Based on a survey of migrants in 12 cities across four major urbanizing areas in China,this paper empirically studies the impact of the size of individual social networks on the migrants'*** controlling for potential endogeneity using an instrumental variable approach,our empirical results from 2SLS estimation provides no evidence for significant average causal effect of network size on wage.A further exploration of quantile regression analysis with endogeneity issue managed by using the control function approach shows that a significant positive network size effect can only be found in the low-income end.

Leading the rural-urban migration is the key to solving the problem of imbalanced urban structure in China; in which the migration will of the rural-urban migrants should not be ignored, especially the permanent will of migration. This paper uses the ratio of rent to income as an indicator of the housing affordability of rural-urban migrants, empirically analyzes the impact of housing affordability on the permanent migration will of rural-urban migrants. It was found that the impact of rent-income ratio is significant and there exists a turning point. Before the point, the ratio is positively correlated with the permanent migration will of rural migrants; whereas after the turning point, they are negatively correlated. Before that point, relative to income of rural migrants, the rents are still bearable and the ratio does not have a negative effect on the migration will, which explains why a large number of rural-urban migrants tend to choose the large-sized cities with higher housing prices, rather than the small and medium-sized cities or small towns with lower housing prices.

The massive scale of new-generation rural-urban migrants in China has attracted extensive scholarly attention in recent *** previous studies on China’s rural migrant workers focus on migrants’settlement intentions,migrants’family migration decision-making and the intergenerational differences between the old-generation migrants and new-generation migrants are *** on the data of the 2017 China migrants Dynamic Survey,this paper adopts a multilevel logistic regression approach to explore family and destination factors influencing the family migration decisions of China’s new generation of rural migrant *** empirical results reveal that both the migrants’family and destination attributes significantly influence their family migration *** demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the family have been pivotal factors underlying the family migration decision of China’s new generation rural-urban migrants,while 16.9%of the chances are explained by between-destination ***-employed migrants with housing properties in host cities,long migration duration and high-income levels are more likely to migrate with their family ***,the possibility of family migration is found to be significantly and negatively correlated with the age,education level,number of children and inter-provincial mobility of the new generation of migrant *** addition,new-generation rural-urban migrants’family migration is more likely to be found in cities with service-oriented industry structures,better environmental quality,and higher hukou barriers which is possibly related to more job *** research findings not only complement the existing literature on China’s new generation of rural urban migrants,but also have important policy implications for reforming the hukou system and enhancing social integration of the rural-to-urban migrant population.

Digital Revolution and Job Quality of Lower Class Workers: Quasi-experimental Evidence from the Broadband China Program

This study examines the impact of the digital revolution on the job quality of workers with a specific focus on those at the lowest end of the spectrum in China's domestic labor market. Leveraging exogenous timing variations that result from the implementation of the Broadband China Program across different cities, it provides quasi-experimental evidence concerning the effects of the digital revolution on the job quality of lower class workers, particularly rural–urban migrant workers. Using data from China migrants Dynamic Survey, this study reveals that migrants' comprehensive job quality index increased by 0.0138 (5.33 percent), and its component indices experienced positive effects after the Broadband China Program was implemented. This study also investigates heterogeneous policy treatment effects among workers with diverse demographic and occupational characteristics. Underlying mechanisms are considered, including positive macroeconomic shocks, increased social interactions, and Internet use. In particular, migrants' attitudes toward local settlement became more positive, suggesting that the positive effects of the digital revolution on livelihood lasted for some time. Taking China as an example, this study contributes valuable empirical evidence of how the digital revolution can affect lower class workers' employment or living conditions in a developing country. Related policy implications are also considered.

农民工多借助于以亲缘、地缘等为纽带的社会网络实现就业，借助于社会网络实现就业是否会影响农民工的人力资本积累?本文从社会网络视角，通过构建理论模型和实证分析对其进行研究。本文首先构建一个社会网络影响农民工人力资本投资决策的理论模型，揭示了通过社会网络实现就业对农民工人力资本积累的影响机理。然后采用中国城乡流动人口数据，实证检验了借助社会网络实现就业对农民工进城之后人力资本投资的影响，并利用条件混合过程估计法，对模型中所存在的潜在内生性进行了处理。本文研究发现，借助于社会网络实现就业会显著降低农民工人力资本投资的概率。机制分析表明，社会网络所具有的缩短搜寻时间及提高工作搜寻效率的作用，是借助社会网络实现就业的农民工缺乏进行人力资本投资动力的重要原因。本文的研究表明，应正确认识社会网络对农民工人力资本积累或自身能力发展的影响，制定有效的激励政策以调动农民工进行培训、学历教育等人力资本投资的积极性。

农民工是中国改革开放以来伴随着工业化、城市化、现代化进程而出现的一个规模庞大的特殊群体，它正在由中国发展进步的重要推进力量向新时期必须应对的重大挑战转化。农民工问题直接牵涉到亿万农民工及其家属的切身利益，是一个包含了经济利益、社会权益、政治权力及文化融洽、精神和谐等内容的综合性问题。这一问题的存在与发展变化，正在全方位地影响着中国新型工业化、城市化、现代化的进程，从而迫切要求国家通过调整制度安排及政策措施来加以解决。妥善解决农民工问题，既是能否最终解决好“三农”问题的关键所在，也是能否加速推进中国工业化、城市化和现代化进程的关键所在。应该将解决农民工问题作为我国未来十年发展中的头等大事，采取统筹考虑、综合协调、近中长期目标相结合的思路，稳妥有序地为农民工提供融入工业化、城市化进程的机会，最终促使整个社会和谐发展。

积极推动农业转移人口落户城镇是新型城镇化建设的重点任务。随着多数流入地城市落户门槛的降低和人口流动模式的改变，农业转移人口户籍迁移决策的影响因素从单一制度门槛向人口多元需求转变。本文从家庭决策的视角构建中国农业转移人口户籍迁移的分析框架，重点关注城乡权益交换对户籍迁移家庭化的影响。基于2017年全国流动人口动态监测调查数据的实证研究发现，农业转移人口户籍迁移的决策主体是家庭，决策目标是家庭利益最大化，决策机制是户籍关联的城市和乡村权益间的权衡。具体地，户籍迁移存在“家庭团聚效应”，即夫妻一方获取城市户口会提升另一方落户城市的主观意愿。农村三权都存在降低户籍迁移意愿的“滞留效应”；同时，更多的农村权益意味着乡—城权益互换的成本提升，如果夫妻一方已经获得城市户口，另一方落户城市带来的权益增长将远低于放弃农村户口的权益损失，导致多数农业转移人口家庭在利益权衡之下选择“城乡分离”的户籍策略以实现城乡权益的总和最大化，最终户籍迁移呈现出逆家庭化的特征。
