severely shortened,leading to serious performance degradation or even safety issues.Therefore,the utilization of self-healable gels into electrochemical energy storage devices,such as electrodes,binders,and electrolytes,is proven as an effective method to realize long-term stable operation of these devices via the self-repairing of mechanical and electrochemical characteristics.Herein,this review first summarizes the feature and fabrication of different gels,paying special attention to hydrogels,organohydrogels,and ionogels.Then,basic concepts and figure of merit of self-healable gels are analyzed with a detailed discussion at the healing mechanisms,from reversible dynamic bonds to physical molecular diffusion,and to external healing trigger.Then we introduce all the important parts of electrochemical energy storage devices,which could be replaced by healable gels to enhance the durability,including electrodes,binders,and electrolytes.Finally,the critical challenges and future perspectives regarding the future development of healable gels based high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices or electronics are provided.

The development of high-performance binders is a simple but effective approach to address the rapid capacity decay of high-capacity anodes caused by large volume change upon lithiation/delithiation.Herein,we demonstrate a unique organic/inorganic hybrid binder system that enables an efficient in situ crosslinking of aqueous binders(e.g.,sodium alginate(SA)and carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC))by reacting with an inorganic crosslinker(sodium metaborate hydrate(SMH))upon vacuum drying.The resultant 3D interconnected networks endow the binders with strong adhesion and outstanding self-healing capability,which effectively improve the electrode integrity by preventing fracturing and exfoliation during cycling and facilitate Li^(+)ion transfer.SiO anodes fabricated from the commercial microsized powders with the SA/0.2SMH binder maintain 1470 mAh g^(-1)of specific capacity at 100 mA g^(-1)after 200 cycles,which is 5 times higher than that fabricated with SA binder alone(293 mAh g^(-1)).Nearly,no capacity loss was observed over 500 cycles when limiting discharge capacity at 1500 mAh g^(-1).The new binders also dramatically improved the performance of Fe_(2)O_(3),Fe_(3)O_(4),NiO,and Si electrodes,indicating the excellent applicability.This finding represents a novel strategy in developing high-performance aqueous binders and improves the prospect of using high-capacity anode materials in Li-ion batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)are the most important electrochemical energy storage devices due to their high energy den-sity,long cycle life,and low cost.During the past decades,many review papers outlining the advantages of state-of-the-art LIBs have been published,and extensive efforts have been devoted to improving their specific energy density and cycle life performance.These papers are primarily focused on the design and development of various advanced cathode and anode electrode materials,with less attention given to the other important components of the battery.The“nonelectroconductive”components are of equal importance to electrode active materials and can significantly affect the performance of LIBs.They could directly impact the capacity,safety,charging time,and cycle life of batteries and thus affect their commercial application.This review summarizes the recent progress in the development of nonaqueous electrolytes,binders,and separa-tors for LIBs and discusses their impact on the battery performance.In addition,the challenges and perspectives for future development of LIBs are discussed,and new avenues for state-of-the-art LIBs to reach their full potential for a wide range of practical applications are outlined.

Tungsten carbide coatings with different binders prepared by low power plasma spray system

Thermal spraying of cermet coatings is widely used for protection of machining parts against wear and corrosion. These coatings consist of WC particles in metal binders such as Co, Cr and Ni. Three kinds of WC powders with different metal binders (Co, NiCr and CoCr) were sprayed by low power plasma spray system on Al-Si-Cu alloy substrate. Fundamental aspects of sprayed cermet coatings, including (i) the effects of binder type on the coating structure, (ii) the hardness and (iii) the microstructure, were investigated. All cermet coatings have the same phase structure such as WC and W2 C. However, the intensities of these phases are different in each coating, mainly due to the difference in solidification rate in each case. Moreover, the hardness measurements are found to be different in each coating. The results show that, binder type has a significant effect on the physical and mechanical properties of the sprayed coatings.

