Summary What is already known about this topic?Hong Kong Special Administrative Region(SAR),China and Singapore are both facing considerable Omicron variant epidemic.However,the overwhelmed medical system and high case fatality ratio(CFR)just occurred in Hong Kong SAR,China but not in Singapore.What is added by this report?The low vaccination coverage in Hong Kong SAR,China,especially among the older adults,is shown to be a primary reason of its recent high CFR.What are the implications for public health practice?Facing the potential epidemic risk,non-vaccinated,non-fully-vaccinated,and non-booster-vaccinated people in China,especially the elderly,should get any type of accessible vaccine,which could save lives when the infection unfortunately befalls.

Purpose:This article presents a scoping review of the internationally published research on the early childhood curriculum(ECC)reforms,policies,measures,and effectiveness in China and Singapore,to explore the joint and interactive effects of globalization and localization in ECC in twodifferent contexts.Design/Approach/Methods:We reviewed and analyzed the chosen studies with a multilevel curriculum framework:formal curriculum,perceived curriculum,operational curriculum,and curriculum ideology.Findings:The synthesis of evidence indicated that in both China and Singapore(l)a constructivist orientation is relied upon to construct the formal curricula;(2)the perceived curricula have been heavily influenced by the indigenous values and contextual realities;and(3)the Western ideology embedded in the formal curricula has not been realized,as reflected in the operational curricula.Originality/Value:The phenomenon of curriculum hybridization has been scrutinized to explain these findings regarding curriculum ideologies and practices.As confirmed by the findings and theoretical explanations,the 3CAPs framework(culturally,contextually,and child-individually appropriate practices)can be employed to guide the development of ECC in policies and practices.

The experience of transition from nursing students to newly graduated registered nurses in Singapore

Objectives:To investigate the experience of newly graduated registered nurses(NGRNs)in Singapore following their initial 6-12 months of transition from nursing student to registered nurse.Methods:This mixed-methods study consisted of two phases.In the first phase,data were collected via the administration of the online survey to 30 NGRNs.The questionnaire contained 42 items of the fourpoint Likert scale survey.In the second phase,a focus group interview was conducted with 5 NGRNs to gather complementary information regarding the major findings from the first phase.Results:The survey revealed despite most NGRNs(80%)in this study expressed overall satisfied with their transition,the item score was(2.97±0.61)out of 4,the majority(83.3%)also perceived their transition to professional practice being stressful,the item score was(3.07±0.74)out of 4.Three themes emerged from the interview,'personal transition experience','professional transition experience',and'organizational transition experience',which are entwined to construct overall NGRNs'transition experiences.Conclusions:This study reaffirms the theory-practice gap phenomenon.This signifies the need for closer collaboration between educational,healthcare industry and regulatory stakeholders to examine and address factors that influence their transition experience to better support them for workforce readiness.

Multi-chain Fudan-CCDC model for COVID-19—a revisit to Singapore's case

Background:COVID-19 has been impacting on the whole world critically and constantly since late December 2019.Rapidly increasing infections has raised intense worldwide attention.How to model the evolution of COVID-19 effectively and efficiently is of great significance for prevention and control.Methods:We propose the multi-chain Fudan-CCDC model based on the original single-chain model in[Shao et al.2020]to describe the evolution of COVID-19 in Singapore.Multi-chains can be considered as the superposition of several single chains with different characteristics.We identify the parameters of models by minimizing the penalty function.Results:The numerical simulation results exhibit the multi-chain model performs well on data fitting.Though unsteady the increments are,they could still fall within the range of±30%fluctuation from simulation results.Conclusion:The multi-chain Fudan-CCDC model provides an effective way to early detect the appearance of imported infectors and super spreaders and forecast a second outbreak.It can also explain the data from those countries where the single-chain model shows deviation from the data.

