Prevalence of depression and anxiety among children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes:a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background Evaluation of psychiatric disorders in children is essential in timely treatment.Despite individual studies,there is no information on the exact status of psychiatric disorders in children.The present study was conducted to determine the prevalence of depression among children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.Methods This meta-analysis is registered with PROSPERO(CRD42021231491).Several databases(Web of Science,Scopus,and PubMed)were searched from January 1,2000 to December 15,2020.The key words included:depression,anxiety,children,and diabetes.The steps of search,comprising screening,risk of bias,and extraction of study data,were performed separately by two researchers.Results It was found that a total of 109 studies had been conducted involving 52,493 children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.These studies were included in the present review study.The prevalence of depression,anxiety among children with type 1 diabetes were 22.2%[95%confidence interval(CI)19.2–25.2],and 17.7%(95%CI 15.2–20.1),respectively.The prevalence of depression was higher among girls(29.7%)than boys(19.7%).The prevalence of depression was higher in lower-middle-income countries at 29.3%(95%CI 18.6–40.0).The prevalence of depression among children with type 2 diabetes was 22.7%(95%CI 17.3–28.0).Conclusion The results of the present study indicate the importance of paying attention to extensive periodic screening and appropriate activities to reduce pediatric depression.

Listening to music during arteriovenous fistula surgery alleviates anxiety: A randomized single-blind clinical trial

BACKGROUND Both end-stage renal disease and being wait-listed for a kidney transplant are anxiety-causing situations.Wait-listed patients usually require arteriovenous fistula surgery for dialysis access.This procedure is performed under local anesthesia.We investigated the effects of music on the anxiety,perceived pain and satisfaction levels of patients who underwent fistula surgery.AIM To investigate the effect of music therapy on anxiety levels and perceived pain of patients undergoing fistula surgery.METHODS Patients who were on a waiting list for kidney transplants and scheduled for fistula surgery were randomized to control and music groups.The music group patients listened to music throughout the fistula surgery.The State-Trait anxiety Inventory was performed to assess anxiety,additionally visual analog scale was used to evaluate perceived pain,willingness to repeat the procedure and patient satisfaction.Demographic features,comorbidities,surgical history,basic surgical data(location of fistula creation,duration of surgery,incision length)and intraoperative hemodynamic parameters were recorded by an investigator blinded to the study group.An additional trait anxiety assessment was performed following the surgery.RESULTS There was a total of 55 patients included in the study.However,14 patients did not fulfill the criteria due to requirement of sedation during surgery or uncompleted questionnaires.The remaining 41 patients were included in the analysis.There were 26 males and 15 females.The control and music groups consisted of 20 and 21 patients,respectively.With regard to basic surgical and demographic data,there was no difference between the groups.Overall patient satisfaction was significantly higher and intra-operative heart rate and blood pressure were significantly lower in the music group(Panxiety levels were significantly lower in the music group.CONCLUSION Music therapy can be a complimentary treatment for patients undergoing fistula surgery.It can reduce anxiety and pe

Prevalence of depression and anxiety and associated factors among geriatric orthopedic trauma inpatients:A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND Common mental disorders such as anxiety and depression in geriatric orthopedic trauma patients have received little attention in research.AIM To investigate the prevalence of emotional disorders among geriatric orthopedic trauma patients and identify demographic,social and clinical risk factors.METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed in geriatric patients(aged≥60 years,both sexes)with orthopedic trauma admitted to a level I trauma center between May 2015 and December 2017.Demographic,social,and clinical characteristics were described.Huaxi Emotional-Distress Index(HEI)was used to evaluate the severity of anxiety and depression status.Differences in continuous variables were tested using the t-test,and differences in categorical variables were assessed using the Pearsonχ2 test.Binary logistic regression analyses were used to identify the factors associated with a HEI score>8.RESULTS Among the 966 patients,487 were male and 479 were female,with a mean age of 70.2±7.1 years.The age ranged from 60 to 90 years.Seventy-five patients had an HEI score>8,accounting for about 7.8%of all patients.A higher Injury Severity Score(4.17±3.10 vs 7.96±6.68,P8.On logistic regression,a higher education level was a protective factor for emotional disorders(P=0.047),whereas Injury Severity Score(P=0.024),Visual Analog Score(Panxiety and depression in higher risk groups.