Shear resistance properties of TPS modified bitumen binders and asphalt mixtures

Shear resistance properties of the virgin bitumen and modified bitumen binders with Tafpack Super(TPS) modifier and SBS modified bitumen were discussed.Dynamic shear rheometer(DSR) was used to measure the laboratory creep data for these binders over a wide range of constant shear stresses at 20 ℃ to characterize the shear creep behaviors of all kinds of asphalt binders,and the rutting test system was used to investigate the permanent deformation of porous asphalt mixtures using the above bitumen binders for a fixed compressive stress.The shear strain rate and shear creep modulus were used to characterize the shear creep behavior of the TPS modified bitumen,and the rutting test results were used to show the consistency of porous asphalt mixtures with the bitumen binders.Results indicate that a distinction of shear creep strain can be made among different contents of TPS modified bitumen at the same stress level,where the shear creep strain-time response curve of the SBS modified bitumen binder is between the curves of the 8% TPS and 12% TPS modified bitumen binders.The shear strain rate and the shear creep modulus of the TPS modified bitumen binders are obtained to compare with those of the SBS modified bitumen binder which results in the same trend as the shear creep strain-time response curve.Permanent deformation results of all the porous asphalt mixtures from the rutting test show reasonable agreement with the findings of the shear strain rates and shear creep modulus over the range of shear stress levels.

Influence of conductive additive on temperature susceptibility of asphalt binders

The effects of graphite on temperature susceptibility of asphalt binders were investigated by penetration test,Ring & Ball softening point test and viscosity test.And penetration index(IP),viscosity-temperature susceptibility(SVT),and penetration-viscosity numbers(NPV) were introduced to evaluate the effects.The results show that the penetration,softening point and viscosity of asphalt binder increase with the increase of content of graphite.This means that the addition of graphite makes asphalts stiffer.The results from IP,NPV and SVT show that temperature susceptibility is reduced by the addition of graphite.

Preparation of Anhydrate Phosphogypsum binders

In this work,phosphogypsum(PG) with a small amount of lime was thermally pretreated at 450 ℃ to produce anhydrate gypsum for the purpose of searching new ways for utilization of waste PG. Additives,K2SO4 and one selected seed crystal(SC),were used as activator for anhydrate PG. The hydration characteristics of the anhydrate PG binders were investigated by determination of the setting time,the ratio of hydrated anhydrate PG,the compressive strength development,and the microstructure of the hardenite. The resistance to water was studied by measuring mass loss of binders exposed to hydrodynamic water. Results suggest that activated by K2SO4 and SC,anhydrate PG hydrates much more rapidly than that without additives. The anhydrate PG binder with K2SO4 and SC has proper setting time and good strength developments. SEM photos show that the set binders have hydrated products of rodlike and regularly shaped crystals. Those crystals connected closely,and the hardenite has a compact structure,which is beneficial to the obtainment of good properties.

Polyimides as Promising Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries:A Review

Lithium-ion batteries(LIBs)have helped revolutionize the modern world and are now advancing the alternative energy field.Several technical challenges are associated with LIBs,such as increasing their energy density,improving their safety,and prolonging their lifespan.Pressed by these issues,researchers are striving to find effective solutions and new materials for next-generation LIBs.Polymers play a more and more important role in satisfying the ever-increasing requirements for LIBs.Polyimides(PIs),a special functional polymer,possess unparalleled advantages,such as excellent mechanical strength,extremely high thermal stability,and excellent chemical inertness;they are a promising material for LIBs.Herein,we discuss the current applications of PIs in LIBs,including coatings,separators,binders,solid-state polymer electrolytes,and active storage materials,to improve high-voltage performance,safety,cyclability,flexibility,and sustainability.Existing technical challenges are described,and strategies for solving current issues are proposed.Finally,potential directions for implementing PIs in LIBs are outlined.

Hybrid materials collected from organic and inorganic sources,which are traditionally used as brake lining materials,generally include fly ash,cashew shell powder,phenolic resins,aluminium wool,barites,lime powder,carbon powder and copper powder.The present research focuses on the specific effects produced by fly ash and aims to provide useful indications for the replacement of asbestos due to the health hazards caused by the related fibers.Furthermore,the financial implications related to the use of large-volume use of fly ash,lime stone and cashew shell powder,readily available in most countries in the world,are also discussed.It is shown that many manufacturing and automotive industries,which are currently experiencing difficulties in meeting the increasing demand for brake lining material,may take advantage from the proposed solution.

Micrometre-sized electroactive particles with high tapping density show significant potential for commercial application since they effectively alleviate low Coulombic efficiency and excessive solid electrolyte interphase(SEI)issues brought by nanostructures.Furthermore,optimizing the electrode architecture using novel design concepts can improve the energy density.Beyond the electrode material structure design strategy,binder plays a vital role in providing the mechanical stability and regulating the charge transport.This highlight presents the latest development to design high-capacity batteries by optimizing the binder structures in electrodes and emphasizes the significance of binder design for further commercial application.
