Objective: To investigate the association of serum lipids and other risk factors with diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Chinese type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: Five hundred and twenty-three type 2 diabetic patients underwent ophthalmic examination by experienced retinal specialists to assess their DR. serum lipids, including triglycerides, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), were measured using Roche automated clinical chemistry analyzers. The concentration of very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDLC) was calculated based on total cholesterol, HDLC and LDLC. Hyperlipidemia was defined as a total cholesterol concentration of 6.2 mmol/L or higher or the use of lipid-lowering medications. The association of risk factors with any DR or proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) was assessed using the odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI), calculated from logistic regression models. Results: In multivariate logistic regression models, hyperlipidemia (OR=2.39, 95% CI: 1.02-5.66), higher VLDLC (OR=1.59, 95% CI: 1.14-2.23), and higher triglyceride (OR=1.18, 95% CI: 1.03-1.37) were associated with increased risk of DR. A longer diabetic duration was associated with increased risk of DR (Pserum creatinine (P=0.01) were independently associated with increased risk of DR, and female gender was associated with increased risk of PDR (P=0.03). Conclusions: Among Chinese type 2 diabetic patients, hyperlipidemia, higher VLDLC, and higher triglyceride were independently associated with increased risk of DR, suggesting control of serum lipids may decrease the risk of DR.

Background: The etiology of ovarian cancer is not well-understood;numerous metabolomics profiling, epidemiological, and hospital-based case control studies have associated abnormal levels of blood glucose and serum lipids with the risk and the prognosis of various types of cancers including ovarian cancer. The association between the risk of the incidence of ovarian cancer and the alterations in the levels of blood glucose and serum lipids is not well defined. Objective: In this study we aimed to compare the levels of blood glucose, triacylglycerols, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in patients with different stages of ovarian cancer and healthy controls to determine how they relate to the risk and prognosis of ovarian cancer. Methodology: In a case-control cross sectional study, we enrolled ninety-nine Sudanese women, diagnosed with ovarian cancer but had not received any kind of treatment as the study group, and a control group of forty-one age-matched, apparently healthy women. The patients were classified according to the International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists staging system into two groups: early stages (stage I & II) and late stages (stages III & IV). Blood glucose and serum lipids;triacylglycerols, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were determined by enzymatic colorimetric methods using commercially available analytical kits. The IBM SPSS version 20 software was used for statistical analysis. A Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparison of the median concentrations of blood glucose, triacylglycerols, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the study groups. 目的 To examine associations between serum lipids and age related macular degeneration(AMD).方法 A systematic search of the Pub Med,EMBASE and ISI web of science databases was used to identify eligible published literatures without language restrictions up to January,*** relative ratios(RRs)and 95%CIs were estimated using fixed-effects model or random-effects model.结果 After ineligible studies were excluded,23 articles(21 studies)including 198,115 participants,were identified in this *** pooled relative ratio of HDL-C was 1.19(95%confidence interval 1.04 to 1.35)for an increment of per 1 mmol/l,with significant heterogeneity(I2=63.2%,P<0.001).This factor was also significantly associated with an increased risk of early AMD(RR,1.16;95%CI,1.01 to 1.31;I2=54.4%;P=0.008).An inverse association was observed between TC,LDL and TG levels with early and any AMD(early AMD:OR ranging from 0.91 to 0.95;any AMD:OR ranging from 0.91 to 0.94;all P<0.05).结论 AMD was related to high HDL concentration,whereas the elderly patients with high TC,LDL and TG concentrations may be at decreased risk for this disease.

Objective: To compare the effects of high-monounsaturated(MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA) against the metabolic disorders elicited by a high-cholesterol diet(HC) in rats. Methods: Using in vivo dietary manipulation, rats were fed with different diets containing 4% soybean oil(cholesterol free diet) and 1% HC containing 12% olive oil(HC+OO) enriched with MUFA and 12% sunflower oil(HC+SO) enriched with PUFA for 60 d. serum lipid levels and hepatic steatosis were evaluated after the treatment period. Results: Comparatively, rats treated with HC+OO diet experienced a decrease in the serum LDL-C, VLDL-C and CT levels compared to those fed with HC+SO diet(Pserum levels in the animals treated with HC+OO diet can be caused by the delay in the FA release to the blood.