Objective:To evaluate the differences in the clinical effect and the safety in the treatment of post-stroke anxiety disorder(PSAD)between electroacupuncture(EA)and paroxetine on the base of the heart-brain theory.Methods:A total of 70 patients of PSAD were randomized into an EA group and a medication group,35 cases in each one.In the EA group,four acupoints were selected and divided into two pairs.In the Pair A,there were Baihui(百会GV20)and Fengfu(风府GV16).In the Pair B,there were Xinshu(心俞BL15)and Shenmen(神门HT7).After acupuncture,the electroacupuncture apparatus was applied.The duration of needle retention was 20 min.EA was given three times a week,totally for 4 weeks.In the medication group,paroxetine tablets were administered orally,10 mg daily in the first 4 days and 20 mg afterwards,totally for 4 weeks.Before and after treatment,as well as in the follow-up period,Hamilton anxiety scale(HAMA),Barthel index(BI)for daily life ability,and clinical global impression(CGI)were observed and the clinical therapeutic effect was evaluated separately.Results:A total of 3 cases were dropped-out in the medication group.Finally,35 cases in the EA group and 32 cases in the medication group were included in the analysis.Compared with the scores before treatment,the scores of HAMA and CGI-SI(severity of illness)were lower and the scores of BI were higher after treatment and during the follow-up in either the EA group or the medication group(all P0.05).Compared with the medication group,BI score in the EA group was higher in the follow-up,indicating the statistical significance(P<0.05).After treatment,CGI-SI score was different statistically between the EA group and the medication group(P<0.05).There were 5 cases with adverse reactions in the EA group and 9 cases in the medication group.Conclusions:The therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture on th

Buspirone along with melatonin attenuates oxidative damage and anxiety-like behavior in a mouse model of immobilization stress

AIM: Stress is recognized to precipitate anxiety and related psychological problems characterized by a wide range of biochemical and behavioral changes. The present study was carried out to investigate the protective effects of melatonin and buspirone, and their combination, against six hours immobilization stress-induced, anxiety-like behavioral and oxidative damage in mice. METHOD: Male Laca mice were pre-treated with melatonin(2.5, 5 mg·kg–1), buspirone(5, 10 mg·kg–1), and their combination for consecutive five days. On the 6th day, animals were immobilized for six hours, and thereafter various behavioral tests were performed followed by biochemical tests. RESULTS: Immobilization stress significantly impaired body weight, locomotor activity, and caused anxiety-like behavior, along with increased oxidative damage. Pretreatment with melatonin and buspirone significantly improved the loss in body weight and locomotor activity, attenuated anxiety-like behavior(in both the mirror chamber and plus maze performance tasks), further restored the levels of brain total proteins, and caused antioxidant-like effects, as evidenced by reduced lipid peroxidation, nitrite concentration, and restoration of reduced glutathione and catalase activity, as compared to control animals. In addition, combination of melatonin(2.5, 5 mg·kg–1) with buspirone(5 mg·kg–1) significantly potentiated their protective effects, as compared to their effects individually. CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that melatonin potentiates the beneficial effect of buspirone against immobilization stress-induced, anxiety-like behavioral and oxidative damage in mice possibly by involving a serotonergic mechanism.

Effects of Wen Dan Tang on insomnia-related anxiety and levels of the brain-gut peptide Ghrelin

Ghrelin, a brain-gut peptide that induces anxiety and other abnormal emotions, contributes to the effects of insomnia on emotional behavior. In contrast, the traditional Chinese Medi- cine remedy Wen Dan Tang reduces insomnia-related anxiety, which may perhaps correspond to changes in the brain-gut axis. This suggests a possible relationship between Wen Dan Tan^s pharmacological mechanism and the brain-gut axis. Based on this hypothesis, a sleep-deprived rat model was induced and Wen Dan Tang was administered using oral gavage during model es- tablishment. Wen Dan Tang significantly reduced insomnia-related anxiety and prevented Ghrelin level decreases following sleep deprivation, especially in the hypothalamus. Increased expression of Ghrelin receptor mRNA in the hypothalamus was also observed, suggesting that reduced anxi- ety may be a result of Wen Dan Tan＇s regulation of Ghrelin-Ghrelin receptors.

Effects of the aqueous extract of Schizandra chinensis fruit on ethanol withdrawal-induced anxiety in rats

Background We previously demonstrated that the aqueous extract of the Schizandra chinensis fruit （AESC） ameliorated Cd-induced depletion of monoamine neurotransmitters in the brain through antioxidant activity.In the present study,we investigated the effect of AESC on anxiety-like behavior and the levels of norepinephrine and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol （a metabolite of norepinephrine） in different brain regions during ethanol withdrawal in rats.Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with 3 g/kg of ethanol （20％,w/v） or saline by daily intraperitoneal injection for 28 days followed by three days of withdrawal.During withdrawal,rats were given AESC （100 mg.kg 1.d-1 or 300 mg.kg 1·d1,P.O.） once a day for three days.Thirty minutes after the final dose of AESC,the anxiogenic response was evaluated using an elevated plus maze,and the plasma corticosterone levels were examined by radioimmunoassay.Meanwhile,the concentrations of norepinephrine and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenylglycol in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus and hippocampus were also measured by high performance liquid chromatography.Results Rats undergoing ethanol withdrawal exhibited substantial anxiety-like behavior,which was characterized by both the decrease in time spent in the open arms of the elevated plus maze and the increased level of corticosterone secretion,which were greatly attenuated by doses of AESC in a dose-dependent manner.The high performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed that ethanol withdrawal significantly increased norepinephrine and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenylglycol levels in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus,while not significantly altering them in the hippocampus.Similar to the results from the elevated plus maze test,the AESC significantly inhibited the elevation of norepinephrine and its metabolite in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus in a dose-dependent manner.Conclusions These results suggest that AESC attenuates anxiety-like behavior induced by ethanol withdrawal through modulation of the h

