The Taxonomic History and Original Literatures arrangements of Living <i>Cephalotaxus</i>(Cephalotaxaceae)

Living Cephalotaxus (plum yews) occurs mainly in East Asia and North of Indo-China peninsula. The study of original taxonomic literatures found that, in early days, the plum yews had ever been described as palnts of Taxus (Taxaceae). Since after the genus name Cephalotaxus Sieb. & Zucc. was firstly cited (from inedited and unpublished Flora Japonica) by Endlicher in 1842, most taxonomist thought which is the earliest time of the genus Cephalotaxus Sieb. & Zucc. was set. However, the genus Cephalotaxus Sieb. & Zucc. was formally effective and valid published by Sieb. & Zucc. in Flora Japonica in 1870 so that there exists some confusions in chronological order. Originally as a genus, Cephalotaxus was included in family Taxaceae and Neger (1907) separated Cephalotaxus from Taxaceae and set family Cephalotaxaceae. Later, Fu (1984) divided Cephalotaxus up into two sections of Cephalotaxus Sieb. & Zucc. sect. Pectinatae L. K. Fu and Cephalotaxus Sieb. & Zucc. sect. Cephalotaxus L. K. Fu on the bases of C. oliveri Masters differ significantly from other taxa of Cephalotaxus in morphological characteristics. Although the plum yews was a little genus of conifers, up to now, about 77 taxa have still been published by taxonomist in different countries or regions. Among them, C. tardiva Sieb. ex Endl. (1847), C. umbraculifera Sieb. ex Endl. (1847), C. sumatrana Miq. (1856) and C. celebica Warb. (1900) have been combined to Taxus, and C. argotaenia (Hance) Pilger (1903) has been combined to Amentotaxus. And at the same time, those taxa existing in Cephalotaxus courently which were accepted by most taxonomist in different countries was also cited in acticle. Lastly, the paper thought presently there still exists many debates about binary classification of Cephalotaxus and the nomenclature of this genus still particularly confusing. Based on some controversial problems, we also point out some taxonomically researching directions at creating some order out of the chaos.

Based on the Hertzian granular contact mechanics model, the paper built up a Macroscopic Young’s Elastic Modulus of particle/granular packing rock layers, and built up a ties to connecting Young’s Elastic Modulus of sand particle in Meso and the Macroscopic Young’s Modulus of granular packing rock layers. The Macroscopic Young’s Modulus of granular packing rock layers is far less than the Young’s Modulus of sand particle. The Macroscopic Young’s Modulus of granular packing rock layers is proportioned to the powers of 1/3 of the vertical contact force of sand particles. The Macroscopic Young’s Modulus is inversely proportional to particle diameter. The paper calculated the vertical contact force of five types aligning mode of the particles. When equal stress, the increased of the coordination number lead to the decrease of the contact force fn, this lead to the coordination number is an inverse proportion to Macroscopic Young’s Modulus. But the larger coordination number change only means very little Macroscopic Young’s Modulus change.

The rationale of this work is based on recent evidences suggesting that: 1) both qualitative and quantitative β-lactoglobulin (β-LG) polymorphism may be found in bovine milk;2) quantitative polymorphisms are often the result of expression gradients in multiple copies of a gene;3) the β-LG gene is duplicated in the dog and bovine genome;4) mammary genes are highly conserved across Mammalia. Thus, an investigation was conducted on ovine β-LG polymorphism checking phenotypic evidence for copy-number variants of β-LG in sheep. To the purpose, 206 milk samples were collected, during a small-scale survey within sheep farms breeding Southern Italian breeds. PAGIF screening of the samples revealed that approximately 50% individuals exhibited β-LG polymorphism and 4 different quantitative patterns, which were characterized in detail by a proteomic approach relying on combined chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques. The expected figures based on the expression gradient models were compared with well-established α-globin gene arrangements in sheep. The different phenotypes suggest the presence of both duplicate and triplicate BLG haplotypes. The occurrence of a triplicate haplotype was supported by population data. The current study supports the helpfulness of up-to-date proteomics for inferring copy number polymorphisms through the characterization of the phenotypic expression.

Improved Approximation of Layout Problems on Random Graphs

Inspired by previous work of Diaz, Petit, Serna, and Trevisan (Approximating layout problems on random graphs, Discrete Mathematics, 235, 2001, 245-253), we show that several well-known graph layout problems are approximable to within a factor arbitrarily close to 1 of the optimal with high probability for random graphs drawn from an Erdös-Renyi distribution with appropriate sparsity conditions using only elementary probabilistic analysis. Moreover, we show that the same results hold for the analogous problems on directed acyclic graphs.
