Abundance of antibiotic resistance genes and their association with bacterial communities in activated sludge of wastewater treatment plants: Geographical distribution and network analysis

Wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs) are deemed reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs). Bacterial phylogeny can shape the resistome in activated sludge. However, the co-occurrence and interaction of ARGs abundance and bacterial communities in different WWTPs located at continental scales are still not comprehensively understood. Here, we applied quantitative PCR and Miseq sequence approaches to unveil the changing profiles of ARGs(sul1, sul2, tet W, tet Q, tet X), int I1 gene, and bacterial communities in 18 geographically distributed WWTPs. The results showed that the average relative abundance of sul1 and sul2 genes were 2.08 × 10^(-1) and 1.32 × 10^(-1) copies/16 S rRNA copies, respectively. The abundance of tet W gene was positively correlated with the Shannon diversity index(H′), while both studied sul genes had significant positive relationship with the int I1 gene. The highest average relative abundances of sul1, sul2, tet X, and int I1 genes were found in south region and oxidation ditch system. Network analysis found that 16 bacterial genera co-occurred with tet W gene. Co-occurrence patterns were revealed distinct community interactions between aerobic/anoxic/aerobic and oxidation ditch systems. The redundancy analysis model plot of the bacterial community composition clearly demonstrated that the sludge samples were significant differences among those from the different geographical areas,and the shifts in bacterial community composition were correlated with ARGs. Together,these findings from the present study will highlight the potential risks of ARGs and bacterial populations carrying these ARGs, and enable the development of suitable technique to control the dissemination of ARGs from WWTPs into aquatic environments.

In an in vitro transcription system, the intact virion of rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV) coulddirect the synthesis of an acid-insoluble material. This indicated that the virus might contain RNA poly-merase activity, with an optimum range of activity at 30-40℃, maximal at 35℃. Divalent cationswere essential for the activity. Transcription products accumulated in the incubation period from 0 to4 h In addition, the polymerase activity declined if the virus was heat-shocked or treated with chy-motrypsin, which implied that no prior treatment was required to activate transcription catalyzed byRRSV.

Background: Inhibiting the enzyme acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase(ACAT) has beneficial effects on foam cell formation and therefore has the potential to favorably influence the progression of coronary atherosclerosis. The aim of this study is to determine whether ACAT inhibition, when added to usual medical care, reduces atheroma progression in subjects with coronary artery disease. Methods: Five hundred thirty-four subjects with established coronary artery disease on angiography were randomized to receive the experimental ACAT inhibitor, pactimibe, 100 mg daily or matching placebo for 18 months. The primary efficacy parameter will be the nominal change in percent atheroma volume determined by analysis of pullback intravascular ultrasound(IVUS) images of matched coronary artery segments acquired at baseline and 18-month follow-up. In addition, the effect of pactimibe on plasma lipids and inflammatory markers and the incidence of clinical cardiovascular events will also be assessed. Conclusion: Serial IVUS has emerged as a sensitive imaging modality to assess the impact that novel antiatherosclerotic strategies have on the arterial wall. In this study, IVUS will be used to assess whether ACAT inhibition modifies progression of atherosclerotic plaque.

A successful method of activation, in which trimethylamine oxide is used to activate the tricobalt carbonyl clusters at room temperature, has been reported in this paper. A series of tricobalt clusters containing monodentate phosphine ligand PPh3 and bidentate phosphine ligand dppm （bis（diphenylphosphino）methane） have also been synthesized by making use of the quasi-coordinatively unsaturated clusters （μ3-CR）Co3（CO）9-n（MeCN）n（R=Me, Ph, H, Cl,n=1, 2）. The structures of these clusters reported in this paper have been characterized by IR, NMR and MS.

In this paper,the regularity on spontaneous dis-charges of the single unit in amygdaloid nucleus(AMYG)in rabbits were analyzed and whether thesignal of Electro-acupuncture(EA)at Neignan (P 6)can reach the AMYG was further observed withthe technique of glass microelectrode.It was foundthat the signals of EA at Neignan can reach AMYGand activate or inhibit the electrical activity of somencurons,manifesting two response patterns:fre-quency-increasing and frequency-decreasing.Addi-tionally,the same neuron had a different response tothe signals of EA at Neiguan and Zusanli(St 36),suggesting that a relative specificity of acupoints ispresent.

Huatuojiaji are extra-channel acupoints which are first described in A Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies, and the clinical application of which has been expanded a great deal in modern times. In the end of 1970s, the successful application of Huatuojiaji points in acupuncture anaesthesia brought the research on Huatuojiaji points to its climax; and in recent years, great progress has been made in the study of clinical application, improvement of curative effects and functional mechanism of Huatuojiaji points. According to the theories of acupuncture and moxibustion that puncturing Huatuojiaji can dredge channels, promote flow of qi, regulate yin and yang, and activate the Du Channel and the Urinary Bladder Channel, 300 cases of apoplexy were thus treated with good curative effects. There are altogther 56 points, 28 on each side of the spine, 0.5 cun lateral to the spinous process. The prescription for apoplexy includes C1-7, T1-9 and L2-4. Of the 300 cases of apoplexy, 100 were cured, 107 markedly effective, 87 improved, and 6 ineffective, the total effective rate being 98%.

Effects of acupuncture on the brain function of 80 healthy adults and patientswere analyzed using EEG topography and possitron CT (PET). Though changes in EEG topogramcaused by acupuncture stimulation were seen all over the cortex, they were prominent in the area fromthe frontal lobe to the parietal lobe. Positron CT image revealed that acupuncture stimulation tem-porarily activated from the paleocoretx to the neocortex, affecting wide range of the cranial nerve cellsincluding A10 nerve. These results suggest that comfortable stimulations by acupuncture have sucheffects as to remove the friction between the neocortex and the paleocortex, regulate the autonomicnervous system, and activate the Healer (the healing force of nature) at the brain stem level includingthe hypothalamus.

There is no question that learning a foreign language like English is different from learning other subjects, mainly because it is new to us Chinese and there is no enough environment. But that doesn’t mean we have no way to learn it and do it well .If asked to identify the most powerful influences on learning, motivation would probably be high on most teachers’ and learners’ lists. It seems only sensible to assume that English learning is most likely to occur when the learners want to learn. That is, when motivation such as interest, curiosity, or a desire achieves, the learners would be engaged in learning. However, how do we teachers motivate our students to like learning and learn well? Here, rewards both extrinsic and intrinsic are of great value and play a vital role in English learning.