While there are many online data dashboards on COVID-19,there are few analytics available to the public and non-epidemiologists to help them gain a deeper insight into the COVID-19 pandemic and evaluate the effectiveness of social intervention measures.To address the issue,this study describes the methods underlying the development of a realtime,data-driven online Epidemic Calculator for tracking COVID-19 growth parameters.From publicly available infection case and death data,the calculator is used to estimate the effective reproduction number,final epidemic size,and death toll.As a case study,we analyzed the results for Singapore during the"Circuit Breaker"period from April 7,2020 to the end of May 2020.The calculator shows that the stringent measures imposed have an immediate effect of rapidly slowing down the spread of the coronavirus.After about two weeks,the effective reproduction number reduced to about 1.0.Since then,the number has been fluctuating around 1.0 for more than a month.The COVID-19 Epidemic Calculator is available in the form of an online Google Sheet and the results are presented as Tableau Public dashboards at www.***.one.By making the calculator readily accessible online,the public can have a tool to assess the effectiveness of measures to control the pandemic meaningfully.

Objective::The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate a set of psychometrically equivalent disyllabic wordlist(SC-10)in Singapore Mandarin for clinical use.Study design::A preliminary set of 1000 words were obtained from a dictionary of frequently used words by Singapore students.Ten native judges rate the familiarity level of each word.This is followed by a face-to-face public survey to rank the shortlisted word set from most to least familiar.The final 108 disyllabic words were recorded by a native female talker.20 normal hearing subjects were used to obtain the percentage of correct word recognition at 24 intensity levels(-10 dB HL to 26 dB HL in 2 dB increment).Psychometric function slopes were calculated for each word.100 words were eventually chosen and assigned into ten 10-word lists based on a psychometric balancing protocol.Minor digital adjustments were made to the intensity of each wordlist to improve their auditory homogeneity.Results::The calculated regression slopes in the psychometric functions for the ten lists are between 8.0 and 9.8%/dB.Single factor ANOVA analysis showed no significant difference in both the mean intensity required to obtain 50%recognition score(f=0.109,df=9,p=0.999)and the slopes of the psychometric functions(f=0.078,df=9,p=0.999)between the ten word lists.List validation on 25 normal hearing participants(PTA=11.0 dB HL,SD=4.3)showed a mean speech recognition threshold(SRT)of 9.3 dB HL(SD=3.5)and regression slope of 8.395%/dB.Quadratic regression analysis showed a positive correlation(r^(2)=0.923)between presentation level and word recognition score(WRS).The difference between PTA and SRT of each subject all fall within the clinically acceptable difference of 10 dB HL.Test-retest reliability,carried out on 20 subjects at three levels(SRT-5,SRT,and SRT+5 dB),showed no significance difference between word recognition score when the same participant is tested again at the same intensity level using a different wordlist.Conclusion::All in all,it shows that the SC-10 speech m

Reuse of abandoned or underused historic buildings and sites has become an increasing global trend within the built environment in the past two decades(Bullen and Love 2011;Gravagnuolo et al.2017).Bypassing the wasteful processes of demolition and new construction,adaptive reuse prolongs the lifespan of cultural heritage,contributes to environmental sustainability and enhances urban livability(Ikiz Kaya et al.2021).Focusing on three Asian global cities—Hong Kong,Shanghai and Singapore,the book of Asian Revitalization:Adaptive Reuse in Hong Kong,Shanghai,and Singapore,edited by Cummer and DiStefano,provides a needed analysis of adaptive reuse trends,policies and practices in Asian context.

Since modern Singapore was founded in 1819,different generations of Chinese immigrants have come to live there.The intellectuals among them established literary societies and composed classical Chinese poetry.Different generations of poets wrote about Singapore in different ways.Sojourner poets wrote about Nanyang(a Chinese word referring to Southeast Asia in general,and Malaya and Singapore in particular)as a foreign land;their poetry reflected a strong sense of homesickness.In contrast,the naturalized first-generation and localized poets considered Nanyang their native land;their poetry focused more on Singaporean stories and experiences.Classical Chinese poetry by Chinese immigrants in Singapore,thus,has its own characteristics even as it draws on the essence of Chinese cultural tradition.

BACKGROUND:Singapore’s status as a first world island city-state which relies chiefly on food imports to meet the demand for consumption presents unique challenges in terms of microbial food safety and quality.Despite the efforts of the Ministry of Health in Singapore,in conjunction with the Agri-Food&Veterinary Authority of Singapore and the National Environment Agency actively collaborate together to promote safety in Singapore,foodborne diseases are still a major public health issue.OBJECTIVE:The aim of the review was to summarize the various foodborne diseases reported in Singapore in the past few years as well as to give an account of all the currently available microbiological findings indicating safety and quality of poultry,vegetables,fruits,and seafood sold in Singapore.
