Bridging the achievement gap for Students： A Blueprint for Success

The purpose of this research is to identify and examine the achievement gaps between students. Over the past thirty years, emphasis has been placed on achievement levels of students in this country. State test results, SAT Scores, ACT scores and other assessment instruments have been used to determine performance standards and test results for students. Data analyzed for White students compared to African American and Hispanic students have provided critical information in identifying academic progress and skill deficits for all students. This article will highlight some of the achievement gaps which exit among White, African American and Hispanic Students. Recommendations will also be emphasized to help improve student achievement levels in an effort to close the achievement gap.

The Effect of Family Background and Parental Expectations on Eighth Graders’Academic achievement in Rural and Urban China

Extensive research has suggested that there is a large rural-urban student achievement gap in ***,less is known about the effects of family background and parental expectations on student *** a large representative sample of Chinese eighth graders,this study examines these *** find that:(1)Rather than a rural/urban hukou(household registration system)type,it is variation in family background,especially family socioeconomic status(SES),which plays a significant role in student achievement;(2)although factors of family background show different patterns of influence on Chinese,mathematics,and English achievement,maternal education and home educational resources are significantly positive predictors consistently across three subjects;(3)parental expectations are significantly and positively associated with Chinese,mathematics,and English achievement.

The Education of the Children of Immigrants： A Cross-Cultural Study Between New York and Rome

Teachers of CLD （culturally and linguistically diverse） public school students New York and Rome, Italy were interviewed about their work with this unique, growing subset of learners. The 12 teachers＇ stories highlight myriad issues facing educators across the globe. Each teacher had recently participated in a research-based and government-sponsored professional development program focused on second language acquisition and culturally responsive pedagogy. Themes emerged through the analysis of individual interviews and classroom observations. These findings highlight teachers＇ perceptions of effective professional development, along with identification of institutional barriers impeding the delivery of best practices to CLD students. Cross-cultural comparisons are made which suggest an inconsistency in educational services for CLD students, along with an urgent need for professional development courses for teachers and administrators. The educators＇ voices shed light on both the challenges and rewards associated with this important work.
