The relationship between the summer northernmost position of southerly wind and precipitation over East China is investigated. The northern limit of summer southerly wind index(INLSSW) over East China is defined as the latitude where the zonal-averaged(105–120°E)low-level meridional wind is equal to zero. Results show that there is a significant negative(positive) correlation between INLSSW and summer precipitation over the yangtze River(North China) region. Thus, the proposed INLSSW may have implications for the prediction of summer precipitation anomalies in these regions. In positive INLSSW years, a cyclonic circulation anomaly is observed over the tropical western North Pacific and an anticyclonic circulation anomaly is seen over the subtropics of East China,accompanied by southerly anomalies over East China.This leads to above-normal moisture penetrating into the northern part of East China. In addition, significant upward(downward) motion anomalies can be found over the North China(yangtze River) region. As a result, there are significant positive(negative) precipitation anomalies over the North China(yangtze River) region. Further examination shows that sea surface temperature anomalies over the tropical eastern Pacific and Indian Ocean both contribute to the formation of INLSSW-related circulation anomalies over the tropical western North Pacific.

Based on Zhu Xi's statement that Laozi's teachings were very cruel,Wang Fuzhi condemned Laozi as a crafty,petty person in his Confucian commentaries.Yet,he had to understand the Laozi or Daodejing sympathetically when he commented on it in Laozi yan老子衍(Extended Commentary on the Laozi).As a result,he showed inconsistency in his criticism and evaluation of the author.Some scholars have noted this problem but have not shed ink analyzing it.This essay finds that Wang Fuzhi's ambiguous attitude toward Laozi results from his Confucian prejudice against other schools and his failure to grasp the breadth and depth of Laozi's thought.From the perspective of Heaven,Laozi promoted accommodation and non-interference in self-cultivation and governance,summed up by the maxim that"the sage manages affairs without deliberation,and spreads teachings without words."In contrast,Wang Fuzhi stuck to the distinction between Confucianism and Daoism,and tried to use humanity and ritual propriety to supplement that which Heaven does not provide;as such,he criticized Laozi as crafty and irresponsible.Wang Fuzhi's criticism neither hits the mark regarding Laozi's weakness nor maintains a concordance with his earlier sympathetic appraisal in Laozi yan;the reason for this is that Wang Fuzhi could not fully grasp Laozi's thought from a Confucian and anthropocentric perspective.

Unreliable Paratexts in Intralingual Translation: A Case Study of an Excerpted English Translation of San Guo yan Yi

This paper contains a charge of plagiarism in which Cheung Yik-man, the translator of a classic Chinese novel San Guo yan Yi, failed to acknowledge the existing translation by yang Xianyi and Gladys yang while Cheung's retranslation is extremely close to yangs' with some changes only in the first two chapters. In this case, paratexts to Cheung Yikman's version covered up the behaviour of plagiarism, which is different from Lawrence Venuti's discussion of paratexts' function in his 2004 essay as "an immediate form of intertextuality" and "make[s] explicit the competing interpretation". This article examines the unreliability of paratexts in intralingual translation, based on a case in English translations of San Guo yan Yi: Cheung Yik-man's translation of "The Battle of the Red Cliff" excerpted from the novel.

According to Jakobson's definition, intralingual translation involves rewording an already translated text in the same target language; however, discussions on a special kind of intralingual translation, Self-Retranslation, i.e. the translator retranslating his or her own previous versions, are few. This paper examines Self-Retranslation from within the wider perspective of intralingual translation. Two issues, which are the real relation between the source text and the target text, and self-referentiality framed in self-retranslator's mind, are proposed and elaborated, based on two intralingual English translations of the classic Chinese novel San Guo yan Yi.
