PM_(2.5)characterization of primary and secondary organic aerosols in two urban-industrial areas in the East Mediterranean

Primary and secondary organic aerosols in PM_(2.5)were investigated over a one-year campaign at Zouk Mikael and Fiaa,*** n-alkanes concentrations were quite similar at both sites(26-29 ng/m^(3))and mainly explained by anthropogenic emissions rather than natural *** concentrations of total Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons(PAHs)were nearly three times higher at Zouk Mikael(2.56 ng/m^(3))compared to Fiaa(0.95 ng/m^(3)),especially for indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene linked to the presence of the power plant.A characteristic indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene/(indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene+benzo[g,h,i]perylene)ratio in the range0.8-1.0 was determined for heavy fuel oil combustion from the power *** acids and hopanes were also investigated and were assigned to cooking activities and vehicular emissions *** were identified for the first time in Lebanon with high concentrations at Zouk and Fiaa(106.88 and 97.68 ng/m^(3) respectively).Moreover,the biogenic secondary aerosols revealed higher concentrations in *** total terpene concentration varied between 131 ng/m^(3) at Zouk Mikael in winter to 469 ng/m3 at Fiaa in ***,the concentrations of the dicarboxylic acids especially for adipic and phthalic acids were more influenced by anthropogenic *** analysis of molecular markers and diagnostic ratios indicated that the sites were strongly affected by anthropogenic sources such as waste open burning,diesel private generators,cooking activities,road transport,power plant,and industrial ***,results showed different pattern during winter and summer ***,higher concentrations of biogenic markers were clearly encountered during the summer period.

Photodegradation technology has been widely applied in the purification of industrial aromatic ***,whether this technology efficiently removes the pollutants to prevent secondary pollution and health risk is still ***,the photodegradation processes of three xylenes were compared under designed reaction atmospheres and light *** lamp showed poor photodegradation ability toward xylenes,no matter in N_(2) or N_(2)+O_(2)system,while much higher photodegradation performance of xylenes were obtained under ultraviolet(UV)and vacuum ultraviolet(VUV)irradiation,especially in N_(2)+O_(2)+VUV system,where 97.9%of m-xylene,99.0%of o-xylene or 87.5%of p-xylene with the initial concentration of 860 mg/m^(3) was removed within 240 *** xylenes underwent three processes of photo-isomerization,photodecomposition and photo-oxidation to produce intermediates of aromatics,alkanes and *** them,the photo-isomerization products showed the highest concentration percentage(e.g.,≥50%in o-xylene system),confirming that photo-isomerization reaction was the dominated photodegradation process of ***,these isomerized products not only contributed about 97%and91%to the formation potential of O3(OFP)and secondary organic aerosols(SOAFP),but also displayed obvious non-carcinogenic risk,although one of photodecomposition product—benzene showed the highest occupational exposure ***,the secondary pollution and health risks of photodegradation products of xylenes were non-ignorable,although the OFP,SOAFP and health risks of the generated products reduced at least 4.5 times in comparison with that of the degraded *** findings are helpful for the appropriate application of this technology in the purification of industrial organic waste gas.

Chemical composition and size distribution of secondary organic aerosol formed from the photooxidation of isoprene

Photooxidation of isoprene leads to the formation of secondary organic aerosol （SOA）. In this study, the chemical composition of SOA formed from OH-initiated photooxidation of isoprene has been investigated with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry （GC/MS） and a home-made aerosol time-of-fiight mass spectrometer. Sampling particles generated in a home-made smog chamber. The size distribution of SOA particles was detected by a TSI 3321 aerodynamic particle size spectrometer in real time. Results showed that SOA created by isoprene photooxidation was predominantly in the form of fine particles, which have diameters less than 2.5 μm. The obtained mass spectra of individual particles show that products of the OH-initiated oxidation of isoprene contain methyl vinyl ketone, methacrolein, formaldehyde, and some other hydroxycarbonyls. The possible reaction mechanisms leading to these products were also discussed.

secondary organic aerosols(SOA) are important organic constituents in *** better understand the atmospheric abundances,seasonal variations,influencing factors of SOA in Pearl River Delta region,a one-year campaign was conducted in rural Guangzhou to collect fine particulate matter(PM) samples from March 2012 to February *** SOA tracers in PM have been analyzed by gas chromatography-mass *** and Monoterpene SOA tracers were significantly higher in summer and autumn but much lower in winter and spring,showing the influence of temperature on emission ***,higher levels of atmospheric oxidants(NOx and ozone) could lead to an enhancement of monoterpene SOA concentrations in autumn and ***,toluene and naphthalene SOA tracers showed higher levels in autumn and *** episodic periods with high SOA loadings were investigated and the influence of the factors such as temperature,air pollutants and regional sources on SOA formation was discussed.

PM2.5 aerosol sampling for collection of 24 h samples was carried out every day from Qinghai Lake（3200m a.s.l.）, a remote continental site in the northeastern part of Tibetan Plateau from July to August 2010. To better understand the production of water-soluble organic aerosols, the samples were analyzed for water-soluble dicarboxylic acids（C2-C11） and related compounds（ketocarboxylic acids and α-dicarbonyals）, as well as organic carbon（OC）, elemental carbon（EC）, water-soluble organic carbon（WSOC）, and water-soluble inorganic ions. Distributions of dicarboxylic acids and related compounds were characterized by a predominance of oxalic acid（29.3 – 347.6 ng m-3, 148.2 ± 83.9 ng m-3） followed by malonic（9.3 – 77.6 ng m-3, 27.2 ± 15.5 ng m-3） and succinic（3.6 – 29.3 ng m-3, 14.5 ± 8.0 ng m-3） acids. The average contributions of diacids, ketoacids and dicarbonyls to WSOC were 44.1%, 1.3%, and 0.4 %, respectively. They were several times higher than those reported in north-western cities from which air masses were transported to the Qinghai Lake, indicating an importance of photochemical processing of aerosols during a long-range transport. The diacids/WSOC and C9/diacids ratios were higher than those reported previously in different atmosphere aerosols, which may indicate that the local aerosols were chiefly influenced by the biomass burning（herbages and dung） and photochemical oxidations were enhanced because of the stronger solar radiation. This study demonstrated that diacids were primarily produced by the secondary photochemical oxidation of organic pollutants and ω-oxoacids were likely intermediates to the production of dicarboxylic acids.
