Validation of the Meta-Analysis Global Group in Chronic Heart Failure risk score for the prediction of 1-year mortality in a Chinese cohort

Background: The Meta-Analysis Global Group in Chronic Heart Failure (MAGGIC) risk score was developed in 2013 to predict survival in heart failure (HF) patients. However, it has yet to be validated in a Chinese population. Our study aimed to investigate the ability of the score to predict 1-year mortality in a Chinese population.Methods: Consecutive patients with HF were retrospectively selected from the inpatient electronic medical records of the cardiology department in a regional hospital in China. A total integer score was calculated for each enrolled patient based on the value of each risk factor in the MAGGIC scoring system. Each enrolled patient was followed for at least 1 year. The observational endpoint of this study was all-cause mortality. The predictive ability of the MAGGIC score was assessed by comparing observed and predicted mortality within 1 year.Results: Between January 2018 and December 2020, a total of 635 patients were included in the study: 57 (9.0%) of whom died within 1 year after discharge. The average age of all patients was 74.6 ± 11.2 years, 264 of them (41.6%) were male, and the average left ventricular ejection fraction was 50.7% ± 13.2%. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.840 (95% confidence interval: 0.779, 0.901), which indicated a fair discriminatory ability of the score. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test result (χ^(2) = 12.902, degree of freedom = 8,P = 0.115) indicated that the MAGGIC score had good calibration. The decision curve analysis showed that the MAGGIC score yielded a good clinical net benefit and net reduction in interventions.Conclusions: This Validation of the MAGGIC score showed that it has a good ability to predict 1-year mortality in Chinese patients with HF after discharge. Due to regional and inter-hospital differences, external Validation studies need to be further confirmed in other centers.

Development and global Validation of a 1-week-old piglet head finite element model for impact simulations

Purpose:Child head injury under impact scenarios(e.***.falls,vehicle crashes,etc.)is an important topic in the field of injury biomechanics.The head of piglet was commonly used as the surrogate to investigate the biomechanical response and mechanisms of pediatric head injuries because of the similar cellular structures and material properties.However,up to date,piglet head models with accurate geometry and material properties,which have been validated by impact experiments,are seldom.We aim to develop such a model for future research.Methods:In this study,first,the detailed anatomical structures of the piglet head,including the skull,suture,brain,pia mater,dura mater,cerebrospinal fluid,scalp and soft tissue,were constructed based on CT scans.Then,a structured butterfly method was adopted to mesh the complex geometries of the piglet head to generate high-quality elements and each component was assigned corresponding constitutive material models.Finally,the guided drop tower tests were conducted and the force-time histories were ectracted to validate the piglet head finite element model.Results:Simulations were conducted on the developed finite element model under impact conditions and the simulation results were compared with the experimental data from the guided drop tower tests and the published literature.The average peak force and duration of the guide drop tower test were similar to that of the simulation,with an error below 10%.The inaccuracy was below 20%.The average peak force and duration reported in the literature were comparable to those of the simulation,with the exception of the duration for an impact energy of 11 J.The results showed that the model was capable to capture the response of the pig head.Conclusion:This study can provide an effective tool for investigating child head injury mechanisms and protection strategies under impact loading conditions.

Development and Validation of a transient simulation model of a full-scale PCM embedded radiant chilled ceiling

The recent significant rise in space cooling energy demand due to the massive use of air-conditioning systems has adversely changed buildings’energy use patterns globally.The updated energy technology perspectives highlight the need for innovative cooling systems to address this growing cooling demand.Phase change material embedded radiant chilled ceiling(PCM-RCC)has lately acquired popularity as they offer more efficient space cooling together with further demand-side flexibility.Recent advancements in PCM-RCC applications have increased the necessity for reliable simulation models to assist professionals in identifying improved designs and operating settings.In this study,a transient simulation model of PCM-RCC has been developed and validated using measured data in a full-scale test cabin equipped with newly developed PCM ceiling panels.This model,developed in the TRNSYS simulation studio,includes Type 399 that uses the Crank-Nicolson algorithm coupled with the enthalpy function to solve transient heat transfer in PCM ceiling panels.The developed model is validated in both free-running and active operation modes,and its quality is then evaluated using several Validation metrics.The results obtained in multiple operating scenarios confirm that the model simulates the transient behaviour of the PCM-RCC system with an accuracy within±10%.Aided by this validated model,which offers the user detailed flexibilities in the system design and its associated operating schemas,PCM-RCC’s potentials regarding peak load shifting,energy savings,and enhanced thermal comfort can be investigated more reliably.

