Reliability Evaluation of IEEE 802.11p-Based Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication in an urban expressway

IEEE 802.11p/DSRC （Dedicated Short Range Communication） is considered to be a promising wireless communication standard for enhancing transportation safety and efficiency. However, IEEE 802.11p-based Vehicle- to-Vehicle （V2V） communication is still unreliable because of the complicating factors of high vehicle speed and complex radio environments. In this paper, we performed a data-based evaluation of V2V communication reliability, using real-world measurements in a typical urban expressway in Beijing. With respect to the characteristics of the urban expressway and our experimental data, we found road slope and traffic density to be the major environmental factors having a significant impact on the V2V communication＇s Line-Of-Sight （LOS） conditions. On the basis of these two factors, we propose a fuzzy classification method for the LOS conditions, and separate the real- time communication environments into different LOS cases. For each LOS case, we quantify the metrics as received signal strength indication, packet delivery rate, and communication latency. The results reveal that the communication reliability in urban expressways is very unstable because of the changing LOS conditions. This study provides a useful reference for the IEEE 802.11 p-based cooperative systems in urban expressways.

A GIS-Based Evaluation of Environmental Sensitivity for an urban expressway in Shenzhen, China

urban eco-environmental degradation is becoming inevitable due to the extensive urbanization, popula- tion growth, and socioeconomic development in China. One of the traffic arteries in Shenzhen is an urban expressway that is under construction and that runs across environmentally sensitive areas （ESAs）. The environmental pollution from urban expressways is critical, due to the characteristics of expressways such as high runoff coefficients, considerable contaminant accumulation, and complex pollutant ingredi- ents. ESAs are vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances and hence should be given special attention. In order to evaluate the environmental sensitivity along this urban expressway and minimize the influences of the ongoing road construction and future operation on the surrounding ecosystem, the environmental sensitivity of the relevant area was evaluated based on the application of a geographic information sys- tem （GIS）. A final ESA map was classified into four environmental sensitivity levels; this classification indicates that a large proportion of the expressway passes through areas of high sensitivity, representing 11.93 km or 52.3% of the total expressway, and more than 90% of the total expressway passes through ESAs. This study provides beneficial information for optimal layout schemes of initial rainfall runofftreatment facilities developed from low-impact development （LID） techniques in order to minimize the impact of polluted road runoff on the surrounding ecological environment.

Active lane management for intelligent connected vehicles in weaving areas of urban expressway

Purpose–This paper aims to use activeﬁne lane management methods to solve the problem of congestion in a weaving area and provide theoretical and technical support for trafﬁc control under the environment of intelligent connected vehicles(ICVs)in the ***/methodology/approach–By analyzing the trafﬁc capacities and trafﬁc behaviors of domestic and foreign weaving areas and combining them withﬁeld investigation,the paper proposes the active andﬁne lane management methods for ICVs to optimal driving behavior in a weaving *** VISSIM simulation of trafﬁcﬂow vehicle driving behavior in weaving areas of urban expressways was performed using research *** inﬂuence of lane-changing in advance on the weaving area was evaluated and a conﬂict avoidance area was established in the weaving *** activeﬁne lane management methods applied to a weaving area were veriﬁed for different ***–The results of the study indicate that ICVs complete their lane changes before they reach a weaving area,their time in the weaving area does not exceed the speciﬁed time and the delay of vehicles that pass through the weaving area ***/value–Based on the vehicle group behavior,this paper conducts a simulation study on the active trafﬁc management control-oriented to *** research results can optimize the management of lanes,improve the trafﬁc capacity of a weaving area and mitigate trafﬁc congestion on expressways.

Identification and characteristics analysis of bottlenecks on urban expressways based on floating car data

Identifying bottlenecks and analyzing their characteristics are important tasks to city traffic management *** the speed difference was proposed for the bottleneck identification in the existing research,the use of a secondary indicator has not been fully *** paper strived to develop a method to identify the bottleneck on expressways by using the massive floating car data(FCD)in ***,the speed characteristics of bottlenecks on expressway were analyzed based on the speed contour *** results indicated that there was a significant difference between speeds on the bottleneck and downstream links when a bottleneck was *** speed difference could indeed be used as the primary indicator to identify the ***,it was also shown that a sufficiently large speed difference does not necessitate an activation of a *** speed-at-capacity was then used as the secondary indicator to distinguish the real bottleneck from the non-bottleneck speed ***,a practical method for identifying the bottleneck on expressways was developed based on the speed difference and the ***,the method was applied to identifying the bottlenecks of the 3rd Outer Ring expressway in *** duration,affected distance,delay and cause were used to evaluate and analyze the bottlenecks.

Double-layer ramp-metering model for incident congestion on expressway

In order to ensure stable traffic capacity and avoid incident congestion, a double-layer ramp metering model is proposed in this paper, based on coordination control theory, to predict and control the traffic flow at each on-ramp, when there is incident congestion on the expressway. The function of the lower model is to recognize where the incident congestion exists, based on an adaptive neural net- work with inputs of traffic flow, velocity and density. The outputs of the lower model are the number of section where the congestion occurs, the number of ramp which should be controlled, and real-time traffic flow information. These outputs should be transmitted to the upper model. The function of the upper model is to design the ramp-metering strategy based on nonlinear theory. The outputs of the up- per model are a ramp-metering rate and traffic-flow state after ramp controlling on the expressway. The results of the simulation show that the double-layer ramp metering model could shorten the delay by about 25%, and the variance of the model results is 0. 002, which could certify the control strategy is equitable.

An integrated control method of on-ramp and correlated intersection is proposed in this article. The object is to minimize the average vehicle delay on-ramp and intersections based on the precondition that expressway is unblocked. ALINEA control approach is adopted for ramp study while cell transmission model was chosen and ameliorated for urban traffic. The demand of on-ramp is gotten by traffic state and all the control parameters of correlated intersection according to ameliorated model. With the integrated control method proposed in this article, the cycle and green time of intersection can be optimized dynamically to maximum the whole bendfit of expressway and surface street. The control approach have been illustrated via a simple case study, which shows that the integrated control approach proposed in this paper resulted in a reduction of 7.9% in the average vehicle delay compared to fixed-time control.
