Microfluidic one-step, aqueous synthesis of size-tunable zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 for protein delivery

zeolitic imidazolate framework-8(ZIF-8)with porous structure,biocompatibility,and pH-sensitive release behavior is a promising nanoplatform for protein delivery.However,it is still a challenging task for a practical synthesis of protein-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles.Here we report an all-aqueous microfluidic reactor for one-step,rapid,and highly controlled synthesis of ZIF-8 nanoparticles with high protein loading at room temperature.Microfluidic reactor allows for an ultrafast(8 nanoparticles with tunable sizes(13.2–191.4 nm)in less than 30 s.By pre-mixing various proteins such as bovine serum albumin(BSA)(isoelectric point(pI)=5.82),ovalbumin(OVA)(pI=4.82),or RNase A(pI=8.93)with 2-MIM,ZIF-8 nanoparticles can be synthesized with protein encapsulation efficiency over 97%.Among the nanoparticles with different sizes,25 nm ZIF-8 nanoparticles show the best performance in promoting the cellular uptake of protein payload.Using OVA as a model protein,we demonstrate that 25 nm ZIF-8 nanoparticles significantly enhance the cytosolic delivery of antigen,as indicated by the effective activation of dendritic cells.We anticipate that this microfluidic synthesis of nanomaterials may advance the emerging field of cytosolic protein delivery.

Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)have been intensely studied for the past few decades as an enormous family of highly tunable porous materials with promisingly applicable functionalities in adsorption,separation,catalysis,sensing,electrochemistry,and a great number of emerging purposes.As a classic MOF,zeolitic imidazolate framework-8(ZIF-8)is conventionally one of the very few MOF members that has been commercialized with considerable production.

Synthesis and Antibacterial Properties of ZIF-8/Ag-Modified Titanium Alloy

The loosening of implant due to bacterial infection brings great difficulties to the implantation of bionic titanium devices.In this study,the zeolitic imidazolate framework 8(ZIF-8)and silver ions were added to the surface of titanium alloy to obtain a uniform coating,which has nice biological activity and antibacterial property.The material structure characterizations,such as X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),proved that titanium is successfully modified with ZIF-8 and silver ions.It has micro-and nano-level characteristics,rough porous morphology,and excellent apatite inducing ability.The water contact angle experiment shows that the addition of ZIF-8 greatly increases the hydrophilicity of material,which provides conditions for the attachment of osteoblasts.The polarization curve obtained from the electrochemical test proves that the addition of ZIF-8 coating improves the corrosion resistance of titanium.The release of silver ion has a strong growth inhibitory effect on E.coli,and exhibits excellent antibacterial properties.Therefore,the preparation of ZIF-8/Ag coatings on 3D printed titanium provides a new option for the development of orthopedic implants.

CDs assembled metal-organic framework:Exogenous coreactant-free biosensing platform with pore confinement-enhanced electrochemiluminescence

Despite the various synthesis approachs to obtain luminous carbon dots(CDs),it is still quite challenging to construct the efficient electrochemiluminescence(ECL)owing to their low ECL reactivity and easy agglomeration.Herein,an efficient and concise ECL system was skillfully constructed by taking advantage of the nitrogen and sulfur co-doped CDs(N,S-CDs)with surfaces rich in hydrazide groups as luminophors to emit intense ECL,and metal-organic framework(MOF)as the matrix to confine CDs in its nanospace.Surprisingly,the proposed CDs assembled MOF(CDs/ZIF-8)enhanced anodic ECL signal up to 250%of pure CDs under the exogenous coreactant-free condition.As a proof of concept,the highly sensitive detection of uric acid(UA)was realized by the constructed ECL platform with a low detection limit of 3.52 nmol/L ranging from 10 nmol/L to 50μmol/L.This work expanded ideas for the application of pore confinement effect,and provided references for the detection of disease biomarkers of gout and hyperuricemia.

Fe-N-C endowed with inexpensiveness,high activity,and excellent anti-poisoning power have emerged as promising candidate catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR).Single-atom Fe-N-C electrocatalysts derived from Fe-doped ZIF-8 represent the top-level ORR performance.However,the current fabrication of Fe-doped ZIF-8 relies on heavy consumption of time,energy,cost and organic solvents.Herein,we develop a rapid and solvent-free method to produce Fe-doped ZIF-8 under microwave irradiation,which can be easily amplified in combination with ball-milling.After rational pyrolysis,Fe-N-C catalysts with atomic FeN4 sites well dispersed on the hierarchically porous carbon matrix are obtained,which exhibit exceptional ORR performance with a half-wave potential of 0.782 V(vs.reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE))and brilliant methanol tolerance.The assembled direct methanol fuel cells(DMFCs)endow a peak power density of 61 mW cm^(-2) and extraordinary stability,highlighting the application perspective of this strategy.

A large-scale experimental study on CO_(2) capture utilizing slurry-based ab-adsorption approach

The increasing concentration of CO_(2) in atmosphere is deemed the main reason of global warming.Therefore,efficiently capturing CO_(2) from various sources with energy conservation is of great significance.Herein,a series of experiments were carried out to successfully test the slurry-based ab-adsorption method for continuously capturing CO_(2) in the large-scale cycled separation unit with cost-effect taking into account the scale-up criteria.A bubble column(with height 4900 mm and inner diameter 376 mm)and a desorption tank(with volume 310 L)are the essential components of the separation unit.The novel slurry used in this study was formed with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 and 2-methylimidazole-water solution.The influence of operation conditions was investigated systematically.The results show that increasing sorption pressure and slurry height level,decreasing gas volume flow and sorption temperature are beneficial for separation processes.The volume fraction of CO_(2) in the feed gas was also studied.Although the scale-up effect had been observed and it was found that it exerted a negative effect on CO_(2) capture,depending on experimental conditions,CO_(2) removal efficiency could still reach 85%-95%and the maximum CO_(2) loading in the recycled slurry could be up to0.007 mol·L-1·kPa-1.Furthermore,the slurry-based method could be operated well even under very moderate regeneration conditions(333 K and 0.05 MPa),which means that the novel approach shows greater energy conservation than traditional amine absorption methods.

Atomic layer deposition-induced integration of N-doped carbon particles on carbon foam for flexible supercapacitor

Flexible devices have attracted abundant attention in energy storage systems.In this paper,we presented a novel approach for fabricating flexible supercapacitor based on metal organic frameworks-derived material.In this approach,a uniform zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 layer with a high mass loading was deposited on a flexible carbon foam(CF)skeleton efficiently by the induction of a uniform ZnO nanomembrane prepared via an atomic layer deposition technique.A flexible N-doped carbon particle-carbon foam(N-CP-CF)composite with a hierarchically porous structure and a large specific surface area(i.e.,538 m^(2) g^(-1))was obtained in a subsequent pyrolysis process.The resultant materials have the excellent electrochemical performance(i.e.,a high specific capacitance of 300 F g^(-1) and a high energy density of 20.8 W h kg^(-1)).The N-CP-CF composite can provide a stable capacitance(i.e.,250 F g^(-1))and an energy density(i.e.,17.36 W h kg^(-1))under large deformation(25% of original thickness).This work could propose a promising strategy in fabrication of flexible electrode with a large potential towards energy storage applications in the future.
