Associations between body mass index in different childhood age periods and hyperuricemia in young adulthood:the China Health and Nutrition Survey cohort study

Background Few studies have evaluated the specific age period in childhood when the association of body mass index with adult hyperuricemia begins to be operative.This study aimed to examine the associations between body mass index in different childhood age periods and the risk of adult hyperuricemia in China.Methods The study cohort from the China Health and Nutrition Survey included 676 participants who were aged≥18 years and had data on uric acid in 2009 with at least one measurement of body mass index in childhood surveys before 2009.There were 357,365,358,427,and 432 observations in childhood age groups of≤5 years,6–9 years,10–12 years,13–15 years,and 16–18 years,respectively.Body mass index Z score was calculated based on 2000 Center for Disease Control and Prevention growth charts for the United States.Results Childhood body mass index Z scores measured at age≤5 years,6–9 years,10–12 years,and 13–15 years had no statistical association with adult uric acid.In comparison,childhood body mass index Z scores measured at age 16–18 years were significantly associated with adult uric acid(β=11.539,P=0.007),and the strength of association was stronger in girls(β=18.565,P=0.002)than in boys(β=9.209,P=0.087).In addition,childhood body mass index Z scores measured at age 16–18 years were significantly associated with an increased risk of adult hyperuricemia(odds ratio=1.323,95%confidence interval=1.003–1.746,P=0.048),but not for other age groups.Conclusion The association between childhood body mass index and young adulthood hyperuricemia was influenced by childhood age.

age, Growth and Maturation of Largehead Hairtail (Trichiurus japonicus) in the East China Sea

Largehead hairtail(Trichiurus japonicus)is a commercially important fish species in China Seas,characterized by wide distribution,seasonal migration,spawning all year round.Under long-term high fishing pressure,the biological traits of largehead hair-tail have changed,such as miniaturization,smaller size-at-age and earlier age-at-maturation.To explore its current biological charac-ters,we analyzed age,growth and maturation of largehead hairtail in the East China Sea by analyzing the otolith microstructure and gonads.The results showed that largehead hairtail is mainly composed of 1 year and 2 years old individuals.The estimated von Ber-talanffy growth function(VBGF)showed significant differences between sexes,and asymptotic pre-anal length of male is longer than that of female.Two spawning seasons were observed in spring and autumn by monthly gonadosomatic index(GSI).Compared to historic survey data,the average pre-anal length at age decreased and size-at-maturation became smaller in the East China Sea.This study updates life history parameters of largehead hairtail,and provides a reference for the present status of largehead hairtail,which can contribute to largehead haritail stock assessment and sustainable utilization in the China Seas.

Modelling the response of larch growth to age,density,and elevation and the implications for multifunctional management in northwest China

Plantations of Rupprecht's larch(Larix principis-rupprechtii)have been widely established in the drylands of northwest and north China under traditional fastgrowing plantation management strategies.These strategies and the long-term logging ban have led to over-populated stands with lower structural and functional stability,less economic benefit and higher water consumption.To guide the sustainable management of larch plantations,field surveys and historical data compilation were undertaken in the Liupan Mountains of northwest China.The main influencing factors(stand structure and site condition)and their effects on mean tree height,mean DBH and timber volumes were determined based on up-boundary line analysis.Tree growth models coupling the effects of tree age,stand density,and elevation were established.Both height and DBH markedly increased initially and then slowly with tree age,decreased with stand density,and showed unimodal change with elevation.The coupled growth models accounted for72-78%of the variations in tree height,DBH and timber growth.Recommendations for future plantation management are:(1)prolong the rotation to at least 60 years to produce large-diameter,high-quality timber and maintain greater carbon stocks;(2)zone the target functions of stands by elevation;and,(3)reduce stand density for balanced supply of multiple ecosystem services.The growth models developed can predict growth response of larch plantations to density alteration under given ages and elevations,and assist the transformation from traditional management for maximum timber production to site-specific and multifunctional management with longer rotations and moderate tree density.

