On Strengthening Chinese College Students’audience awareness to Improve Their Persuasive Writing Ability

Persuasive or argumentative writing,which focuses on the reader and seeks to change the reader’s mind,or to bring the reader’s point of view to the writer’s,is the most prominent and practical academic writing and is also the most complex and most *** achieve the persuasive purpose,audience is a key element to *** unfortunately,many Chinese college students have no sense of audience at ***,although some researchers have mentioned in their books or papers the important role the audience plays in persuasive writing,so far few writing books or papers have made a relatively comprehensive and systematic study and exploration of how to strengthen Chinese college students’audience ***,this paper,which is intended to elaborate on it,first gives a definition to audience awareness,then analyzes the influence audience awareness exerts on persuasive writing,and finally proposes a few feasible and effective methods to strengthen Chinese college students’audience awareness.

本文以中国共产党对外传播的受众意识为切入点，在厘清受众意识概念的基础上，重点阐释百年来中国共产党对外传播受众意识演进的动态轨迹，并考察了其受众意识不断深化的深层动因，最后结合百年对外传播受众意识演进过程归纳出经验性策略。百年来，中国共产党对外传播受众意识从初步确立到不断强化，其深层动因为党的“群众路线”的一贯坚持、“统一战线”思想的始终践行以及党的历史使命变迁及与时代、环境变化的共振互动。回顾中国共产党百年对外传播实践，国际受众观业已形成，但在实践中运用不足。未来需继续坚持以受众意识为核心，明确受众主体地位，建立完善的受众研究体系，选择并善用能够影响更多国际受众的“第一圈层”受众。

Approaching the audience:engagement markers in Longinus'On the Sublime

Metadiscourse is a significant method in revealing audience awareness,but related studies have been confined to linguistic markers and current writing *** essay aims to enrich metadiscourse engagement in particular with certain rhetorical figures and to investigate audience awareness in a highly acclaimed Roman-era Greek classic:Longinus'On the *** from a refined framework of engagement,we find explicit evidence of audience aware-ness as manifested in the author's use of engagement *** have sorted these markers into four types,including reader mentions(apostrophe and pro-nouns),directives(modal verbs and imperatives),questions(erotema and rogatio),and appeals to shared knowledge(emphasizers and comment clauses).We sug-gest that the frequent use of these engagement markers,in particular reader mentions,could be taken as evidence of the author's strong audience awareness and the cueing effect in facilitating *** integration of rhetorical fig-ures into the metadiscourse engagement markers contributes to the audience awareness analysis in a more explicit and comprehensive way.

In today's global community, the ability to write effectively in a second / foreign language is becoming widely recognized as a key skill for individuals from different cultures to communicate successfully. According to contrastive rhetoric researches, culture exerts influence on written discourse and culturally unique rhetorical conventions of students' L1 writing transfer to their ESL / EFL *** thesis reports a cross-cultural study carried out to explore similarities and differences at the comparable level of discourse organization between Chinese and English writing. The subjects of this study consisted of two groups, providing data for, respectively, quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis. The quantitative data are 96 educational consulting and reply emails/e-messages between universities in China's mainland and U.K. and native Chinese students/graduates who want to study for a Master's degree in those universities. The qualitative data are obtained from the questionnaire survey and interviews. The 279 (valid) participants were native Chinese speakers, among which, 197 were second-year students in Zhejiang Universities, and 82 were overseas students studying for a Master' degree in a variety of U.K. *** results show that Chinese discourse exhibits some unique organizational patterns, however, these features were not preferred by native Chinese people. Instead, the results reveal that with the growing trend of globalizations Chinese discourse tends to show more similarities than differences with the English one at the organizational level. Such cross-cultural similarities in rhetoric may result in positive bi-transfer. Therefore, the findings of this study indicate that culturally unique features may not be prevalent, and that predominantly preferred patterns may be shared by different languages, and the dynamic language system may receive influence from other linguistic systems with which frequent contact has been made.