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether electroacupuncture(EA)ameliorates abnormal trigeminal neuralgia(TN)orofacial pain and anxiety-like behavior by altering synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus CA1.METHODS A mouse infraorbital nerve transection model(pTION)of neuropathic pain was established,and EA or sham EA was used to treat ipsilateral acu⁃puncture points(GV20-Baihui and ST7-Xia⁃guan).Golgi-Cox staining and transmission elec⁃tron microscopy(TEM)were administrated to observe the changes of synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus CA1.RESULTS Stable and persistent orofacial allodynia and anxiety-like behav⁃iors induced by pT-ION were related to changes in hippocampal synaptic plasticity.Golgi stain⁃ings showed a decrease in the density of dendritic spines,especially mushroom-type dendritic spines,in hippocampal CA1 neurons of pT-ION mice.TEM results showed that the density of synapses,membrane thickness of the postsynaptic density,and length of the synaptic active zone were decreased,whereas the width of the synaptic cleft was increased in pTION mice.EA attenu⁃ated pT-ION-induced orofacial allodynia and anx⁃iety-like behaviors and effectively reversed the abnormal changes in dendritic spines and syn⁃apse of the hippocampal CA1 region.CONCLU⁃SION EA modulates synaptic plasticity of hippo⁃campal CA1 neurons,and reduces abnormal oro⁃facial pain and anxiety-like behavior,providing evidence for a TN treatment strategy.

Vitamin D_(3) attenuates anxiety-like behavior in long-term ovariectomized rats with unpredictable mild stress

The impact of various vitamin D3(VD3)doses(1.0,2.5,or 5 mg/kg,s.c.)in mitigating the negative consequences of chronic unpredictable mild stress(CUMS)was investigated.Adult female rats with long-term estrogen deficiency were assessed using the sucrose preference test(SPT),the elevated plus-maze(EPM),the light/dark test(LDT),and the open-field test(OFT)to measure anhedonia-like and anxiety-like behavior.The corticosterone(CS)and adrenocorticotrophic hormone(ACTH)concentrations in blood serum and the brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF)expression in the hippocampus of long-term ovariectomized(OVX)rats were measured by ELISA kits and/or western blotting.Treatment with VD3(5.0 mg/kg),similarly to fluoxetine(10.0 mg/kg),significantly reduced the anhedonia profile in the SPT and anxiety-like behavior in the EPM and LDT,and CS and ACTH levels in blood serum.It also elevated BDNF levels in the hippocampus of long-term OVX/CUMS compared to OVX/CUMS/solvent rats.Thus,these findings suggest that VD3(5.0 mg/kg)administration might attenuate the anxiety-like profile in long-term OVX adult rats subjected to the CUMS.This might occur via activation of the BDNF signaling pathway in the hippocampus and via restoration of CS and ACTH levels in blood serum.

Prevalence and Related Risk Factors of anxiety and Depression among Chinese College Freshmen

Summary： anxiety, depression, and even suicidal ideation are becoming the most common mental health problems affecting Chinese college students. The present study investigated the prevalence of mental health problems and their predictors in a sample of 1048 Chinese college freshmen from Shang- hai. We used following brief screening instruments to measure symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as self-control and suicidal ideation： the Patient Health Questionnaire （PHQ-9）, the Generalized anxiety Disorder scale （GAD-7）, a mental health and mental health knowledge questionnaire （MK）, a mental disease-related attitude questionnaire （/VIA）, questionnaires about the knowledge of psychologi- cal services and utilities, the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview （MINI） Suicide module, the Self-Rated Health Measurement Scale （SFHMS）, the Self-Esteem Scale （SES）, the Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire （SCQ）, and the Perceived Stress Scale-10 （PSS-10）. Over half of the students suf- fered from at least one mental health problem. Approximately 65.55% of freshmen had depression, and 46.85% had anxiety. Minority status, low family income, and religious belief were significantly associ- ated with current mental health problems. These findings indicate that mental disorders are highly prevalent among the freshman student population. The prevalence of such mental disorders was greater than that of the general population, and the majority of students with mental health problems require treatment.
