A new type of disposable thin-film amperometric biosensor has been developed for measurement ofβ-hydroxybutyrate and total cholesterol in *** biosensor consists of two plain gold electrodes mounted on a Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) *** reagent solution contains bienzymes (cholesterol oxidase and cholesterol esterase for total cholesterol,β-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase and diaphorase forβ-hydroxybutyrate respectively) with mediator (ferricyanide) were absorption at the surface of electrodes coated by electrodepositing platinum *** presence of the mediator lowers the applied potential and eliminates the interference from other oxidizable species enhancing the sensitivity and selectivity of the biosensor without modifying the dynamic parameters of the *** enzymes stably retains in the matrices of platinum black film improving the performance of the mediated *** linearity is observed in the concentration range from 1.0×10^(-4) to 1.0×10^(-2) mM and 1.0×10^(-4) mM to 4.99×10^(-3) mM with sensitivity of 1.958μA/mM and 2.447μA/mM *** optimized biosensor exhibits excellent reproducibility and stability retaining more than 90% of its original activity over a period of one *** simple operation of the biosensor mass-produced at low cost is expected to find clinical application and homecare.

Comparison of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol for the prediction of thin-cap fibroatheroma determined by intravascular optical coherence tomography

Background The correlation among the ratios of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C/HDL-C), total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(TC/HDL-C) and thin-cap fibroatheroma has not yet been established. Methods It was a single center, retrospective observational study. In total, we recruited 421 patients(82.4% men;mean age 65.73 ± 10.44 years) with one culprit vessel which determined by intravascular optical coherence tomography(OCT). The thinnest-capped fibroatheroma(TCFA) group was defined as lipid contents in > 2 quadrants, with the thinnest fibrous cap measuring less than 65 μm. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were carried out to explore the relationship between lipoprotein ratios, TCFA and other characteristics of plaque. To compare different ratios, the area under curve(AUC) of receiver-operating characteristic(ROC) curve was assessed. Results OCT was performed in 421 patients(TCFA group(n = 109), non-TCFA group(n = 312)). LDL-C/HDL-C in the TCFA group was significantly higher than in the non-TCFA group(2.95 ± 1.20 vs. 2.43 ± 0.92, P < 0.05), as was TC/LDL in TCFA and non-TCFA group(4.57 ± 1.58 vs. 4.04 ± 1.13, P < 0.05). Both LDL-C/HDL-C(OR: 1.002(1.002-1.003), P < 0.05) and TC/HDL-C(OR: 1.001(1.001-1.004), P < 0.05) were considered independent factors for the prediction of TCFA according to the logistic regression. Based on the AUC comparison, LDL-C/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C had no significant difference statistically(LDL-C/HDL-C AUC: 0.63;TC/HDL-C AUC: 0.61;P = 0.10) for the prediction of TCFA. Conclusions LDL-C/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C could be the independent factors for predicting the presence of TCFA, indicating coronary plaque vulnerability in CAD patients. Moreover, TC/HDL-C also showed a comparative performance for the prediction of TCFA as LDL-C/HDL-C.

Relationship between apolipoprotein E gene polymorphism and total cholesterol level in patients with kidney diseases

AIM： To evaluate the association between apolipoprotein E （apoE） gene polymorphism and total cholesterol （TC） level in patients with kidney diseases. METHODS： A predefined literature search was performed to collect data from the electronic databases of PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library and eligible relevant studies reporting the association of apoE gene polymorphism with TC level in patients with kidney diseases were recruited for ***： Twenty-one studies were identifed for the analysis of association between apoE gene polymorphism and TC level in patients with kidney disease. Subjects with E3E4 had a higher TC than those with E3E3 [weighted mean differences （WMD）=2.14, P=0.01] and subjects with E2E3 had a lower TC than those with E3E3 （WMD=-1.93, P=0.01）. Subjects with ε2 had a lower TC than those with ε3 （ε2 vs ε3： WMD=-1.23, P=0.002; ε2 vs ε4： WMD=-2.77, P﹤0.0001） and subjects with 3 had a lower TC than those with 4 （WMD=-0.79, P=0.03）. CONCLUSION： Subjects with apoE E3E4 and ε4 had a higher TC level and subjects with apoE E2E3 and ε2 had a higher TC level in patients with kidney disease. However, more well-designed studies should be per-formed in the future to confrm these fndings.