An Experimental Validation Study on Ferrofluid Evaporation

The current research on the evaporation of ferrofluids mainly focuses on the characterization of ultra-low vapor pressure ferrofluids in vacuum and the theoretical analysis of the evaporation process. Few studies have focused on the experimental Validation of the proposed evaporation rate equations and on the comparison of the differences in ferrofluid evaporation. In this study, based on the Bolotov’s model, an evaporation rate equation is deduced from the experimental model. The experimental study included a comparison of the evaporation, magnetic particle volume fraction, temperature, height of the fluid surface from the outlet, and magnetic field of a kerosene-based ferrofluid and its base carrier liquid. The prepared sample was evaporated in a test tube, and the evaporation rate was calculated by measuring the weight loss of the sample. The experimental results show that the evaporation rate of the base carrier liquid is higher than that of the ferrofluid. The smaller the volume fraction of the magnetic particles, the greater the evaporation rate. The magnetic particles play a key role in preventing evaporation of the base liquid. The higher the temperature, the smaller the deviation of the evaporation rate from the predicted value. The evaporation rates obtained by the two control groups at the height of the fluid surface from the outlet were lower than the predict value. The magnetic field had a certain promotional effect on the evaporation of the ferrofluid. The experimental results were consistent with the results obtained using Bolotov’s model. This research validates Bolotov’s model and shows that the model is somewhat biased but still responds well to different variables.

Validation and Application of the Chinese Version of the M.D.Anderson Symptom Inventory in Breast Cancer Patients

Objective To validate and use the Chinese Version of the M.D.Anderson Symptom Inventory(MDASI-C)to assess the symptom burden of breast cancer patients in China.Methods A total of 342 breast cancer patients in China participated in this study.Their symptoms were investigated with the MDASI-C from November 2020 to February 2021,and the reliability and validity of this tool were evaluated,respectively.Cluster analysis and correlation analysis were also performed.Results The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient values of the symptom and interference items were 0.827 and 0.880,respectively.Construct validity revealed a four-factor structure.The Kaiser—Meyer—Olkin value was 0.760.The Karnofsky Performance Status,treatment phase,and cancer stage of the patients were grouped,and the differences of scores within the groups were significant.In addition,the employment status,education level,and age of the patients were significantly correlated with the symptoms.The correlation analysis of the education level of the patients showed that most of the symptoms and interference items were reduced as the education level was increased.The top three symptoms were disturbed sleep(3.10±2.52),difficulty remembering(2.54±2.30),and fatigue(2.24±2.13).The clinical and biochemical indicators such as body mass index and neutral granulocyte lymphocyte ratio had effects on many symptoms.As the patients’BMI increased,the patients’pain,disturbed sleep,and difficulty remembering were aggravated,and numbness was alleviated.Conclusion The MDASI-C is a reliable and effective assessment tool to evaluate patients with breast cancer in China.The symptoms are related to many clinical and biochemical indicators.

Validation and accuracy analysis of wind products from scatterometer onboard the HY-2B satellite

The Chinese marine dynamic environment satellite HY-2B was launched in October 2018 and carries a Ku-band scatterometer.This paper focuses on the accuracies of HY-2B scatterometer wind data during the period from November 2018 to May 2021.The HY-2B wind data are validated against global moored buoys operated by the U.S.National Data Buoy Center and Tropical Atmosphere Ocean,numerical model data by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction,and the Advanced Scatterometer data issued by the Remote Sensing System.The results showed that the wind speeds and directions observed by the HY-2B scatterometer agree well with these buoy wind measurements.The root-mean-squared errors(RMSEs)of the HY-2B wind speed and direction are 0.74 m/s and 11.74°,respectively.For low wind speeds(less than 5 m/s),the standard deviation of the HY-2B-derived wind direction is higher than 20°,which implies that the HY-2B wind direction for low wind speeds is less accurate than that for moderate to high wind speed ranges.The RMSE of the HY-2B wind speed is slightly larger in high latitude oceans(60°–90°S and 60°–90°N)than in low latitude regions.Furthermore,the dependence of the residuals on the cross-track location of wind vector cells and the stability of the HY-2B scatterometer wind products are discussed.The wind stability assessment results indicate that a clear yearly oscillation is observed for the HY-2B wind speed bias which is due to seasonal weather variations.In general,the accuracy of HY-2B winds meets the operational precision requirement and is consistent with other wind data.

Validation of the multi-satellite merged sea surface salinity in the South China Sea

Sea surface salinity(SSS)is an essential variable of ocean dynamics and climate research.The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity(SMOS),Aquarius,and Soil Moisture Active Passive(SMAP)satellite missions all provide SSS measurements.The European Space Agency(ESA)Climate Change Initiative Sea Surface Salinity(CCI-SSS)project merged these three satellite SSS data to produce CCI L4SSS products.We validated the accuracy of the four satellite products(CCI,SMOS,Aquarius,and SMAP)using in-situ gridded data and Argo floats in the South China Sea(SCS).Compared with in-situ gridded data,it shows that the CCI achieved the best performance(RMSD:0.365)on monthly time scales.The RMSD of SMOS,Aquarius,and SMAP(SMOS:0.389;Aquarius:0.409;SMAP:0.391)are close,and the SMOS takes a slight advantage in contrast with Aquarius and SMAP.Large discrepancies can be found near the coastline and in the shelf seas.Meanwhile,CCI with lower RMSD(0.295)perform better than single satellite data(SMOS:0.517;SMAP:0.297)on weekly time scales compared with Argo floats.Overall,the merged CCI have the smallest RMSD among the four satellite products in the SCS on both weekly time scales and monthly time scales,which illustrates the improved accuracy of merged CCI compared with the individual satellite data.