Association of alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 genetic polymorphisms with serum lipid profile: meta-analysis of mendelian randomisation studies

Background Alcohol dehydrogenase （ADH） and aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 （ALDH2） are the key en- zymes for alcohol metabolism. Several genetic studies have investigated the association between ADH and ALDH2 genetic polymorphisms and serum lipid profile （SLP）, however, the results were inconsistent. Methods Fourteen articles involving 27,917 participants were included in this meta-analysis. Weighted mean difference （WMD） and 95% confidence intervals （CIs） were presented using random effects model. Publication bias was evaluated by funnel plot and Begg＇s test. In addition, to further explore the heterogeneity, subgroup analysis were performed. Results Overall, there was no association between ADH genetic polymorphisms and SLP with no regard for drinking status. However, compared with ALDH2 wild homozygous genotype, ALDH2 mutant genotypes were associated with significant decrease in serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol （HDL- C）（WMD -1.80 mg/dL, 95% CI -1.88 to -1.72, P 〈 0.001） and total cholesterol （TC） levels （WMD -1.]0 mg/dL, 95% CI -1.59 to -0.62, P 〈 0.001）, and significant increase in serum low density lipoprotein choles- terol （LDL-C） level （WMD 0.30 mg/dL, 95% CI 0.18 to 0.43, P 〈 0.001）. Although there was no significant difference in serum triglyceride level in the overall population, subgroup analysis revealed that compared with ALDH2 ＊ 1 wild homozygote, ALDH2 ＊ 2 allele displayed a significant difference in serum triglyceride level between the female and male （female： WMD 1.69 mg/dl, 95% CI 1.08 to 2.30, P 〈 0.001; male： WMD -6.42 mg/dL, 95% CI -12.15 to -0.68, P = 0.028）. Conclusion ADH genetic polymorphism has no association with SLP, regardless of sex category and drinking status. ALDH2 genetic polymorphism has slight association with HDL-C, LDL-C and TC levels and sex-specific association with serum triglyceride level. Cross-Sectional Height-Specific Changes in serum Lipid Concentrations in Cameroon Children

Background: Information on the relationship between height and changes in serum lipids in children is scarce in Cameroon. The aim of this study is to determine prevalence of dyslipidemia with respect to age and gender and assess the association between height increase and serum lipid changes in Cameroon children. Methods: This hospital-based cross-sectional analysis included 472 boys and 534 girls between the ages of 5 and 16 years. Body height, weight, and waist circumference (WC) of children were measured and z-scores calculated. Total cholesterol-TC, triglycerides-TG, low density lipoprotein cholesterol-LDL-C and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol-HDL-C concentrations in fasting blood samples were determined by enzymatic method using an automated clinical chemistry analyzer (RX Monaco, UK). Children were divided into increasing quartiles of height z-score. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to compare mean lipid concentrations across quartiles of height z-score after controlling for age, gender, body weight, WC and fasting blood glucose. Results: The prevalence of elevated TC and LDL-C were respectively 18.5% and 19.2% higher in girls than boys. Also, the prevalence of elevated TC and TG was highest among younger (5- to 9-year-old) girls and boys respectively. There was a significant decrease in mean TC (168.8 to 127.2 mg/dl;p p = 0.019) and LDL-C (91.1 to 69.4 mg/dl;p = 0.018) in boys;and a significant decrease in mean TC (171.2 to 144.7 mg/dl;p = 0.004) and HDL-C (62.8 to 28.7 mg/dl;p p = 0.053) and the decrease in TG (p = 0.211) and LDL-C (p = 0.732) in girls with increasing height were not significant. Conclusion: serum lipids decreased with increasing height after controlling for different variables. This study indicates that short children have higher serum lipid concentrations and this may increase the risk of lipid disorders, which may persist into adulthood.

Preoperative serum lipid profile and outcome in nonmetastatic colorectal cancer

Objective: A large portion of non-metastatic colorectal cancers (non-mCRCs) recur after curative surgery. In addition to the traditional tumor-related factors, host-related factors are also required to accurately predict prognosis. A few studies have shown an association between the serum lipid profile and the survival and treatment response of patients with colorectal cancer. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the prognostic significance of the preoperative serum lipid profile [total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)] in patients with non-mCRC treated with curative surgery. The Spearman rank correlation test was used to analyze associations between lipid levels and categorical variables. Lipid levels were modeled as four equal-sized quartiles based on the distribution among the whole cohort. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to estimate survival probabilities, and the log-rank test was used to detect differences between them. Multivariate fractional polynomial (MFP) analysis was used to model any non-linear effects and avoid categorization. To evaluate the added prognostic value of lipids, the predictive power of two models (with and without lipids as covariates) was compared by using Harrell's C-statistic and the Akaike information criterion (AIC). Results: A total of 266 patients with non-mCRC were enrolled in the present study. Spearman rank correlation test showed that TG levels inversely correlated with N stage (r ? ?0.20, P ? 0.00) and Tumor-Node-Metastasis (TNM) stage (r ? ?0.19, P ? 0.00). HDL-C levels positively correlated with perineural invasion (PNI) (r ? 0.15, P ? 0.02), and LDL-C levels inversely correlated with lymphovascular invasion (LVI) (r ? ?0.12, P ? 0.04).