The effect of age and abstinence time on semen quality:a retrospective study

This study analyzed the effects of male age and abstinence time on semen quality and explored the best abstinence time for Chinese males among different age groups.Semen parameters,including sperm kinetics,morphology,and DNA fragmentation index(DFI),were reviewed from 2952 men.Samples were divided into six age groups(≤25 years,26–30 years,31–35 years,36–40 years,41–45 years,and>45 years)and were divided into six groups according to different abstinence time(2 days,3 days,4 days,5 days,6 days,and 7 days).The differences in semen quality between the groups were compared,and the effect of age and abstinence time on semen quality was analyzed.Significant differences were observed in semen volume,progressive motility(PR),and DFI among the age groups(all P0.05).There were significant differences in semen volume,PR,and DFI among different abstinence time groups(all P0.05).Pearson analysis showed that male age and abstinence time were both significantly correlated with sperm kinetics and DFI(both P0.05).The box plots and histograms of men’s age,abstinence time,and semen quality show that most semen quality parameters differ significantly between the 2 days and 7 days abstinence groups and other groups at different ages.Except for the sperm morphology parameters,sperm kinetic parameters and sperm DFI are linearly related to male age and abstinence time.

Significance of age and sex in botulinum neurotoxin dosing for adductor spasmodic dysphonia

Objectives: This study aims to analyze the impact of age and sex on botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT-A) dosing and outcomes in adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD).Methods: A database review of all spasmodic dysphonia patients treated with BoNT from 1989 to 2018 at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona was performed. Only patients who had received ≥4 injections of BoNT-A for AdSD were included. Patients were divided into two cohorts to analyze age, with an age of first treatment cutoff of 60 years. Patients were divided into male and female cohorts to analyze sex.Results: The final analysis included 398 patients. The mean dose of BoNT-A per treatment was significantly higher in the younger cohort (4.4 vs. 3.9 units,p = 0.048). The mean maximal benefit was similar (72% vs. 70%,p = 0.48);however, the mean length of benefit was significantly shorter in younger patients (3.0 vs. 3.6 months,p age and sex influence BoNT-A dosing and outcomes in AdSD.

The intrinsic developmental age signal defines an age-dependent climbing behavior in cucumber

The tendril is a climbing organ in cucurbits and functions in physical support and to avoid shading by neighboring vegetation.However,how cucurbits produce tendrils to obtain climbing ability is largely unknown.In this study,tendril phenotypes were investigated during different developmental stages.Our results revealed that tendril growth exhibited an age-dependent pattern in cucurbits.Tendril growth was inhibited,and the tendril was formed as a short tendril[nonfunctional tendril(nonF-tendril),approximately 0.1 cm]during the seedling stage.In contrast,enhanced cell proliferation and cell expansion led to rapid elongation of the tendril during the climbing stage,and the tendril formed as a functional tendril(F-tendril,approximately 30 cm)to obtain climbing ability.RT-qPCR detection showed that age-dependent tendril growth correlated negatively with the abundance of the conserved age regulator CsmiR156.Defoliation induced CsmiR156 to inhibit CsSPLs,and F-tendril formation and climbing ability were delayed in defoliated cucumbers,which confirmed the role of CsmiR156 in regulating tendril growth in vivo.Additionally,exogenous gibberellin(GA)treatment showed that GA positively regulated tendril growth,and RT-qPCR detection showed that the GA bio-synthetic genes and metabolic genes were affected by age pathway,suggesting that the age pathway depended on GA bio-synthetic and metabolic pathway to regulate cell expansion to determine tendril growth.In summary,our work reveals that change in tendril type is an important marker of phase transition in cucumber,and tendril growth is regulated by an intrinsic developmental age signal,ensuring that the cucumber obtains climbing ability at a suitable age.

Bystanders or not?Microglia and lymphocytes in aging and stroke

As the average age of the world population increases,more people will face debilitating aging-associated conditions,including dementia and stroke.Not only does the incidence of these conditions increase with age,but the recovery afterward is often worse in older patients.Researchers and health professionals must unveil and understand the factors behind age-associated diseases to develop a therapy for older patients.Aging causes profound changes in the immune system including the activation of microglia in the brain.Activated microglia promote T lymphocyte transmigration leading to an increase in neuroinflammation,white matter damage,and cognitive impairment in both older humans and rodents.The presence of T and B lymphocytes is observed in the aged brain and correlates with worse stroke outcomes.Preclinical strategies in stroke target either microglia or the lymphocytes or the communications between them to promote functional recovery in aged subjects.In this review,we examine the role of the microglia and T and B lymphocytes in aging and how they contribute to cognitive impairment.Additionally,we provide an important update on the contribution of these cells and their interactions in preclinical aged stroke.