Hypolipidemic activity of Tamarix articulata Vahl. in diabetic rats

OBJECTIVE： Tamarix articulata Vahl. （Tamaricaceae） is a medicinal plant commonly used in Morocco for the treatment of diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases. The objective of this study was to evaluate the hypolipidemic activity of aqueous extract of T. articulata in normal and streptozotocin （STZ）-induced diabetic rats. Phytochemical analysis as well as determination of polyphenol and flavonoid contents in the aqueous extract of T. articulata was performed. METHODS： The effects of oral administration of aqueous extract of T. articulata （5 mg/kg） on the plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol （HDL-c） concentrations were measured in both normal and STZ-induced diabetic rats. total phenolic content of the aqueous extract was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method. In addition, determination of flavonoid content was performed using colorimetric AICI3 method. RESULTS： A single oral administration in diabetic rats induced a significant increase in the HDL-c concentration after 6 h of treatment with T. articulata （5 mg/kg）. The results also demonstrated that the aqueous extract of T. articulata produced a significant decrease of serum total cholesterol after repeated oral administration in diabetic rats （P 〈 0.01）. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of T. articulata aqueous extract were equal to 102.50 mg of gallic acid equivalent per gram of extract and 54.83 mg of quercetin equivalent per gram of extract, respectively. CONCLUSION： According to preliminary phytochemical screening of the aerial part of T. articulata, severa classes of chemicals have been found, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, cyanidins （flavones, catechols）, mucilage, sesquiterpenes, terpenoids and carbohydrates. In conclusion, T. articulata exhibits a hypolipidemic effect in diabetic rats and its beneficial role as hypolipidemic agent should be evaluated in clinical studies.

Meta-analysis of risk factors associated with atherosclerosis in patients with Kawasaki disease

Background:Kawasaki disease(KD)has now become the leading cause of acquired heart disease among children in developed *** study investigated whether patients with KD have an increased risk of ***:Electronic databases,including PubMed,Embase and Springer link,were searched through June 1,2015,for eligible *** were included when they met the following criteria:1)an observational study focusing on evaluating the risk factors for atherosclerosis in patients with KD;2)KD was diagnosed clinically according to the Japan Kawasaki Disease Research Committee or American Heart Association's diagnostic criteria;3)the study subjects were KD patients without coronary heart disease or related cardiovascular disease(KD group)and non-KD patients as control(control group),and 4)investigation of important atherosclerosis risk factors,total cholesterol(TC),low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL),triglycerides(TG),systolic blood pressure(SBP),and fl owmediated dilatation(FMD).The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa *** difference(MD)and relative risk(RR)and corresponding 95%confidence intervals(CI)were used to calculate the pooled ***:Sixteen studies were included with a total of 870 patients,including 421 KD patients and 449 non-KD *** in TG and SBP between KD patients and controls were not signifi cant;in contrast,TC and LDL levels were significantly higher in KD patients than the controls,whereas FMD in the KD patients was signifi cantly ***:KD patients may have an increased risk of developing atherosclerosis.

Impact of interferon-free antivirus therapy on lipid profiles in patients with chronic hepatitis C genotype 1b

AIM To investigate the influence of interferon-free antivirus therapy on lipid profiles in chronic hepatitis C virus genotype 1b(HCV1b) *** Interferon-free antiviral agents were used to treat 276 patients with chronic HCV1 b infection, and changes in serum lipids of those who achieved sustained virologic response(SVR) were examined. The treatment regimen included 24 wk of daclatasvir plus asunaprevir(DCV + ASV) or 12 wk of sofosbuvir plus ledipasvir(SOF + LDV). SVR was achieved in 121(85.8%) of 141 patients treated with DCV + ASV and 132(97.8%) of 135 patients treated with SOF + LDV. In the two patient groups(DCV + ASV-SVR and SOF + LDV-SVR), serum total cholesterol(TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), and triglycerides were measured at baseline during treatment and at 4 and 12 wk after treatment. Then, longitudinal changes in lipid profiles were *** Serum levels of TC, LDL-C, and HDL-C were significantly increased throughout the observation period in both the DCV + ASV-SVR and SOF + LDV-SVR groups. During antivirus treatment, the increases in TC and LDL-C were significantly greater in the SOF + LDVSVR group than in the DCV + ASV-SVR group(P cholesterol significantly increased during SOF + LDV treatment. After treatment, HCV elimination was associated with a similar increase in cholesterol regardless of the therapy protocol.

Aerobic Training Impacts on Blood cholesterol of Women with Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes mellitus has been identified as a major complication of pregnancies and has remained a major cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality, as well as maternal morbidity. Lipid abnormalities significantly contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other morbidities in diabetics. One of the benefits of regular exercise is a reduction in cardiovascular risk factors through the improvement of the lipid profile and reduction of hypertension. This study investigated the effect of aerobic training on the cholesterol level of women with gestational diabetes. Thirty-four (34) women who met the inclusion criteria for this study were randomized into Exercise and Control groups. Exercise group participated in structured exercise programme, 3 sessions a week for 8 weeks with each session lasting a maximum of 60 minutes while the Control group did not participate in any form of structured exercise programme for the period of the study. Data were collected at baseline, at 4th week and at 8th week into the exercise programme. Thirty (30) of the participants completed the study and so only their data were analysed using Repeated Measure ANOVA and Independent t-test. The result showed significant changes in the total cholesterol (F[2, 28]) = 268.316, P = 0.001), of the Exercise group compared to the control. Independent t-test used to compare the lipid profile of the Experimental and Control groups showed significant difference between the means of the 2 groups at week 4 (total cholesterol (t(28) 2.164, P = 0.039, triglyceride [t(28) 3.146 P =
