Applied anatomy of the submental island flap and its clinical application in the repair of defects following hypopharyngeal carcinoma resection

Objective: To explore the feasibility of the submental island flap in the repair of hypopharyngeal ***: We collected wet specimens of fresh cadaveric heads from the Han Chinese adult population for applied anatomy of the submental island flap, and followed five patients with pyriform sinus carcinoma after reconstruction surgery using submental island ***: We found that the average length and width of the submental island flaps were (65.20 ± 11.69) mm and (46.70 ± 6.59) mm, *** skin flap in all five patients survived after surgery, and tracheal tubes and gastric tubes were removed 7-36 days after *** were followed up for 24-42 months, pharyngeal flaps grew well, and speech and swallowing functions were ***: The submental island flap is a preferred material for the repair of hypopharyngeal defects after hypopharyngeal carcinoma resection, because of good blood supply, easy harvesting, and high survival rate.

Purpose/Background:submental artery perforator flap(SAPF) is a novel option for the intraoral reconstruction in recent years. Herein, we estimated the surgical outcomes and oncological safety of SAPF reconstruction in patients with T2-T3 oral cavity cancer Materials and Methods:Case series were derived from our institutional clinical oncologic databases. Fiftyone SAPFs, thirty SIFs and seventy-four ALTPFs for the intraoral reconstructions of T2-T3 oral cancer were reviewed between March 2015 to May 2018. We performed comparative assessments on variables of the surgical outcome and oncological safety among three cohorts.

Background:Verrucous carcinoma of bilateral buccal mucosa is extremely rare. And there has been no previous report on use of bilateral submental artery island flaps for reconstruction of buccal defects on both sides in one oral cancer ***:we present a case with verrucous carcinoma of bilateral buccal mucosa who underwent wide excision of tumor and reconstruction with bilateral submental artery island flaps(SIF). A 9 cm×4.5 cm SIF was harvested to reconstruct the left buccal mucosa defect, and a 4 cm×4.5 cm SIF was used to reconstruct the other side buccal mucosa defect.