Primary malignant bone tumors incidence,mortality,and trends in China from 2000 to 2015

Background:Primary malignant bone tumors are uncommon,and their epidemiological features are rarely reported.We aimed to study the incidence and death characteristics of bone tumors from 2000 to 2015.Methods:Population-based cancer registries submitted registry data to National Central Cancer Registry of China(NCCRC).The data collected from 501 local cancer registries in China were assessed using NCCRC screening methods and criteria.Incidence and mortality rates of primary bone tumor were stratified by age group,gender,and area.age-standardized incidence and mortality rates were adjusted using the Chinese standard population in 2000 and Segi’s world population.The annual percentage change(APC)in rate was calculated using the Joinpoint Regression Program.Results:Data from 368 registries met quality control criteria,of which 134 and 234 were from urban and rural areas,respectively.The data covered 309,553,499 persons.The crude incidence,age-standardized incidence,and crude mortality rates were 1.77,1.35,and 1.31 per 100,000,respectively.Incidence and mortality rates were higher in males than those in females;they showed downward trends,with declines of 2.2%and 4.8%per year,respectively,and the rates in urban areas were lower than those in rural areas.Significant declining trends were observed in urban areas.Stable trends were seen in rural areas during 2000 to 2007,followed by downward trends.age-specific incidence and mortality rates showed stable trends in the age group of 0 to 19 years,and downward trends in the age group elder than 19 years.Conclusions:The incidence and mortality rates of primary malignant bone tumors in rural areas were higher compared to those in urban areas.Targeted prevention measures are required to monitor and control bone tumor incidence and improve the quality of life of affected patients.This research can provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of bone tumors,as well as basic information for follow-up research.

Clinical characteristics of 310 SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant patients and comparison with Delta and Beta variant patients in China

Although the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)Omicron variant has spread,data on the clinical characteristics of infected patients are limited.In this study,the demographic,clinical characteristics,and laboratory data of 310 SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant patients treated at Haihe Hospital of Tianjin were collected and analyzed.Information on these patients was compared to 96 patients with the Delta variant of concern(VOC)and 326 patients with the Beta VOC during the previous coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)outbreak in Harbin.Of the 310 patients infected with the Omicron variant,the median age was 35 years.Most patients were clinically classified as mild(57.74%),and the most common symptoms were cough(48.71%),fever(39.35%),and sore throat(38.26%).The results for different vaccination groups in the Omicron group showed that the median of“SARS-CoV-2 specific IgG”after 2 or 3 doses of vaccination was higher than the unvaccinated group(all Psage was associated with a higher proportion of moderate cases and lower asymptomatic and mild cases based on clinical classifications.Compared to the Delta and Beta groups,the median age of the Omicron group was younger.The total number of asymptomatic patients and mild patients in the Omicron virus group was higher than the Delta and Beta groups(60.97%vs.54.17%vs.47.55%).This study presented the clinical characteristics of the first group of patients infected with the Omicron variant in Tianjin,China,and compared their clinical features with patients infected by the Delta and Beta variants,which would increase our understanding of the characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant.

Gonad traits and age structure of the sea urchin Heliocidaris crassispina in central range:a comparison with rangeextenders

The sea urchin Heliocidaris crassispina has northern expanded in geographic range to Toga Bay,Oga Peninsula in the Sea of Japan due to the global warming.To demonstrate the gonad traits and age structure of H.crassispina in the central range and compare the difference with those in northern extended range,we collected 100 H.crassispina individuals from a barren off Shitsumi,Fukui(central range),in August 2018.Their growth,gonad traits(size,development and color),and sex ratio were investigated and compared with those in Toga Bay,in August 2014(extended range).The successive 2012–2016 year classes of H.crassispina indicated successive juvenile recruitment in the central range,as found in the extended range.The individuals at three years old in central range were obviously larger than those in the extended range,showing large test diameter and body weight,possibly due to the higher temperature in central range than that in northern extended range.In addition,a balanced sex ratio in the central range was found,in contrast to the female-skewed sex ratio found in the extended range.Gonadal development was sex-and site-dependent.The testicular development in the central range was not only delayed in comparison to ovarian development,but also less delayed than those in the extended range,which possibly attribute to the higher water temperature in the central range.A significantly lower male gonad index and L*(lightness)value was recorded in central ranges compared to that in extended range,possibly due to the releasement of sperm of H.crassispina in central ranges.