Identification and Validation of novel loci associated with wheat quality through a genome-wide association study

Understanding the genetic basis of quality-related traits contributes to the improvement of grain protein concentration(GPC),grain starch concentration(GSC),and wet gluten concentration(WGC)in wheat.In this study,a genome-wide association study(GWAS)based on a mixed linear model(MLM)was performed on 236 wheat accessions,including 160 cultivars and 76 landraces,using a 55K single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)array in multiple environments.A total of 12 stable QTL/SNPs that control different quality traits in this populations in at least two environments under stripe rust stress were identified.Among these 12,three,seven and two QTLs associated with GPC,GSC and WGC were characterized,respectively,and they were located on chromosomes(chr)1B,1D,2A,2B,2D,3B,3D,5D,and 7D with the phenotypic variation explained(PVE)ranging from 4.2 to 10.7%.Compared with the previously reported QTLs/genes,five QTLs(QGsc.sicau-1BL,QGsc.sicau-1DS,QGsc.sicau-2DL.1,QGsc.sicau-2DL.2,and QWgc.sicau-5DL)were potentially novel.KASP markers for the SNPs AX-108770574 and AX-108791420 on chr5D associated with wet gluten concentration were successfully developed.The phenotypes of the cultivars containing the A-allele in AX-108770574and the T-allele in AX-108791420 were extremely significantly(P<0.01)higher than those of the landraces containing the G-or C-allele with respect to the wet gluten concentration in each of the environments.The KASP markers developed and validated in this study could be utilized in molecular breeding aimed at improving the quality of wheat.

Spatial and Temporal Validation of In-Situ and Satellite Weather Data for the South West Agricultural Region of Australia

Seasonal variations in weather have significant impacts on crop yields.The accuracy of weather data is an important consideration for crop yield models.This study uses an independent in-situ weather station network to validate the accuracy of monthly temperature and precipitation data from the in-situ weather station network operated by the Bureau of Meteorology(BOM),interpolated gridded data from this network,and satellite weather data for the South West Agricultural Region of Australia.This region covers five classes of the K?ppen-Geiger climate classification system and is responsible for 10 billion AUD of agricultural produce annually.A strong bias was found for the maximum temperatures in the Copernicus LST(land surface temperature)satellite product.This bias was linearly correlated with the in-situ temperature and exceeded 20℃in warmer months.Due to the bias’s linear nature,a linear correction was able to reduce the root-mean-square error(RMSE)of the Copernicus LST product by 82%.This process was tested for other regions of Australia and,despite some regional differences,a linear correction consistently reduced RMSE by 80%.The Validation process demonstrated that the dataset with reliably the lowest RMSE is the gridded weather data calculated from BOM’s in-situ weather stations.Nearest neighbor in-situ weather stations generally had the next lowest RMSE,followed by weather-station corrected satellite products and lastly the non-weather station corrected satellite products.While the in-situ gridded product generally had the lowest RMSE,there were spatial and seasonal variations.Monthly maximum temperatures were more accurately measured by the bias-corrected Copernicus LST product in the northern and eastern extents(where there is a lower density of BOM in-situ stations).Monthly minimum temperatures from the Copernicus LST product had similar to slightly better RMSE than the Australian Water Availability Project(AWAP)product for the southern half of the study area and the rain-gauge corrected GSMaP(Global Sat

Evaluation of several recently developed sampling strategies within the coarse pixel scale for Validation of coarse-resolution satellite albedo products

Due to the spatial heterogeneity and the spatial scale mismatch between in situ and satellite-based measurements,optimal ground sampling should be made to increase the representativeness of in situ observations. Therefore,many ground sampling strategies have been proposed,but their performance within the coarse pixel has not been evaluated. Hence,this study evaluated four typical methods regarding their ability to obtain pixel scale ground ‘truth’. Random combination (RC) performs best,with the always fewest samples to satisfy representativeness errors (REs) of 3% in the case of a small number of samples. When the goal of sampling is to obtain in situ measurements with REs close to 0 at the expense of increasing the number of samples,cumulative representativeness sampling (CRS) is more effective than RC in less heterogeneous areas. Geo-statistical model-based sampling (GSS) does not work well because the number of samples within the coarse pixel scale cannot support a robust semi-variogram model. Stratified sampling (SS) is highly dependent on spatial heterogeneity and does not work well in the case of small sample sizes. This study gives important guidance for ground sample deployment within the coarse pixel for Validation of coarse-resolution satellite albedo products over a heterogeneous surface.
