Assessing parameter sensitivity in a University campus COVID-19 model with vaccinations

From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic,universities have experienced unique challenges due to their dual nature as a place of education and residence.Current research has explored non-pharmaceutical approaches to combating COVID-19,including representing in models different categories such as age groups.One key area not currently well represented in models is the effect of pharmaceutical preventative measures,specifically vaccinations,on COVID-19 spread on college campuses.There remain key questions on the sensitivity of COVID-19 infection rates on college campuses to potentially time-varying vaccine immunity.Here we introduce a compartment model that decomposes a campus population into constituent subpopulations and implements vaccinations with timevarying efficacy.We use this model to represent a campus population with both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals,and we analyze this model using two metrics of interest:maximum isolation population and symptomatic infection.We demonstrate a decrease in symptomatic infections occurs for vaccinated individuals when the frequency of testing for unvaccinated individuals is increased.We find that the number of symptomatic infections is insensitive to the frequency of testing of the unvaccinated subpopulation once about 80%or more of the population is vaccinated.Through a Sobol’global sensitivity analysis,we characterize the sensitivity of modeled infection rates to these uncertain parameters.We find that in order to manage symptomatic infections and the maximum isolation population campuses must minimize contact between infected and uninfected individuals,promote high vaccine protection at the beginning of the semester,and minimize the number of individuals developing symptoms.

Background: The University of Wisconsin (UW) and histidine-tryptophan-ketoglutarate (HTK) solutions are the two most frequently used liver graft preservation fluids. The present study aimed to compare their efficacy in end-stage hepatic alveolar echinococcosis patients who underwent ex-situ liver resection and autotransplantation (ELRA). Methods: A total of 81 patients received ELRA from August 2010 to March 2018. They were allocated into UW ( n = 48) and HTK groups ( n = 33) based on the type of solutions used. Demographic and operational data were retrospectively analyzed. Primary outcomes included 90-day mortality, incidence of early graft loss, primary dysfunction, and postoperative complications. Results: Demographic and operational characteristics were similarly distributed in the two groups. No statistically significant differences were observed with regard to 90-day mortality (12.77% vs. 12.12%) and early graft loss rate (8.51% vs. 9.09%) between the two groups. Patients in the UW and HTK groups showed a primary dysfunction rate of 27.66% and 27.27%, respectively. The UW group exhibited a higher incidence tendency of biliary complications, albeit with no statistical significance. Conclusions: This is the largest cohort study comparing the efficacy of the UW and HTK organ-preserving solutions in end-stage hepatic alveolar echinococcosis patients in ELRA settings. UW and HTK solutions presented similar efficacy and safety. A randomized clinical trial with larger scale is needed for further investigation in future clinical applications.

The progress of Chinese burn medicine from the Third Military Medical University—in memory of its pioneer,Professor Li Ao

Professor Li Ao was one of the founders of Chinese burn medicine and one of the most renowned doctors and researchers of burns in China. He established one of the Chinese earliest special departments for burns at Third Military Medical University (TMMU) in 1958. To memorialize Professor Li Ao on his 100th birthday in 2017 and introduce our extensive experience, it is our honor to briefly review the development and achievement of the Chinese burn medicine from TMMU. The epidemiology and outcomes of admitted burn patients since 1958 were reviewed. Furthermore, main achievements of basic and clinical research for the past roughly 60 years were presented. These achievements mainly included the Chinese Rule of Nine, fluid resuscitation protocol, experience in inhalation injury, wound treatment strategies, prevention and treatment of burn infections, nutrition therapy, organ support therapies, and rehabilitation. The progress shaped and enriched modern Chinese burn medicine and promoted the development of world burn medicine.

Are University Rankings Statistically Significant?A Comparison among Chinese Universities and with the USA

Purpose:Building on Leydesdorff,Bornmann,and Mingers(2019),we elaborate the differences between Tsinghua and Zhejiang University as an empirical example.We address the question of whether differences are statistically significant in the rankings of Chinese universities.We propose methods for measuring statistical significance among different universities within or among countries.Design/methodology/approach:Based on z-testing and overlapping confidence intervals,and using data about 205 Chinese universities included in the Leiden Rankings 2020,we argue that three main groups of Chinese research universities can be distinguished(low,middle,and high).Findings:When the sample of 205 Chinese universities is merged with the 197 US universities included in Leiden Rankings 2020,the results similarly indicate three main groups:low,middle,and high.Using this data(Leiden Rankings and Web of Science),the z-scores of the Chinese universities are significantly below those of the US universities albeit with some overlap.Research limitations:We show empirically that differences in ranking may be due to changes in the data,the models,or the modeling effects on the data.The scientometric groupings are not always stable when we use different methods.Practical implications:Differences among universities can be tested for their statistical significance.The statistics relativize the values of decimals in the rankings.One can operate with a scheme of low/middle/high in policy debates and leave the more fine-grained rankings of individual universities to operational management and local settings.Originality/value:In the discussion about the rankings of universities,the question of whether differences are statistically significant,has,in our opinion,insufficiently been addressed in research evaluations.

Preface to special issue on celebrating the 40th anniversary of Institute of Catalysis, Zhejiang University

In 1978, Professor Songshou Jin, a Chinese prestigious physical chemist, established Institute of Catalysis, Hangzhou University, the forerunner of Institute of Catalysis, Zhejiang University. In 1998, the current Institute of Catalysis was re-established through the merger of Zhejiang University and Hangzhou University et al. During the past forty years, researchers in Institute of Catalysis had always paid much attention to the combination of fundamental researches and industrial applications under the lead of Songshou Jin, Xiaoming Zheng, Weimin Lu, Hui Lou, and Yong Wang. The major research interest includes:(1) basic application research and exploitation of catalysts and catalytic process regarding conversion of biomass, methane, syngas and carbon dioxide;(2) development of catalysts and reaction apparatus for industrial hazardous gas, indoor gas, vehicle emissions and oil smoke from hotels and restaurants;(3) synthesis, characterization of functional materials and their applications in the green synthesis in fields of medicine, pesticide and fine chemical;(4) heterogeneous and homogeneous catalytic reaction kinetics and surface chemistry;(5) catalytic researches regarding military project.

Perception of Student Life as Promoting Mental Health and Well-Being. A Study of First-Year Students in a Norwegian University

In Norway,300,000 people attend higher education.Elsewhere in Europe,student numbers are also high.In Great Britain,1.9 million people attended higher education in the academic year 2018–2019.This is a substantial part of the population,and the mental health and well-being of students are of prime importance.Thefirst year as a University student is a transitional period characterized by significant changes and constitutes an essential fundament for students in their student life and later.An increasing number of students report having mental health problems to various degrees.Identifying the variety of perceptions of what may promote mental health and well-being is therefore of importance.This study aims to explore whetherfirst year students in higher education perceive student life as promoting their mental health and well-being.Twenty students were interviewed(n=20).Phenomenographic analysis was used to reveal variation in the students’perceptions.Two descriptive categories were constructed,“The need to belong”and“The need for support,”withfive conceptions:the importance of the sponsorship week,small groups as a place to belong,being patient,a supportive environment and the University as a facilitator.How a sense of belonging and a sense of support was achieved varied among the participants,and the solution for how to achieve this lies in the students themselves,the way the University organizes the programmes and how the students are met by the administration,lecturers and fellow students.
